As a pro musician who has been in the industry for over 25 years I can honestly say I have played with or seen such incredible singers that would smoke most people on these so called talent shows. But they won't enter because they are 1, older, or 2, dont want to denigrate themselves on a glorified talent contest. Its a shame. Its horrible. The industry is F'd.
I was a top 5 contestant on The Voice and Linda is 100% right. It's a very hollow form of success. I was 21 years old at the time and I went on the show because I wanted to be famous. I wanted adulation and recognition (that I hadn't earned) And it amounted to nothing but a few months of good paying gigs. I erroneously thought that people watched those shows looking for new artists to follow their eventual creative output but I was wrong. They watch because they like that tv show, and nothing more. Now I make my music and put it out which is enough for me, but I have released 10 albums since then and all of the people who "voted for me" don't support it in any way. My original music is completely over-shadowed by the 10 karaoke songs I recorded for The Voice. What Linda Perry is saying is a tough pill to swallow, and it's the reality. I love her.
I have to agree. Most of the American Idol, and The Voice contestants sound like generic run around town singers. Not saying they're bad, but I've never heard one that made me say WOW! And she's right, they're not artists, they're people who sing, and singing...someone else's song no less, isn't going to get you a mansion in Malibu with a shelf full of Grammy's. There's tons and tons of people who can sing.....but not everyone can be an artist.
I can tell you that if you go to any karaoke bar in the Philippines, on any given night there will be 5-6 potential American idol winners there. Good singers are a dime a dozen.

i believe she is true, i've hit the grind for years, maybe a little over 20 years now. and over twenty years ago i had that dream of a gold record. I was young, i could and still play music. Now these days the songs i write and play for people has the best meaning to me then the songs people who all a sudden made the idol can ever write. The years, the bands, man, it has been such a deadly experience for me. Anyway's, I believe in the experience, the true experience when it come's to trying to make it in the biz, the songs i wrote and performed for people and loved ones..., man. its so easy though still hard to explain. the thing is i will write and perform on my own terms. its easier for me to remember lyrics when i can remember that time and place in my life. From Canada, with a cold beer in my hand, watching a hockey game on CBC and not to mention a guitar beside me.

There are probably 500k or more people in this country that can sing at least as well as and probably better than most of what we see on those shows, who never get their break for a lot of different reasons. A lot of people on The Voice and Idol are there because of their story (that's what sells advertising), not their talent.

For all those who feel the music inside, go out there, let it out, try all avenues, karaoke bars, restaurants, video yourself, go out express yourself. All these contestants come and go,and after 3 or 4 seasons,you don't even remember who was the fourth place couple seasons ago...and the one that won that season,put out popcorn records and become popular for a year,next year,the next winner takes the one year ride,and the cycle repeats...all it's left at the end are these "singers" barely surviving in the tough waves of the music ocean. Unless you are Aretha Franklin,Marvin Gaye or Stevie Wonder who can at least write your own songs let alone become timeless hits,all of these shows are just too cruel to young people.
In addition to Kelly Clarkson- you have Fantasia who is big in R&B, Crrie Underwood who is one of the biggest Country stars and sold millions of records, there's Daughtry & Jordin Sparks who has had both Pop & film success and was cosigned by Whitney fucking Houston. The rest....I dunno. They're great, but I dunno if they would have ever been discovered without the show. Also, there's Jennifer Hudson. She didn't win, but her career skyrocketed in music and film. Moreso film than music, but she's still incredible. The Voice's has two main problems- they don't prepare the artists properly after the show. American Idol at least give the winners a big push after the show, where as most of the Voice contestants aren't promoted outside of The Voice. The Voice got better, though...pushing Danielle Bradbury hard in the Country route. But Cassadee Pope was mismanaged, IMO. She had a #1 country album, but was previously known before the show as a Pop Rock musician. The Voice's other problem is that, while they're wildly successful and have more views & higher ratings than American Idol, they have TOO MANY SEASONS PER YEAR. One season a year would be enough for them to prepare the artists better, and fans won't watch it just because you have superstar coaches. In other words, the show is almost to popular. It should only premiere once a year, not twice.
honestly though, it watered down the music industry and makes artists so disposeable, and those who are really a hit will stick with whoever fans really like their "story" and what they're about. the sad thing is that music is made a product, and is abused as a product which where the music is so disposed of and trashed, theres no authenticitym theres no local groups people can enjoy because huge labels can spend the money for that famous person to go all over america which is one of the hardest countries to tour in because its soooo expensive. SO, american idol and all these shows basically take out smaller time artists and blow em out of the water with their big cash background and ability to market their "product." theres a lack of authenticity and appreciation for musicians and the music today.. its sad and i hope it changes.

Marvin Rashad sure, she exaggerated a bit i think for a reaction, thats what you do to get people's attention. But seeing how American Idol makes music a disposeable product, where even now itunes and digital recording makes music so easy to make and theres hardly any time or dedication required compared to analog/ tape studios, where now, the lack of effort into the music an the artist makes it that much more less of a down fall if that artist didn't become successful, and the american Idol fame is fleeting and so mainstream down the toilet that, the way the music industry is, has left the consumers to wait for the enxt big thing as a fad likee fashion. wherethe next big thing is over after a week or a couple months. however good the person and however much money the person has and companies are willing to invest in that artist because of the millions they could make for corporations and advertising. its so watered down and has no heart anymore. Its SAD, atleast see that, and that there is something that we need to do to make fans expect more and better of the music world so we can have greater and more lasting expectations for music appreciation and to boost the ante and standard that an artist needs to be to go through being skillful, and disciplined as a well made artist of entertainment. By their own terms and not a product. Running them through the mill just creates plastic people with no authenticity. Its not all bad for sure, but theres a corner everyone is driven in where only a few styles of music are out there compared to the millions where theres so much more to music and the music world that isnt even being recognized.

I can agree and disagree with her on this. She's right about them never being discovered. She is also right about some not being artist. On the other hand those competitions are like filling out an application for a job. Sometimes you have absolutely no experience in the field you are applying for. If you are lucky enough to get hired, you have someone to guide along the way, until you learn the business. It's the same exact way in the entertainment business. The music industry has always been about singer-songwriters and pre-packaged (performers). The Monkeys were performers. Frank Farian did Boney M and Milli Vanilli and only one woman in Boney M could sing. The songs were written by Frank Farian and apparently sung by him as well. The music industry has always been loaded with good looking performers who couldn't write a song and sometimes couldn't sing either. All they knew how to do was look good, dance and lip-synch.
Used to be that musicians had to master their craft & pay their dues. Now all you have to do is go on Idol, Voice, etc. & look good while real musicians write your hits for your auro-tuned voice. Sad.

The sooner the public realize they are being sold an old and laughable format by businessmen with no imagination, the better.
Absolutely right. All these contestants come and go,and after 3 or 4 seasons,you don't even remember who was the fourth place couple seasons ago...and the one that won that season,put out popcorn records and become popular for a year,next year,the next winner takes the one year ride,and the cycle repeats...all it's left at the end are these "singers" barely surviving in the tough waves of the music ocean. Unless you are Aretha Franklin,Marvin Gaye or Stevie Wonder who can at least write your own songs let alone become timeless hits,all of these shows are just too cruel to young people.

In addition to Kelly Clarkson- you have Fantasia who is big in R&B, Crrie Underwood who is one of the biggest Country stars and sold millions of records, there's Daughtry & Jordin Sparks who has had both Pop & film success and was cosigned by Whitney fucking Houston. The rest....I dunno. They're great, but I dunno if they would have ever been discovered without the show. Also, there's Jennifer Hudson. She didn't win, but her career skyrocketed in music and film. Moreso film than music, but she's still incredible.
The Voice's has two main problems- they don't prepare the artists properly after the show. American Idol at least give the winners a big push after the show, where as most of the Voice contestants aren't promoted outside of The Voice. The Voice got better, though...pushing Danielle Bradbury hard in the Country route. But Cassadee Pope was mismanaged, IMO. She had a #1 country album, but was previously known before the show as a Pop Rock musician.
The Voice's other problem is that, while they're wildly successful and have more views & higher ratings than American Idol, they have TOO MANY SEASONS PER YEAR. One season a year would be enough for them to prepare the artists better, and fans won't watch it just because you have superstar coaches. In other words, the show is almost to popular. It should only premiere once a year, not twice.
honestly though, it watered down the music industry and makes artists so disposeable, and those who are really a hit will stick with whoever fans really like their "story" and what they're about. the sad thing is that music is made a product, and is abused as a product which where the music is so disposed of and trashed, theres no authenticitym theres no local groups people can enjoy because huge labels can spend the money for that famous person to go all over america which is one of the hardest countries to tour in because its soooo expensive. SO, american idol and all these shows basically take out smaller time artists and blow em out of the water with their big cash background and ability to market their "product." theres a lack of authenticity and appreciation for musicians and the music today.. its sad and i hope it changes.
I disagree...especially with the additions of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Fantasia & Jennifer Hudson. All are reputable artists who bring a lot to the music industry in Pop, Country and R&B.
Marvin Rashad sure, she exaggerated a bit i think for a reaction, thats what you do to get people's attention. But seeing how American Idol makes music a disposeable product, where even now itunes and digital recording makes music so easy to make and theres hardly any time or dedication required compared to analog/ tape studios, where now, the lack of effort into the music an the artist makes it that much more less of a down fall if that artist didn't become successful, and the american Idol fame is fleeting and so mainstream down the toilet that, the way the music industry is, has left the consumers to wait for the enxt big thing as a fad likee fashion. wherethe next big thing is over after a week or a couple months. however good the person and however much money the person has and companies are willing to invest in that artist because of the millions they could make for corporations and advertising. its so watered down and has no heart anymore. Its SAD, atleast see that, and that there is something that we need to do to make fans expect more and better of the music world so we can have greater and more lasting expectations for music appreciation and to boost the ante and standard that an artist needs to be to go through being skillful, and disciplined as a well made artist of entertainment. By their own terms and not a product. Running them through the mill just creates plastic people with no authenticity. Its not all bad for sure, but theres a corner everyone is driven in where only a few styles of music are out there compared to the millions where theres so much more to music and the music world that isnt even being recognized.

i dont agree with some things in her life, but i do believe that she is the real deal when it comes to music, i do believe she is a real artist, and i agree with her about shows like american idol, and she is not the only real artist out there who hold those same views. Warren Haynes of Govt mule, and the allmen brothers hold the same views as her...He thinks those shows are a joke, all they do is make NON TALENT jerks like simon cowell are what ever his name is, all it does is make him rich.

I can agree and disagree with her on this. She's right about them never being discovered. She is also right about some not being artist. On the other hand those competitions are like filling out an application for a job. Sometimes you have absolutely no experience in the field you are applying for. If you are lucky enough to get hired, you have someone to guide along the way, until you learn the business. It's the same exact way in the entertainment business. Sometimes it works out and other times it doesn't.

The music industry has always been about singer-songwriters and pre-packaged (performers). The Monkeys were performers. Frank Farian did Boney M and Milli Vanilli and only one woman in Boney M could sing. The songs were written by Frank Farian and apparently sung by him as well. The music industry has always been loaded with good looking performers who couldn't write a song and sometimes couldn't sing either. All they knew how to do was look good, dance and lip-synch.

Used to be that musicians had to master their craft & pay their dues. Now all you have to do is go on Idol, Voice, etc. & look good while real musicians write your hits for your auro-tuned voice. Sad.
