“Trust and Obey”. A lyric video for the popular hymn “Trust and Obey”, with piano instrumental accompaniment. “Trust and Obey” was written by John H. Sammis (1846 -1919), a Presbyterian minister. The music was composed by Daniel B. Towner (1850 -1919), a musician and music professor who was one of D. L. Moody’s associates.
In his book “My Life and the Story of the Gospel Hymns” (1906) Ira D. Sankey, who was the main musical associate of D. L. Moody, provides a narrative by Towner describing how the hymn came about.
According to the narrative, Towner had been singing for Moody during one of his series of meetings in Brockton, Massachusetts. During one testimony session, a young man made the statement “I am not quite sure - but I am going to trust, and I am going to obey.”
Towner jotted down the statement and sent it with the story behind it to the Reverend J. H. Sammis. Based on that letter, Sammis wrote the chorus, followed by the verses, of the hymn “Trust and Obey”, to which Towner added the tune.
The hymn was first published in 1887 in the compilation: Hymns New and Old, edited by Towner. Since then it has appeared in many hymn books and has gone on to become one of the best loved hymns among Christian worshippers.
