You gotta realize that the war wasn't just in Vietnam. The war was at home, too. Unrest, riots, bombings, demonstrations that turned bad, racism, fighting back against racism, and then there was the rise of serial killers and the media paranoia that exploded around that. It was an INSANE time to be living in - the world really did seem about to end. (The thousands of atomic bombs didn't help anybody's state of mind, either.) In some ways it was worse (in some ways a LOT worse) than the world now. And the unrest wasn't just here. There was craziness in Europe, in Japan, all over the world. It seemed that what we call civilization had reached a tearing point, and was ripping itself open, bleeding and screaming. A hell of a time to grow up, lemme tell you!
That time seems calm compared to the chaos now, with "journalists" describing cities destroyed and burning as "peaceful protests" and the US poking sticks into the eyes of nuclear armed powers and blowing up the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, etc. We are on the brink of disaster now.
And don’t forget the day that the National Guard killed four unarmed students during a Vietnam War protest at Kent State University in Ohio. The Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young song called “Ohio” is all about that fateful day back on May 4, 1970.
You're right about being young in Vietnam - I was 18. And the kids think they got it hard now. War is always coming for the young and poor in this world. And believe it - IT'S JUST A SHOT AWAY these days.
The woman shouting out 'rape, murder ' recorded her vocals in the middle of the night while she was pregnant. There is a documentary about background singers like her.
I am not such a big Stones fan - but I got to confess that some of their older stuff is great. This one for example Maybe you would like "Paint it black" or "Angie" as well
The Rolling Stones are truly an icon in rock music. People will suggest a lot of "hits", but even then they have so many hits, and most of their other songs are just as much bangers! I highly recommend "She's A Rainbow", and "Just My Imagination".
Shon, this is my favorite Stones' song. We get nostalgic about the 1960s, especially with the great music, but living through the Vietnam War was reaally heavy. Those of us who didn't have to go over to Southeast Asia to fight a jungle War had "shadow battles" -- major division and unrest here in the U.S. I know families that broke up over the war, for instance. This song captures a moment in history. Even though the Stones were British, the U.S. war in Vietnam impacted a generation in other countries as well as at home.
ITS JUST A SHOT AWAY❗ Most powerful line in the sing. Merry Clayton's vocals are renown in this song. Plus the VOICE CRACK part was so soulful. Great song🎵🎵🎵🔥🔥🔥
Not a huge stones fan but this is still the best rock n roll song ever. Heard it a gazillion times but still never get tired of hearing it. Stones were not about hippie beauty, peace, and love, more about anger, strife, and destruction...which was all happening simultaneously
“Monkey Man” from the same album is a great track. “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” is about a year older. They still play it at the end of every show. “Satisfaction” is their most famous riff, song, …
Love how you look into the lyrical history of the music you react to. My husband was part of the last men to draft for Viet Nam. Music was very political back in the day. Thanks for this one❤
This is my favourite Stones track. I used to sing it in one of my old bands back in the `70s. If you want a band that are badly underrated, but are truly great, try Little Feat. Dixie Chicken would be a great track to start with.
Yes, Little Feat. But, start with Waiting for Columbus Live- track 1 and 2: it’s the introduction, then Join the Band (very short little song) leading to Fat Man in the Bathtub, then do the songs in order- phenomenal concert
i'm an old lady and this is the music of my youth so it is wonderful to see your hearing this for the first time. It brings it all back and the song is relevant even today
Of course after you've heard the song 10,000 times, it loses its' power. But when it came out, this was an instant absolute classic. One of RnR's best, no doubt.
It’s not about children. It’s like someone’s addressing an audience, when someone refers to audience as children. Like ‘hey, kids’. “War, children, it’s just a shot away”
I really enjoyed the video. I was so impressed seeing you reaching back for a song like this that is the definition of a classic. Great comments, great energy. I'm old enough that I grew up with this and am almost embarrassed to say I probably haven't listened, y'know really listened to it for forty years. You brought back a lot of memories and made me think. Great job and thanks.
In the short time I've been subscribed to your channel I've seen a lot of growth - in your knowledge and insight, and even in the way you carry yourself. Carry on!
There is a DVD of al live show in which tgey do this song that will blow your mind. Mary Clayton come out with a flowing kaftan and struts down the runway with Mick, and she lifts her arms and twirls, looking like an angle sent by God to stop the madness.
The face that Mick and The rest of the band needed a voice like Mary’s and she showed up at 2:00 am to put her vocals Down made this song. Is shows that the Stones were true musicians
Check out 'Under My Thumb' also by the Stones. It's crazy and has a trippy little guitar riff that will stick in your head. It is also one of the best songs that uses a xylophone of all things.
Great reaction to a great band, you must hear "She's a Rainbow", "Ruby Tuesday", "Paint it Black", "Beast of Burden", "The Last Time", so many more, all their albums are on YT.
The best thing about music from 60s, 70s is they had actual bands who played actual instruments and actually sang with real voices ‼️‼️💯 Now it is all digitized, synthesized and auto tuned to death 😠😡😠
I find more kindness sometimes in dogs and other animal species to one another than in many people who want to create more misery, pain and suffering for others...God help us please!
Happy New Year Shon!! This is such an amazing song! I grew up listening to these tunes in the late 60's and 70's and used to sing them as a young girl. I still love this song just as much as I did when I first heard it. Peace and love only
Vietnamese women and kids had guns. They had Been fighting the North Vietnamese for 20 years before we got in the war. My buddies were in Nam. We should not have been there at all.
Loved your reaction, it’s a fantastic song. All the Stones recommendations below are good but I would love to see you react to Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo Heartbreaker, it’s not as well known but I think you would like it. Gimme Shelter is considered to be about Vietnam, and it was immensely popular during the war, however the origin of the song is not about war. Apparently, it started it out about rage and jealousy, when Keith Richards convinced himself that his actress girlfriend was having an affair with her leading man, while watching people run for cover during a rainstorm. Remember the Stones are an English band but it was immediately associated with Vietnam and remains so, it’s been used in a bunch of war movies. FYI the leading man was the lead singer of the Stones, Mick Jagger. I enjoyed your enthusiasm and subscribed, looking forward to your next reaction to the Stones.
One thing the soldiers dealt with you could not tell who was the allies or who was the enemy and many times who were the combatants and non combatants. I was just a couple of years too young for this war but had many friends who were over there, some on the ground in the jungles and one who was a door gunner on a chopper. I saw many come back and developed drinking problems and very few would often talk about their experience over there but some have told me about their experiences. I had one friend died decades later that actually was killed over there from agent orange exposure but as many say it was Nam that got him killed. But it was hell for a lot of young men who were not old enough to buy a beer but were old enough to bleed and die for this country. Pull up some play list using Vietnam war songs and you will see many rock band wrote music relating to that war. Sad but some of the best rock music from the 60's was inspired because of it.
Great insight. Kids sent to war that didn't want to be there, but served their country. They should have been commended not spit on! Sad😔. There were so many POW'S that probably have never come home or found! It was called the Vietnam Conflict. All those lives over money! Good one ! Have a happy, healthy, New Year 🎉🥳✌️
Merry Clayton was 8 months pregnant singing background vocals and did it all in one take because she had to pee. She didn’t want to waste production time
I think many people think this song is about Vietnam because Mick Jagger mentioned that war during an interview about the song. Note that there is no mention of Vietnam or even ANYTHING military in the lyrics. To me, the song is about a country torn apart by social unrest, in which society could be either plunged into chaos or nudged towards reconciliation by a single action.
ROLLING STONES, This was in the hay day. Of the Stones 60's into the 70's... More, " CAN'T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT", "CAN YOU HEAR ME KNOCKING", "SATISFACTION", "MOTHER'S LITTLE HELPER".. "
whenever I listen to this classic and hear how Merry Clayton pushed the song right to church with those screams of hers I wonder whom else they might have gotten to sing her parts. Maybe Tina Turner? Diana Ross? Patti Labelle?
2 songs in and you've now heard my favorite 2 Stones tunes. Not many bands that can match the incredible groove's that these guys come up with. More fire? Then check out 'Monkey Man' or 'Street Fighting Man' next or if you want something slower; I suggest 'Angie' or 'Wild Horses'. Cheers.
Merry still alive what the hell are you talking about?🤡🤡 75 goddamn years old Only sad part about MC she lost her legs in a horrible car accident and she's in a wheelchair paralyzed the rest of her life Why don't you check your facts before you put up your nonsense?
You have to love that music during this time period took on the power. I love seeing that in any time period. But this was just a SHOT across the bow of the political establishment, putting into plain words what was happening on the streets of the US and the towns across Vietnam. This was no calculated effort to top the charts, it was a message of solidarity.
Merry Clayton’s vocals on this track are incredible. She deserves all the roses while she is still with us.
Once married to Leon Russell who I think played piano on this album.
She’s got a killer voice!
@@brianherrington7226 he was married to Mary McCready, not Merry Collins and he didn’t play on this track.
@@MonkeyFace544 I stand corrected and he played piano on Live With Me.
It's pure emotion vocal talent.

Thank you for your Service to our country. ❤🇺🇸
This was the most requested song by soldiers in Vietnam.
What you just wrote gave me goose bumps. Wow.
The woman shouting out 'rape, murder ' recorded her vocals in the middle of the night while she was pregnant. There is a documentary about background singers like her.
Love how this comes full circle and finishes with "Love being a kiss away" > I think they were ahead of their time
Merry Clayton's voice was phenomenal in this song! Great choice by the Stones!
Probably the best Stones tune, bar none.
62 year old woman here. Your views are spot on. Thanks for keeping it fresh.
- a dark song, but ends with the hope that love can prevail
I am not such a big Stones fan - but I got to confess that some of their older stuff is great. This one for example
Maybe you would like "Paint it black" or "Angie" as well
The Stones telling it like it is for real.. and the louder you play it the better it sounds.

“Can’t You Hear me Knocking?” by the Stones. You’ll love it.
Not a huge stones fan but this is still the best rock n roll song ever. Heard it a gazillion times but still never get tired of hearing it. Stones were not about hippie beauty, peace, and love, more about anger, strife, and destruction...which was all happening simultaneously
Although this song sounds so good it had such a deep meaning 🎯
My all time favorite Stones song. It's stellar.
“Monkey Man” from the same album is a great track. “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” is about a year older. They still play it at the end of every show. “Satisfaction” is their most famous riff, song, …
When her voice cracks on the 3rd time through...and you hear Mick go 'whoa....'
Love how you look into the lyrical history of the music you react to. My husband was part of the last men to draft for Viet Nam. Music was very political back in the day. Thanks for this one❤
The average age of the American soldier in Vietnam was 19. Creedence Clearwater Revival also made some excellent songs about that war.
So appropriate especially today as well. As in over in the Gaza strip!!!!
This is my favourite Stones track. I used to sing it in one of my old bands back in the `70s. If you want a band that are badly underrated, but are truly great, try Little Feat. Dixie Chicken would be a great track to start with.

They called a young lady in at 3am to do the backup vocals. She was pregnant but she agreed to do it anyway. Shortly after she lost her baby.😢
How sad. I never knew that.
Merry Clayton.
When her voice cracks it is hands down the best piece of recorded music in history!
It’s not about children. It’s like someone’s addressing an audience, when someone refers to audience as children. Like ‘hey, kids’. “War, children, it’s just a shot away”
Rock n' roll MASTERPIECE! Great appreciation and reaction.
You're one of my favorite reactors when it comes to analyzing a song, keep up the great work!
That's Merry Clayton with the pipes. Go Merry! 🎤😫
The Stones never made a bad song ever! Please react to Wild Horses!❤

Jagger was asked what his favorite Stones cover tune was. This is it done by Grand Funk Live Shea Stadium 1971. Check it.
One of their greatest songs -and a great reaction
Greatest rock song.
You nailed it Shon! ROCK us into the new year. Spread the love Brother 🐶😎🇺🇸
Merry clayton is the soul of this song. With out a doubt a very under rated singer for sure.

Hi! I love your reaction to this amazing piece of music. Timeless sentiment that rings true eternally.
I would like to request "Wild Horses" by the Rolling Stones, that is such an exceptional song :)
One of my particular favorites from the Stones, amongst a few others. Did I say few? Nah, there are several...
"Can't You Hear Me Knocking" by the Stones should be next.
