The whole special ops commynity is facing shortages, but if i remember correctly any E-4 and above can apply it doesnt matter your MOS but thier are minimum requirements you must meet. Its kind of a revolving door MOS within the SPECOPS community. You must be NCO before you can join.

they're not Special operations btw. Recon and Force Recon are under the MAGTF and not SOCOM. Therefore, since they're capable of taking on SOCOM missions, they are dubbed as Special Operations Capable.
They are special forces, just not in socom their the Marines Spec ops unit, arguably I would rather be in recon than Marsoc cause The Marine Corps has control of Recon unlike Marsoc which is controlled like Seals by Socom
Recon is not considered special forces, yes they do alot of the jobs but they do not have to play by jsoc rules. The marsoc units were built by pulling marines from recon units back in 06. Marsoc is it's own thing to itself recon badass as hell yes but they dont have to play in the sf community like marsoc, seals, delta and berets etc does.
I mean, Det-One/ MARSOC pulled from Recon because the unit needed to be stood up like yesterday and they needed bodies like yesterday. Recon was the single source of Marines that had the closest skill set and were the most well trained Marines to cover down on those new requirements that Marine Corps could ever possible have to choose from. However, Recon is essential to keeping grunts safe. As we all know, the Marines are an infantry centric unit, and since recon provides vital information to the GCE or MEF Commander on how to best use his resources (grunts), I don’t think they will go away. Everyone is capable of some kind of recon, to include LAR...but actual Recon knows what to look for and how to be sneaky about it, not to mention their specialized insertion methods. Grunts cant really focus on just Recon, as their job is to kill. MARSOC provides not only Recon, but Amphibious Direct Action and FID (among some other things) to SOCOM. They may be facing an identity crisis, but I digress. Recon has many skill sets that commanders can employ, and while they may not be as direct action focused as, say, Rangers, they still train in DA as their secondary role, and can be used in such a manner that is reasonably better than your average grunt. In a pinch, Recon and even more so Force Recon are huge tools in a Marine Commander’s back pocket, especially if all the MARSOC Marines are somehow busy with SOCOM duties.

Anthevious yeah man don’t go for a recon contract, try and get infantry or another job and then try out after bootcamp cause if you don’t make it with a recon contract then you’ll be put in an open contract and get placed somewhere you don’t wanna be
I was at Onna Point (Okinawa 1969?) and was sent from there to Vietnam. The Division had reconnaissance responsibility for all of Quang Tri Province except the Khe Sanh Tactical Area of Operations (TAOR). 3rd FORECON patrolled the area north of Highway 9 to the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), while my recon company (from 3rd Recon Battalion) was targeted south of Highway 9 to the Thừa Thiên provincial border. I got my PH on one of those patrols. Some M888F*** gook got me in my wrist. Good for a 4-day trip to "paradise".
I tried enlisting in the Marines since my junior year of high school and it didn't go well, they bullshit me so hard and we're reluctant on at least making an effort to try and enlist me. I got a solid score on the ASVAB, I showed up to PT and got everything my recruiters asked of me and they still didn't take me. I talked to the Army and I've gotten further with them in one week than I ever did with the Marine Corps.

Jumping with nods on during the daytime is practice for nighttime. The nods change your flying position in freefall. Also, upon deploying the parachute, we're able to see other jumpers, obstacles, threats and identify safe landing areas. Plus that's one less piece of gear to pack into the already heavy ruck.

I was Marine 2nd Recon (LeJuene) in mid 80s and did very well (Charlie Company), after two years of Marine Infantry at Pendelton and Okinawa. My RIP (recconnasaince indoctrination program) school was extremely tough however, much worse than boot camp. I beleive i drowned 2-3 times in the water but my instructors knew exactly how to pump that water out and get my lungs functional again. On land I was the fastest runner and they taught me to relax in the water and they succeeded. I passed first attempt. My nephew just passed MARSOC after one year and now he is in Jump School, goes straight to free fall, then dive school. He is E5, has been in the CORP for 4 years. He had to reenlist five years to get to the MARSOC selection process. MARSOC has it's own tactical (RANGER SCHOOL) phase. I trained with UDT in the mid 80s. They did the deep diving and we did the intermediate diving. I have a great respect for SEALS. What I learned over four years is that everyone in the US Military has a significant role. I was never a Recon Marine who called the HQ Pogues. Unfortunately I had to help bury 17 of my best friends who died along the way, Beirut Lebanon 1983. 2nd Recon, Charlie Company, 1982-1984
