  • The Honda Odyssey is the pine box that houses the corpse of The Single Life. Its a Daycare-DeLorean that can't go back in time and spread Amazing Goop on that broken condom.

My parents drove an 04 odyssey for years. It lasted a full 16 years, until it eventually, finally, crapped out. My dad loved that van, he babied the thing, washing it at least twice a month. When my parents went to trade it in its dying days , the thing had a check engine light on and was struggling to make it to 40. When they got to the dealer for an evaluation, the light miraculously went off, increasing the value tenfold. My dad says it was one last act of kindness from the van. He cherished that van, dailying it when his Ford freestyle went bad. My family has had 2 more odysseys, an 07 and our current one, a 2011. But neither of them hold a candle to that ever faithful 2004.

My parents also had a 2004 for 16 years it had over 200k when they got rid of it my mom babied it the extremely reliable only had a couple things break like the starter motor mounts and an o2 sensor I remember the power sliding doors would get stuck sometimes and one of the exterior handles broke both front window regulators though it had a problem of stalling but it only happened like 3 times it never crapped out it burned a little bit of oil but all Hondas do when they get high mileage transmission was a little rough but not major never had check engine light except for o2 sensor my mom jus wanted something newer and didn’t want a minivan anymore

Lol, say what you will, but I still think Honda Odysseys are awesome. They have so many buttons! It's an adventure just finding them all and pressing them to see what they do. Plus you can fit so many people inside, and I mean actually fit too, not cram them in like you do in most crossovers. Plus they have big ass doors that open and close with the press of a button! That's some fucking Star Trek shit right there.
Plus they're so uncool, they're kind of cool. Three row crossovers just scream "I'm a boring mom trying desperately to look cool". A Honda Odyssey says "Fuck it, I don't need your rules. Plus my car has a vacuum cleaner. Where's your fucking vacuum?!".

Living the domestic life can and does deserve a good joke. However its becomes more of a cliche when people complain about a man's family life. In fact its a worn out Hollywood trope. Its hard to figure what the solution is for people dragging this tired out plot point. Do you leave your family? Are you doomed forever? Is there a different way to live the domestic life?
In this case the mini van becomes the focal point. Is it the vans fault? If a different car is bought does that change everything? Well no. The man that bought the Explorer or Suburban has the same amount childhood trash in the back seats. He still laments about his youth while driving to to baseball practice. The man who fears the passing of time and the inevitable missed opportunities of his younger self dwells in a condition independent of a wife and kids. A single man may look at himself and realize that he is the source of this frustration or he might pass the blame onto to outside sources (the ever vague "They"). A family man can pass it on to his family and the mini-van is the megaphone telling the world "boo hoo poor me".
Why? Because its not a "cool" car. The same man that prides himself on manly simplicity and practicality. The same man that bemoan his wife's need to have things match, brand loyalty, purchases based on esthetics alone (Iphone, Ipad, MacBook, all in rose gold). The same man that scoffs at the younger generation, rags on "Millennials" for their misuse of testosterone and avocado toast. This guy is afraid that a car's looks might make people think less of him. Living everyday resentful of his family and the world while ignorant of the hypocrite he has become.

    • @magichippo44
      @magichippo44 10 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Not really, Yoshi was. Toad was slower than Yoshi probably because he was too light to put all the power of the cart to the ground. People thought him being the lightest character equaled fastest but he just wasn't. Yoshi was perfectly balanced, able to put all those 150cc to the ground, and great in corners. Yoshi is the Miata of Mario Kart.

I mean if you think about it... we've had sport versions of the wagon, trucks, SUVs, sedans, and economy cars. Vans are kind of untouched, though. You'd think the companies would throw in a option as a nod to that dad who traded in his Trans Am WS6 to appease the wife.

It needs that power to get up to speed at all. It's a gigantic brick of shitty steel that weighs about as much as a large boat.
Honda S2000 has a 4-Banger that puts out 230+ HP, which is quite amazing. That being a fast, lightweight, sports car makes it extremely good. I don't like Honda at all but I do have to give them credit for extracting that power from a 4 cylinder. It'll probably blow some gaskets after a little while maybe before it rusts through though.

Violetta What are you guys talking about, definitely a heavy car but you guys are exaggerating. This thing has a power to weight ratio same as the most powerfull Accord. I just don't think that soccer moms need all that power, they should just put a 2 liter diesels in minivans like in Europe.

    I hate Honda Odyssey.
I kissed one asian mid aged lady's 2004 Odyssey rear bumper, no scratch, 2mm x 6mm bulge, and she wanted me to pay $2000 for a new bumper. She pulls out her LV purse out of her LV bag and take my auto insurance paper.
I am unemployed just graduated, only $3000 in bank, she has 3 cars, a house worth $164,000.
I can hardly imagine Nissan Altima's bumper is stronger than Honda's. I do not recommend this snob vehicle.

His statements about the power train are so horribly wrong in the context of the van in the video. The Odyssey only had a 4 cylinder option for the first generation, when it was effectively a slightly taller accord wagon (and didn't even have sliding doors). For the second generation it had the 3.5 liter exclusively, with a 4 speed auto from 99-01 and a 5 speed auto from 02-04.

Had one transmission replacement in its life at 175k. Interior looks like a freaking brand new car, its kind of scary how minty fresh the interior is, exterior is decent, not a spec of rust, clear coat isn't coming off it. It was one owner, stack of service receipts, always serviced at the Honda dealer.
We nicknamed it the "MAN VAN", and IMO a minivan is a major way to show off how big your testicles are. I mean you have 2, 3, 4 of your offspring riding around in the back, nothing shows that you are more of a man than being fertile and a great dad IMO.

As a minivan even with the trademark transmission reliability problems, Honda Odyssey’s and Toyota Sienna’s are still battling it out for best minivan. If you look across the board, if it’s not transmission issues, it’s catastrophic engine failure in other brands. There’s just no winning when you don’t pull out. 😔

I don't understand why people don't just go on Craigslist and get a Dodge Grand Caravan for $1,000. Oh wait, nevermind, tons of people do that. Look at it this way, instead of spending $30,000 on a Honda Odyssey that will eventually fail and/or burst into flames, spend the $1,000 on a Dodge Grand Caravan. Why? Because the first thing you do with one is spend another $1,000 on a headunit, new speakers, amp and several subwoofers that you don't need but of course you're going to get because you just got this incredible car for an incredible price and god damnit if you're not going to enjoy it. And, of course, buying a car with 200,000+ miles on it, when you drive it home you notice the transmission is stuck in second gear. Drop another $3,000 and have the transmission rebuilt. That transmission will at least take you to 400,000 miles before you get any problems out of it, change the fluid every 70,000 miles and it'll take you to 500,000 miles.
Now you're $5,000 in, and still have $25,000 dollars left over that you were going to spend on a Honda Odyssey but instead got a much better car. Let's take another $1,000 out for miscellaneous problems that need repair. $24,000 left. Ok.
So your car's reliable, it sounds good, what else can you do? Paint it, of course! Painting your car will achieve maximum enjoyment levels and also maximum baller levels. Hell yeah. so you go to Walmart and grab as much black and red spraypaint as you can hold in your hands, then realize you need painter's tape and some newspapers so you grab some of those. Then you waddle up to the checkout with your arms full of paint and tape. As you lay your items down on the conveyor belt you glance over to see 50 cent condoms. You grab a handful to put into your glove box so when you have passengers in your car they'll think you get tons of pussy.
When you set out to paint your white, '97 Grand Caravan you try your best to cover everything up with newspaper and tape but inevitably end up spraying some black paint on your windows and brake lights. Oh well, a little overspray never hurt anybody. You finish with the black, now time for the red. The tape is put into stripes over your hood and roof, 2 stripes sounds good. Overspray strikes again as you now have 2 red stripes with little red speckles an inch apart on either side of the stripes. Oh well. It's still baller. You spray the remainder of your red paint behind your license plate and let it drip down, European style.
As you're driving your black and red '97 Grand Caravan down the I-95 to meet up at a car audio show so you can show off your mad sound system and your baller van, some asshole in front of you slams on his brakes. You slam your brakes as hard as you can to avoid collision and somebody rear-ends you. You get pushed into the car in front you who was still on his brakes. Your baller-mobile is totaled. They couldn't see your brake lights because of all that black paint.
-And that, my friends, is why you don't buy a Grand Caravan on Craigslist.

I loved my 2001 Odyssey. When I replaced the transmission I added the oil cooler and a tow hitch, put a Yakima box on the roof, and pulled out the middle seats. With the rear row up it was a portable room. With them down it was perfect for an air mattress and I could haul 4x8 sheets of plywood or drywall. Upgraded the stereo, had a scanner and CB, and a tablet permanently attached over the old nav screen. Spent tons of time in that van. I miss it.

My dad bought this a week before my birth back in 2001. (I was planned btw). It grew up with me. It was cozy on a stormy night on the way back/to a party. It shuttled me to and from school. It was a old friend. Admittedly, for the first time in it's existence, ours blew it's transmission (totally unexpected right?) It was already on the way out, as my mom had gotten tired of driving it around as had my father, and we were already going to replace it or set it aside for a 2016 Honda Pilot. Not to mention the sliding door was no longer functioning as well so you kinda had to pull it along to close the door. To put in a 4 grand transmission (not including mechanics bills for the actual replacement) in a car we were pretty much giving away for free because hail damage to the roof had rendered it worthless to our insurance company was the definition of insanity. My father gave the car away to a charity radio show that repaired the transmission and sent it to someone who needed more than we did. It still is terrible car, but it kinda grew on me, and it made me very sad to see it go like that. Just a personal story from a younger car lover.

My family and I had an 01 Odyssey EX in that same duct tape silver (the Honda name is "Granite Green" which is HORSESHIT!) color from 2001 until 2017. Mom drove her first, then eventually it kinda became my car (technically still registered to Dad, but I was the primary driver). Drove her to high school (had my first true makeout sesh in it), then drove her to college in Wisconsin and home every weekend, then eventually drove her to Harper the SECOND time I went there. Sadly she finally died in the early spring of 2017, and I miss her to this day. Rest in Peace Bessie. We all loved you.

My wife drives a 1st gen Odyssey. I actually like it because it is smaller and lighter than the newer Odyssey, and it drives like a car because it is based on the Accord platform. It was also made in Japan.

I have fond memories of this minivan. My step mom had one and she would haul me and my three older step-siblings around. She also started a cleaning business during the 2008 recession and her old Odyssey got her and the business off the ground! Miss that old van.

Don't make fun of it...the Odyssey was, is, and always will be a very capable, fun to drive fan.

I've seen a parts car lot use one as their truck. Made perfect sense to haul a motor across a gravel lot in oregon where it rains half the year, had no rear doors any more and was pretty close to joining the cars it had been ferrying parts from.

If you want to see a review about the social stigma of minivans this is the right place, if you want to know anything about the odyssey go somewhere else.
