This video is old and inaccurate. I re did the PT test with a group of young airmen that’s more in line with the current standards. Here’s the link. th-cam.com/video/oaubyLrNPMM/w-d-xo.html
For all those who don't know, the max for each exercise (to the best of my knowledge) is as follows: HAMR Run-- 50 sets Hand release Pushups: 40 reps, 1 min. Elbow Plank: 3:35
Bruh.. I appreciate u sacrificing yourself to demonstrate all the exercises examples and components! Lol I know you were tired but 😂. U got it done tho.
Here's the one thing with the HAMR. You can quit once you get enough points to reach what you are going for. You said that you made it to level 8 and stopped. That means that you were somewhere between 61 and 72 shuttles. I don't know how old you are, but that many shuttles guarantees you at least 54 points (for airmen under 25). So, if you max out your push ups and situps, you could have stopped running significantly earlier and still scored an execllent (54 shuttles for
That is an interesting perspective and one I didn’t consider. You’re definitely correct. When I was done, I was able to stop. In a 1.5 mile run, you cannot be done until you finish the 1.5 miles. Definitely didn’t consider this, but it totally makes sense. 🤙🏽
One other thing to add about the HAMR. I've been doing a lot of research on it, and it looks like you made one of the cardinal mistakes. The rules say that you have to make sure that at least one foot is on or past the line. Much like the rest of us, you've been conditioned that when you are doing something like this, you have to start BEHIND the line. That's not the case. You can have your back foot on the line when you start. If you run past the line completely, you are adding around 1 meter to each run. That means that for every 20 shuttles, you've run one additional shuttle.
😮😮😮😮. Now that I didn’t know. I filmed this back when everything was still unclear, and I just attempted it to see how it feels. A lot of things were wrong with my attempt, but I had no idea about your footing. That’s great info. 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Hand release push up and cross reverse sit up are for 2 minutes, and the plank is for as long as you can hold it. For the hand release push ups, once you come down the arms come out and extend, not just lift off the ground. Much harder. I agree
Just ran the HAMR today because the track was icy. I got to level 7 step 4 (54 total sprints). I can say it was absolutely brutal. Still got an 84.5 on my pt test though.
Yep. My son said that in his middle school he got up to like 50. But this HAMR test only goes up to like 15 levels. So I don’t know if it’s the exact same. Unless my son is a cyborg. Lol
Good luck when you go. From what I heard, basic training is still trying to figure out if they’re gonna allow these alternatives. So you should be fine as of now.
So the new standards were just released today and I had to look up what an HAMR was. Watching the video, I recognized the neighborhood. We live in the same neighborhood! Small world! Great channel you got here.

Active duty and been PT testing since it started in 2003/2004. The 1.5 mile run is still the easiest option IMO. It’s all about training early and not waiting until the last couple weeks before your test to start your prep. Good luck to all!!
@@florese4804 Its not “backwards”. I did the walk once, in 2016. It was brutal! You had to walk 2K in less than 16 minutes. It sounds easy, but trust me, it wasn’t.
I believe the beep test means you run from one end to the other stop until the next beep sounds then run to other side stop run when the beep sounds again and so on, the beeps increase as the test continues. Thanks for your time for putting this together.
Exactly. I did it that way, however for editing purposes I cut out a lot of beeps. If I had of left the beeps in, it would’ve sounded terrible as I sped up the footage. But you’re right.
Finally! Thank you for this. Now I can defend these choices. Of course the other branches will probably never stop making fun of us, but at least we know the truth
I think the people that will benefit from the HAMR, are the bases with out indoor tracks. Like at edwards when it's 125, doing shuttle run in the basket ball court.
(Disclaimer: I am not a professional fitness advisor) Nice thing about the plank is you can train for it effectively without actually doing it, by doing any exercise that works your core. Chin ups, in my case, are the only thing I've been doing lately besides running, but I just tried the plank and was able to get to 3m15s for max points for my age group (wasn't easy and I was cramping a lot afterward but I got it done). The main lifts, deadlift / barbell squats / bench press should all do great for plank endurance.
I just admit You are very interesting showing each option and example😂😂 I'm glad I came across one that isn't boring and getting straight to the point. Thank you for this channel !! I just subscribed and clicked the 🔔 lol

Definitely going to give the walk a tester before actually doing it, thanks for the vid sir! Also, the plank looks easy as hell, I can do one for 5 minutes, I wonder if it will be timed?
From what I just heard, they have some rough draft standards out already, so once I get them, I’ll probably do this video again, that way people can really get a feel. According to what someone told me, I actually failed the pt test with some of my scores.
I think that was the intention, but I can crank out a 98 right now on the regular test. I’m sure I wouldn’t have gotten a 98 using these methods. I would’ve been lucky to pass. Lol
@@Jodywithawhy ya the regular test is hard for the under 35 crowd. After that it drops off significantly. Once you get past 45 on the regular test you can practically walk the run. And for females a passing score on the run time is 16:22 for the under 30 crowd. So ya it all depends. The shuttle run could be tough if it was more of a sprint. The FFL does something similar but they increase the tempo of it until you are fully sprinting at the end which is actually pretty tough. As far as push-ups being replaced by those “hand-release push-ups” I don’t see that being harder at all. The reason regular push-ups are hard is because you maintaining tension the whole time. What ignorants fail to comprehend is the mile walk portion is not just walk a mile in a quick time. It's do it but keep at or below whatever HR level specified "good" they tell you. I get shin splints if I try to power walk so I'll stick to running my 1.5mile in under 10min like I've always done.
My confusion for the HAMR is, can your foot touch your line right at the beep? Or do you actually need to be on the line BEFORE the beep. Im still in the beginning stages of practice. But im finding that my foot is touching the line right as the beep sounds. Dont know if thats a missed shuttle or not.

Basically. There’s a beep that sounds off, and once you hear it your run back to the other cone. The beep gets faster and faster as time goes on, eventually you’re just sprinting back and forth.

Hi jody, quick question. Totally unrelated to the video, but when packing for BMT, if I’m not traveling on a plane, do my toiletries need to be travel sized? I leave in about a month for BMT and want to make sure. Thank you!
You can bring bigger sized items, but keep in mind, when you get to basic they’re gonna give you all the same things they told you to pack. And after a couple of days, you’ll good to the mini mall, and buy anything extra you need. You don’t want too much packed when you get there.
I served jointly on several tours with all forces. We elected to do the Army PT test since it was easier than the Marines, but harder than the Navy or Air Force. Those services with the exception of their Special Forces, don't have the ground combat requirements the Army and Marines have. I would say if your in good shape the latter services PT is not that hard to complete, at least for me. I ran 6 to 8 miles daily.

Security Forces is very easy to book, it's one of the most demanded jobs by the Air Force. I'm not saying you're guaranteed it, but very likely. Best of luck.
In this video, I messed it up. I read the rules for a HAMR test, and it’s different from what the Air Force is actually doing. The Air Force is basically just doing a pacer test. Each 20 meter distance you cover counts as one.

Yep. You have some officers that push 40 years, and the most enlisted personnel usually can do is 30 years. But you have to have certain ranks to push that far.
One thing everyone forgets or not aware is you need to train your breathing. If your not breathing from your diaphragm you are not maximizing your potential. Breathing from your chest is actually flight or fight mode. th-cam.com/video/SCnaeTihD-g/w-d-xo.html
@@guidedvisionsmedia I'd also add that if you are struggling with it, try the Couch to 5K program. It's a program designed to get you from "the couch" to running a 5k in 6 weeks of training (assuming you don't have to repeat any weeks). It's designed for three days of running each week, and 30 minutes each time. Week one is a 5 minute warm up walk, then alternating 60 seconds of running with 90 seconds of walking 8 times, then a 5 minute cool down walk. Week two is a 5 minute warm up walk, then alternating 90 walking/2:00 running 6 times and a 5 minute cool down walk...etc..etc. Each week builds a little more running and a little less walking. There are plenty of free apps out there to time it for you (I use the one by ZenLabs and it is great). The one key is to make sure you push yourself. I had a friend who was a decent runner who tried to use it to increase his speed. I was out with him when he ran his first workout, and when he did the 60 seconds of running, he was doing a very light jog. I pointed out that if he wanted to get better, his run should be at least at the pace he normally runs, and for the first couple of weeks, since the runs are fairly short, they should have been almost sprints for him. He started that the next day, and he said that by week 4 he was seeing some pretty significant improvement.
I can push myself no problem but my heart rate is always really high. Why does the heat rate need to be low? I’m just as good and never fainted. I’m 26 now and still run the same 6:50 mile I ran in high school
I'd like to do the core exercises instead of the situps and the new pushups and the 1.5 run. I don't want to do the shuttle or walk because of wanting to get it done lol. Plus I'm a marathoner, half marathoner, and triathlete.
You have be selected for developmental special duty, and then from there let your leadership know you’re interested in becoming a recruiter. You have to be at lease an E-5 before you can become eligible.
That walk was intense. You talking about legs on fire. Plus your heart rate has to be at a good pulse. It’s not easy like it’s sounds. I heard walk and thought “oh yea I got this”. Lol. NOPE
It’s very uncomfortable trying to get a good score while walking. I run. I’m a runner by nature. I can run 5 miles easy. That walk was very uncomfortable.
On the HAMR you are only supposed to make it to the other side before the beep. Then you go again making it before the next beep (level). The time in between the beeps gets faster and faster. Some reserve units have been testing the HAMR for a while now. It sucks but just wanted to let you know you were doing too much. Lol
Lol. I know. I did it that way. But for editing purposes and not to bore the audience, I sped the footage up, and removed a lot of the beeps, or else it would’ve been weird. Lol.
I'm genuinely unsure why the walk would be harder? If you're capable of running the mile and a half, why would a shorter walk be more exhausting? I wouldn't do it since i'm fine with running and wouldn't want to extend a PT test any longer than necessary, but it doesn't seem like it would be harder.
It’s actually not harder. Just uncomfortable. It’s really uncomfortable walking that fast for that long. Your legs start to feel like bricks. But it’s not really hard. I would just prefer the run.
@@Jodywithawhy indeed, I play soccer a lot so these are the exercises we do daily, when I was living in Jamaica I would walk for miles just to get to my destination.

We used to do shuttle runs like that in elementary school every year for fitness evaluations, hard my ass.
Jokes on us the plank is 3 minutes 🤪
😂😂😂. Yea they did a lot of things different from this video. So I’m redoing it to get a feel for the real version.

The actual score charts came out. Can you try this again?
I am gonna redo it. My schedule has just been super tight. 😩.

Lol. You know what’s crazy….I have one. 👀👀 lol
Lol ahhh shhiiieeoooot😂I know that feelin when you wanna curse💀
😂😂😂😂😂😂. I caught myself. Lol
I wanted to see how fast you we’re running for the shuttles in real time.
The USMC is laughing at the new AF PT

@@Jodywithawhy haha, I sure will! & that’s what I’ve seen and heard about the eye consult. I feel good about it & your videos were right about MEPS smh..was stressing for nothing! Thank you for the help on your videos 💪🏾 I’ll continue to watch!
i don’t get the reqs for the hamr tho ? like do you just keep running back and forth lol ?
Basically. There’s a beep that sounds off, and once you hear it your run back to the other cone. The beep gets faster and faster as time goes on, eventually you’re just sprinting back and forth.
What allows you to use the alternatives? Are you only able to do those if you have an injury, or is it optional..?
It is optional for everyone now. This video is old and doesn’t reflect the pt test right. If you wanna get a more accurate reflection this will help. th-cam.com/video/oaubyLrNPMM/w-d-xo.html
Can you pick in bmt or is it just 1.5 push ups and sit ups?
Nope. Just the regular pt test. I made a video recently covering the required scores needed. It might help. th-cam.com/video/nLI_qK1uTf4/w-d-xo.html
Can you do the mile walk instead of the 1.5 mile run in boot camp?
No. Only run, push ups and sit ups
Can you do a video talking about waivers needed for MEPS? Like needing an eye consult then getting a waiver.
This video discussing the most common issues, but it does give insight on the medical waiver process in general. th-cam.com/video/ynKjsxegEPE/w-d-xo.html
Thank you!
Lol the air force came with the standards for the alternatives and the hamr run is insane
I have since recreated this test with some young airmen. I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but they make the test look easy. th-cam.com/video/oaubyLrNPMM/w-d-xo.html

When I go on I'll definitely have to stick with the original. You do get that option right? XD
It’s not even available right now. They won’t allow the other options until next year. So you still have time.
@@Jodywithawhy Well i'll be joining next year or early the year after. Will these PT changes be an option?
@@TAnimations they’ll be an option for people after basic training. As far as people in basic training, they haven’t figured out if the options will be allowed. Still more to come.
@@Jodywithawhy Thank you! I appreciate the help.
So you can choose from the 3? A mile walk is east it would only take you 16-20mins max
Yea you can pick. But I’m telling you, that mile walk isn’t easy. It sounds easy, but it’s definitely a challenge. Lol
@@Jodywithawhy ill love that coz ive been down by 24% bodyfat and about to join in a month i wanna do atleast 21 or 20percent no boarder and i can run a mile for 15mins since there is a walk thats nice
The shuttle run Is just the PACER test
So I have a mock test tomorrow will I have the option to do any of these or will be the basic test as push-ups and sit ups and run
From what I heard, these won’t go into effect until 2022.
@@Jodywithawhy oh roger thank you very much
Hey brother I have a question for you I only qualified for two jobs in the air forces. Which was security forces and services. Im just waiting on the next jobs openings for this month. I would like security forces… what are the chances to get it. Because really don’t want services.
Security Forces is very easy to book, it's one of the most demanded jobs by the Air Force. I'm not saying you're guaranteed it, but very likely. Best of luck.
@@HeroMaar thanks I appreciate it that 👍🏼
Like OneTrooper said, it’s pretty easy to book, because it’s our biggest career field.

Hold up you can choose to walk!!?????…. The hell since when????
Since 02 July. It’s not fully implemented yet, but it looks like it will be available for sure by 2022.
How does it feel meeting a lower standard than your predecessors?
I would love to see my predecessors attempt this test. It’s not as easy as it sounds.
The #s just came out and I still don't understand the shuttles.
In this video, I messed it up. I read the rules for a HAMR test, and it’s different from what the Air Force is actually doing. The Air Force is basically just doing a pacer test. Each 20 meter distance you cover counts as one.
@@Jodywithawhy Ahhhh. That makes more sense. Thank you! I've got 2 more test left before retirement. I'll stick with the regular stuff.lol.

Can I talk to a recruiter and get all my paperwork and stuff done while I'm 18 and in high school so as soon as I graduate I can ship
Definitely. You can do it as junior when you’re 17 years old too.
@@Jodywithawhy I was I can do my paperwork 30 days before my 17th birthday. Is that true?
You can do all the paperwork 30 days out, but you can’t officially do anything until your birthday.
lol I did my 2.5 mile walk I’m 29 minutes the army’s alternate to the 2 mile when your on profile
You don’t have to do pull ups???
What if you choose to run instead of walk are they going to not count it?
You will have the choice of run, walk or HAMR. Once you choose one, you will have to stick with it for the test.

@@Jodywithawhy remember fellow serviceman brother you are only in competition with yourself take all the time you need to better yourself and be proud of your improvements
Hey Jody I have a question I want to join the air force in 2023 but I have flat feet with this disqualify me
Talk to your recruiter. You might be able to get a waiver
Yep. Talk with your recruiter. Flat feet are possible, but they are case by case. Your recruiter will be able to help you get the process started to see if your feet are good
This is unrelated to the video but can you work for the Air Force longer then 20 years?
Yep. You have some officers that push 40 years, and the most enlisted personnel usually can do is 30 years. But you have to have certain ranks to push that far.
Chairforce for a reason 😂
One thing everyone forgets or not aware is you need to train your breathing. If your not breathing from your diaphragm you are not maximizing your potential. Breathing from your chest is actually flight or fight mode. th-cam.com/video/SCnaeTihD-g/w-d-xo.html
How soon should I go to my recruiter about joining the Air Force?
I made a video about things to know before meeting a recruiter. I hope this helps. th-cam.com/video/D3_TR2IVreo/w-d-xo.html
I’m a correctional officer we do 60 push’s ups in 2 minutes none stop 40 in 1 minute mile 1.5 under 12 minutes
What’s the best way to practice for the 1.5 mile run?
I would say do sprint training two times a week, and also run 3 miles 1-2 a week. This will get you prepared for a 1.5 mile quick.
@@Jodywithawhy thanks for the response! I’ll get on it now! Gotta build up this stamina!
I have a pretty high heart rate too. So I would prefer the run just so I don’t have to worry about maintaining a heart rate.
😂 I wish we had it this easy in the
Army
I'd like to do the core exercises instead of the situps and the new pushups and the 1.5 run. I don't want to do the shuttle or walk because of wanting to get it done lol. Plus I'm a marathoner, half marathoner, and triathlete.
Yea. The 1.5 mile run will be easy for you.
Jody? Are you still recruiting in San antonio?
I’m a recruiting instructor. Not recruiting anymore.
@@Jodywithawhy that's so cool man how would you go about becoming a recruiter in your career?
You have be selected for developmental special duty, and then from there let your leadership know you’re interested in becoming a recruiter. You have to be at lease an E-5 before you can become eligible.
@@Jodywithawhy is it a similar process for being a MTI
Yep. Same process pretty much, just a different job.
The PAT is to enter the air force academy?
I don’t understand the question

Good video. Cheers 🍻 bro.
Lol.
This is a test they do for soccer players to see endurance vo2 max. It's called the Beep Test you can youtube it.
Well it’s a good thing I been training for PJ this will be a cake walk.
Doing the 21 day PAST work out , this is a breeze
Yea. This won’t bother you too much at all if you’re in special warfare shape.
It’s no way the AF letting y’all walkkkk 🥴 this is absurd
😂😂😂. I think the walk was removed from testing after so much disdain towards the Air Force.
I rather do the planks
I'm genuinely unsure why the walk would be harder? If you're capable of running the mile and a half, why would a shorter walk be more exhausting? I wouldn't do it since i'm fine with running and wouldn't want to extend a PT test any longer than necessary, but it doesn't seem like it would be harder.
It’s actually not harder. Just uncomfortable. It’s really uncomfortable walking that fast for that long. Your legs start to feel like bricks. But it’s not really hard. I would just prefer the run.
@@Jodywithawhy Thanks. That makes more sense. I'd definitely rather just run for a shorter amount of time than attempt something like that.
@@Jodywithawhy so really the walk is only mentally easier ?
The walk sucks, but I feel it’s physically easier. However, mentally I don’t like it just because of the burn you feel in your legs. Lol
