Size DOES Matter!! | Building a HUGE Media Console

- How to Build a HUGE Media Console with Decorative Metal Panels // Entertainment Center ...In this video I build one of my largest pieces of custom furniture to date...a 9-½ foot media console with decorative metal panel doors. Media cabinet seems to be the more modern and hip term for an entertainment center, but I'm pretty sure they serve the same function. This was a monster piece that I built in several sections to keep it modular for painting and transportation purposes. It took a lot of thinking and head scratching to make it all possible, but I think the end result looks great and luckily it fit together like a giant jigsaw puzzle and not a Rubik's Cube. Let me know what you think!!

Hey Keith , usualy i say nothing about security stuff but , here i had to 🥶 If you want to start your dado at a line , you ABSOLUTELY need to to have the back of the peace ( neer you) be on the table saw and the rest like you said slowly and bingo !! Why this way you say ??? Because of the saw direction , going towards you . If you want to keep your fingers that’s the way to do it 👍🏼👏. I just love to watch your vids , cats and your jokes 😜👍🏼❤️🇨🇦
🚨 That's a very good point. Thank you. Sometimes you get too focused on the camera angle and not the task at hand. 🚨
He has a Sawstop man. Also he’s been doing this for a lonnnnggggg time. I think he knows when something can be done and when it can’t.
@@nathanielsnyder1323 He is right on this one, but I appreciate the support!! 👍🏻👊🏻
Keith, your work is always meticulous and almost as sharp as your wit.
Watching this one in particular got me thinking of pricing and how a piece of painted furniture like this seems deceptively cheap to build/have custom made, but the level of craft involved (and pure cost of materials) merits a pricetag higher than most would expect.
Not to talk inside baseball, but I'd be interested to watch a video or two about how you make a custom woodworking business work financially, given all the factors at play.
Thanks so much! Admittedly, it’s EXTREMELY difficult to make a one-off custom piece like this work financially and foresee all the potential problems that will be encountered. It all looks so straightforward from the initial drawing 😂. Bottom line, some are winners and some are losers, but hopefully lessons learned save you on future builds. I do have a video coming out showing why I don’t build end grain cutting boards because of the insane amount of labor involved.
What a massive and incredible project! I’m amazed at some of the detail you showed, especially around the metal on the inside of the doors. Great work, Keith!
Thank you very much! It definitely tested me every step of the way!
Turned out really beautiful. As others I listened to the podcast first and was excited to see the finished project. Outtakes of your misadventures would have been great but I have a feeling you weren't in the mood for filming. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much! Outtakes of me sweating and swearing during install wouldn't have been very flattering for me 😜😂
Great job Mr. Keith! I admire your level of perfection and your commentary is great.
Thanks Andrew! 👊
That is beautiful! Great joinery and execution. The paint job looks amazing. Nice job Keith and as always great video. Thank you !
Thanks a lot, Matthew! I appreciate the kind words! 🙌
Yes, I most certainly did enjoy watching the process. Thank you very much for posting.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love the longer video! This is beautiful. Thanks for the content. I love hearing the backstory on your builds on the podcast then seeing it on video.
Awesome! Thank you! And thanks for listening to the podcast! 👊
A beautiful piece of furniture! A good finish really makes a huge difference, too.
I totally agree! And thank you!
Really beautiful work, Keith! It looks fantastic! 😃
I didn't understand at first why plywood with MDF vernier, but if it's going to be painted... Makes sense. It's much easier painting vernier than plywood!
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Absolutely! The MDF skin makes for a beautifully smooth surface for painting.
Amazing work, as always, Keith! I loved seeing your pieces come together and it's very inspiring!
Thanks Bill! Super appreciate the support!
Keith, another fantastic woodworking project. Your attention to detail is impeccable. Shout out from Brooklyn. Take care.
Thanks Freddy! I greatly appreciate the comment. Cheers!
Another jewel, what a beautiful piece of furniture. A magnificent piece. And now I follow you on TikTok! Thank you for sharing your "always" excellent work! Greetings from Argentina! Have a great sunday! Stay safe!

Oh to have the bag of tricks that you have in your head! Chamfering bit for the stops in the back of the panels to make it look like a miter. So impressive!

You are truly the master of detail of all YT woodworkers. Quick tip: you 'd better buy a lamello zeta P2 which allows you to use the tenso. No more struggling with clamps as you showed on the mitred edge banding of the table top. A few projects like these and you earned the machine back. Cheers
Thanks! And I have a Zeta but a friend was using it for a much more Important project when I was building this.
I love the random comments. Like as if someone else was throwing random clips at the time he was making commentary. "By later, I guess I mean right now." 😂🤣

I have debated outsourcing my finishing for a few years now. I don’t have the margins, but I image if you know upfront an approximate cost you can build this into the quote. Beautiful job. It was nice to see your solutions to big project in smaller work space. I share this limitation.
-Ben
Thanks Ben! Yes, knowing costs up front are key to outsourcing anything. Finishing seems to be the most cost prohibitive to outsource. Sometimes it's more than what it costs to build the piece.
as usual.. amazing your work Keith!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
I'm not that guy that says how much he "loves the content" but... Here I am saying I really do enjoy watching your videos.
Well, I greatly appreciate your comment and the support. Thanks very much! 🙏🏻👊🏻
Definitely another awesome job Keith and Jerry! 😸 I really liked that metal you used with the doors! 👍🏻 Oh I’m sure that was a rotary phone! 😀 Thanks for sharing!

Hi Keith. I know you don't do many 'shop videos', but your shop has so many rather unique tools/setups... I'd love to see you do a video on your L fence used for cutting end rabbits, how you made your SS zero cl. inserts, table saw jigs(you use so many diff. ones during builds) and even a shop tour. I already copied your use of those Goldblatt rubber float for panels which is SO awesome. Thanks!
Thanks so much for the kind words and the interest in more content. Definitely more shop jig videos on the way, along with a shop tour, so stay tuned!! 👍

Hey Wild Man, Love the video. Please keep them coming. I had a 12’ cabinet to make once and did a similar approach as you did. Just that darn indirect hernia flares up now and then!

Amazing cabinet. Nice job.
Thanks a lot!! 👍🏻
Beautiful....BEAUTIFUL!!! Your videos are always super informative and extremely entertaining. I was surprised to see you using maple. Was that a customer request? Maybe it paints better that other species? Curious. Thanks KJ, stay safe kind sir.
Thank you so much! I prefer maple over poplar because it is much harder and takes paint better in my opinion. It also machines with much crisper edges.
That unit is so big you must have needed longitude and latitude to navigate your way around its construction. Nice one.
Keep 'er lit Bro!

Incredibly talented. Nice work.

God I'm always so impressed with your attention to detail. Your sock drawer must be so organized. What is you system for documenting which door is which before sending out for paint?
😂 my sock drawer IS quite organized. System for doors is using a nail set to put little dents in the bottom of the door to signify which number. So, door 1 gets one mark and door 6 gets 6. Pretty basic but effective. Eventually I’ll buy a steel number stamp set. In fact, I’m going to order some right now…
Hey Keith - I bet you wish you had the Zeta for this build. I enjoyed watching I ran into a lot of similar design problems when I did my office. I don't do TH-cam but I documented it over on the FOG.
Yes! The Lamello would have been clutch on this build and saved a ton of time during install. Luckily, it's in the tool belt now for all future cabinet projects!
I loved!!!

First...to answer your question, it sounds like our childhoods calling us (I'm looking at all you Gen-Xers). Second...AMAZING build! I'm always so inspired by your projects and the fun, lighthearted way you share them.

Looking good as usual, Keith. Where did you get the blue registration attachment for your DF500? I’ve got the black one from Seneca, but am curious about the blue one. Does it work well for you?
Thanks Michael! That is the BigFoot by TSO Products. It's a a great replacement for the flimsy plastic one that comes with the Domino.
Simplesmente incrível

Keith, another great video. Question: if I wanted to make lap joints on 2x6’s to create long boards, what daddo blades would you recommend for a good flat cut (and wouldn’t take forever). I need to create qty 18, 24 ft 2x6’s and would like to lap and glue the joint. Just curious if you had an opinion. Thanks!
There are many good ones out there...Infinity Tools Dadonator, Forrest Dado King or the Freud. All great options.
always enjoy watching you work!!!

Nice project as usual. I think it's time to expand the workshop 🤣
Beau travail Keith

@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking she will agree no doubt 🤣
Nice neat clean looking project, any reason for using hard maple - just because it’s painted did it matter? Shocked at the chipped router bit ! That router bit storage video I watched when you first released it should have kept the bits in good condition 😝. Always look forward to your posts - keep it up 👍
Hard maple is preferred because it is hard...much more durable than Poplar. It is also a very close grained wood, so it takes paint better. And the carbide probably got nicked before the storage upgrade when my bits were just rolling around in my drawer 😬😂
Good 👍👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
I thought the doors were wicker from the thumbnail..metal is much smarter. It's a classic. Nice work.
Coincidentally, the client originally wanted wicker and then changed their mind to the metal 😂

@@ps3shakes123 LOL.
Quick question…any resources (articles, videos, etc.) on the L-fence that you would recommend?
www.finewoodworking.com/project-guides/shop-projects/the-incredible-l-fence
Hi Keith, I am trying to build a TV stand out of 3 30" wall cabinets, with only 2 legs on either end. I see that your initial design (sketch up rendering) had the same design i am trying to achieve. what was your reasoning for attaching the 2 legs under the middle portion of that furniture piece? I will be supporting the under side of the cabinets with .5" to .75" plywood, along with the same size on the top and sides. I will also be needing to support a 75" tv. Hoping to get your input! thank!
This cabinet is extremely heavy and without support in the middle, it will most likely sag at some point. The smallest bit of sag on this piece will also throw off all the door reveals.
Newer woodworker here, is that L fence another type of auxiliary/sacrificial fence? Haven’t seen that before. Thanks!
Auxiliary, yes. It’s not sacrificial because it doesn’t get damaged, so it’s infinitely useable.
Really well done, Keith. I enjoyed hearing about the design challenges and material choice on this build.
Help me out here; are my eyes are deceiving me, or is the HDF plywood that you used thicker than ¾ inch? The darker MDF face sandwiching the lighter veneer wood core is giving off some sort of optical illusion. In one frame I’m sure it is ¾-inch, the next frame it appears 1-inch thick. So, what was the thickness of that HDF ply?
Thanks Andreas!! HDF is only 3/4", so must be an optical illusion. 👍
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Much appreciated, good sir!
Keith....awesome build...... Do you like your Sonos Sub? Was it worth the price in your opinion? thanks!
Thanks man! Sonos sub? I was at a client’s home.
Dude - some many thoughts about this video! First, overall design isn't my cup of tea - but thats fine, doesn't need to be. Second, the different techniques you used throughout were so clutch, several different ideas that I wouldn't have thought of (shaker construction for one!). Then third, throughout the whole video your audio just killed me. Its like, you don't appear to be pursuing humor specifically...you just had like 6 cups of coffee right before the voice over XD and just ran with it hahah. All around enjoyable video, well done haha
Ha! Thanks Donny. And the voice over is always a whole other job in itself, so you gotta be caffeinated, record off the cuff and bring the energy so people don't fall asleep right away. Glad to hear you were able to stay awake 😜😂
Another great build. I so enjoy your work and your great commentary style. How did you handle the seam (not showing) on the plywood top since you couldn’t use a 9 foot sheet?
The material used had an thin MDF face, so it's as stable as you can get. It was sanded flushed and primed and painted. Nothing more I can do to keep it seamless.
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking I’m sure it was a gorgeous as the rest of the piece. Thanks for the inspiration.
Gorgeous piece. I’m curious about the levelers and why you didn’t insert them into the bottom of the feet? Is it just your preference in style? I’m 50/50 and really just curious.
I've done it both ways. Clients pay a certain price point and this wasn't worth the extra labor.
Great video . Thanks . Need a continuous wrap around floating shelf for hallway flush above door trim video .

How do you fit cabinet doors when you have an over hang on the face frame? I've got some built ins that have 3/4" lip on the faceframe for each bottom cabinet and I'm needing to fit doors to them after they've been built.
If you are using hinges like I did, you glue Spacer blocks to bring out flush with the face frame.
A Beautyful wood piece.

I'm in Jersey too!!! Great build. I typically finish myself, but I'm curious about outsourcing. I'm sure it's worth it, but how much do you spend for finishing on a project of this size?
I don't remember the exact cost of the finishing on this one, but it was at least $2K. Price varies on many things. They had zero prep work to do when I dropped it off because I had everything perfectly sanded and prepped and they able to wheel it right in the spray booth.
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking of course. I'm sitting in the garage painting as we speak so it sounds very appealing to never paint again!!

Hi Keith, I always come back to this build because it's so nice and a good reference for something similar I'm building. On the legs, why does a set have a stop cut, while the other two have a plunge cut? I'm not understanding the difference between the two, and why it's necessary?
The grooves weren't perfectly centered, so to maintain the same position on the opposing posts I did plunge cuts, so I didn't' have to move the fence.
Ohh that makes much more sense now with the grooves being off-center, thanks Keith!
