Apparently, I have ancestors directly involved with this factory.
In 2002, maybe earlier or later, along with my sister, we stumbled upon a man who was in the throes of locating pipe molds. He told us he was trying to find any pipe molds in and by the creek where they got the clay to use for the pipes. And that these molds were needed to certify the sight for the National Register. I recall he referenced the name of a woman whose last name was Price. And that we found out later from one of our Virginia relatives and that we are kin to her.
Our family names in the area are Goin(s), Martin, Price, and Cambell. My, father, Robert E. Goin(s) was born in Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, in 1930.
During this time, we visited a century old family grave site, a small plot maybe 80 by 40 feet, under the shade of many trees, with moss blanketing the entire ground and an old iron, well-kept fence, maybe two- and one-half feet high surrounding the site.
Walking on the moss and feeling the soft cushion under my feet just accentuated the perception of my family history and the inevitability of death that reaches out to all of us. But not in a negative sense, but more like we are all part of the same journey.

I just found your channel. I have just watched a few of your videos and I love what you are doing. Do you know of any clay pipe factories in New York or New England?

Thank you so much! I'm not sure about NY or New England, but I will reach out to Kelley to see if she has more info. I'll be back in touch soon! -- April Brown, Digital Outreach Coordinator

Hello, Jonathan. Most of the illustrations in this video are from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources website. They have a wonderful slideshow that goes more in depth about the industry and the people that worked there. You can find it here: www.dhr.virginia.gov/SlideShows/Pamplin/pamplinTitleSlide.html. Thank for the question!

A niche market? I might suggest bongs.

Not sure anyone knew what a bong was during this factory's time. LOL. In modern times, yes.
