What a Friend We Have in Jesus was written by Joseph Medlicott Scriven (1819 - 1886) in the mid-1850’s, originally as a poem to comfort his mother after the death of his father. It was first published in 1865. Charles Converse (1832 - 1918) wrote the melody by which the song is best known in 1868, and the first publication of the hymn with this melody was in 1870.
