Jeweller here. There were some big red flags from the jump. First of all, tanzanites aren't nearly as valuable as she was claiming. With gemstones there can be a rare chance that you'll come across a specimen that's a unique colour or clarity, making it more valuable than it usually would, but not by this much. Plus, jewellers insure their packages. It's just a given, especially for a larger company like this because there's always more to lose when a piece goes missing that it's never worth it to take the risk. In fact, there's an array of high value courier services that we use, ranging from some pretty standard insured package setups to shipping pieces with bodyguards and transporting in armoured vehicles. That way, should a package get stolen, the business can always afford to replace the item. The problem here is what they were asking for is in another tax bracket to what it was actually worth. Those are just a couple of the big points but I could go on honestly. To someone who knows anything about the industry it just becomes plainly obvious that she doesn't have receipts/isn't telling the full truth. Also, to Jordan's point about them shipping the stone somewhere to have it cut, most jewellers outsource their gem cutting. Jewellers and lapidarists/gem cutters are very different professions. They may seem similar but that's not the case at all and there simply isn't enough overlap for a jewellery business to have a cutter in house and vice versa.
@@krazyworld6433 well the wild part is that they apparently didn't even pay $10k for the tanzanite. I'd say it does depend, as some Jewelers in my area do have it listed as in house even though they do mail it off, to another place of their company, I think the misconception stems from the mystery jewelery stores still hold over their practices to the common man and the wording used to describe it
@@soogymoogiI’d love an opal ring, but that’s exactly the reason I won’t 😂 it’s a 5.5-6 on Moh’s scale. I think that’s why things like diamond, moissanite and sapphire are so popular for engagement rings.
A ten THOUSAND dollar tazanite crystal? Tanzanite is "only" $100-800 per carat. I genuinely cannot tell if she's straight up lying for the sake of the video, if her signifcant other lied to her about how much money he spent on her (even though they're, like, totally not materialistic or anything because they're hippies broooo), or if they just straight up got scammed Edit as I didn't watch fully before commenting (I know I know): Okay, that question was answered, but interestingly, that was definitely raw tanzanite. The Tanzanian government banned the export of raw tanzanite in an attempt to support their local jewlers
I went to google and I found that for the 800/carat ones, there are those that go up to 10/11 carats, which brings the price to around 10k The ones ive seen at this price range aren't raw and are usually cut already But of course, none of that is relevant to this story because 10k was the price of the shaman experience, not the gem😊
from what i see online the export ban is only for tanzanite over 5 carats, so i'm guessing it was under that. Either that, or the "free" tanzanite from the 10k shaman experience is a loophole around the ban because it's not being sold
It rubs me off in a terrible way the fact that she is always trying to 1- seem relatable and not wealthy; 2- seem like such a good and kind person; 3- flaunt her wealth while doing all that lol She says she is just a little indie musician............. with a 10k ring. And we are like, such good people, look at the bunnyyyy! And like, my mom's house in Mali, and my 10k ring, and like, omg............... such a red flag
It's a sleight of hand. It has no relevance to the story except to tug at your heartstrings and get you emotionally invested since there was a massive curtain hiding all of the logical details. People with money know how to manipulate others into getting what they want.
It reminds me of the way the media frames certain people who face criminal charges. If they want to villainize you, they will put up your mug shot. If they want People to sympathize, they'll use the photo of you in your graduation robes or something like volunteering at an animal shelter. Brock Turner comes to mind.
It was to show he was just a gentle soul and also banking on pretty privilege and telling the story of rescuing the bunny. That woman’s hair cost big bucks! They paid $10,000 for a shaman experience (!) and get a Tanzania and didn’t even get an appraisal but just go with what the shaman said? These people are wealthy! They’re so out of touch with reality.
Hi, I'm a jeweler. It's pretty common to send stones to be cut somewhere else. (India) I agree that there should be a person/ tools on sight to cut stones, but it's cheaper. As a corp they should be ensuring any packages sent. Also Tanzanite is 100-800 per carat. (When cut) Buy lab, it's exactly the same but isn't destabilising Kilimanjaro.
I mean what is the destabilization of Kilimanjaro in comparison to the pressingly urgent cutting of this wealthy white mans definitely-not-made-up soul ties from a previous life? Have you no heart?? (full sarcasm, in case it wasnt clear)
I used to wear a ring of a similar style as a kid and it was worth so little that if I'd lost it my parents would not care. They'd only care that losing it would have bummed me out. The style is cheap as hell is what I'm saying. And no piddling little chunk of tanzanite is going to be worth 10,000 dollars! It's not even a precious stone!
@@foxbunsid bet that it's not that it's impossible to make synthetic tanzanite. It's just that at roughly $500/carat with no commercial/industrial value, no one would even bother.

Crystal queen at your service: Tanzania is one of the few places that it is explicitly forbidden to mine (Botswana and Madagascar as well) so I am promising you that this legitimate jewelry company had to report and send the crystal back to Africa and these folks are donezo
Thats not true at all. A simple google search will being up (for example) the process of applying to the govmnt of botswana for a minerals permit, or, on the Tanzanian gov site: "The Government plans to have this sector (mining) contribute 10% of GDP by 2025."
"The Mining Act provides indigenous rights to holders of primary mining licences and gemstone mining licences. These licences are only issued to Tanzania citizens or mining companies where the composition of the board and the shareholding structure consists exclusively of Tanzanian citizens. There are however exceptions under the Mining Act in relation to gemstone mining licences." -Velma Law, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
As someone who works at a jewelry store her whole story has tons of red flags. To keep your insurance as a jewelry store you have to send all packages with insurance it’s not an option. The price of the “crystal” was sus. And then the kicker was the image of the ring. That family heirloom? Did not look very heirloom plus it had an emerald in it. An older emerald would show a lot of wear. If I had to guess from looking it’s from maybe the 1980s but that style of ring was most popular in the 2010s.
Can you explain exactly what you mean by "like that"? Is it the angle? Is it something about the way he's holding it? And can you also explain *why* they should not be held like that? Maybe I'm being pedantic, but the thing her mom would be doing would be INTERPRETING, not translating. An interpreter works with live texts (speeches, presentations, actual people trying to communicate with each other), and a translator works with static texts (books, movies, poems). I can't imagine why the Red Cross would need a translator to travel to a specific impacted location, so the mom is probably an interpreter. You'd think someone whose mom does it for a living would know the difference, no?
Translating official documents perhaps? It can be really hard to get important documentation (marriage certificates for example) translated without either paying money or the assistance of a not for profit. One of my coworkers does migration law and some documents have to be filled out offshore and we just have to hope there is someone who can translate in whichever refugee camp we're sending things to.
It sounds like such an excuse, why would Red Cross give one of their interpreters a multimillion dollar mansion to set up base. An apartment or long term hotel situation, maybe a small house, those make sense. A *mansion*??
I'm genuinely astounded that her first video received such a positive reception at all. I guess yeah technically she had been wronged if her story is true but I've just never seen someone soooo difficult to relate to. From the 'oh im just a widdle musician and my hubby is just a tennis player' when they obviously have mad family money to have even gotten in this position, to the hippy woo woo chakra healing past lives that I can't even pretend to take seriously. That shaman did not have to try very hard to scam these two. They clearly have the money and connections to just take this to court why are they asking strangers on TikTok with far less resources than you to solve your problem for you. If you have 10K for chakra healing and a rock, you can hire a decent lawyer. The only reason not to go to court is if their story is leaving out some key details as to why the court might NOT rule in their favour, HMMMM. "TikTok do your thing." She knew what she was doing and made no effort to tell people not to leave fake reviews. She's playing a nice girl hippie act but there's a vindictiveness to this that screams spoiled mean girl. She wasn't asking for advice on how to resolve the manner properly, she wanted to force this business to give them more than the rock and ring were actually worth or ruin the business if they wouldn't.

I'm sorry...what does she mean by "shamans" who "unblocked their chakras"? Shaman is a term originating from Tungusic people of Siberia, which is used by Colonial sources to refer to any priest of any traditional religion the colonizers do not recognize as legitimate. Chakras are from South and East Asian traditions, primarily Hindu traditions, of spiritual wellness and understanding of Prana and Chi and such. I've heard people sometimes describe Mongolian or Taoist mystics and priests as "shamans" but little else in Asia is described that way in American parlance. So who were these guys, where were these guys, and were they saying they were "unblocking chakras" or is she just editorializing? I partly ask because if these "shamans" were other white hippies scamming her and Dawson it all makes sense, whatever. If they were traditional priests of Latin America or Afro-Latin traditions (which in my experience is the most common ones these blond ass hippies always want to see) then it's unlikely they'd recognize chakras. Maybe New Age latino "shamans"? I might be fixating on a weird part of the story, but these hippie retreats often cost lots and lots of money.
I'd say it does depend, as some Jewelers in my area do have it listed as in house even though they do mail it off, to another place of their company, I think the misconception stems from the mystery jewelery stores still hold over their practices to the common man and the wording used to describe it
My thought is that for the Tanzinite to be worth that much, it would have to be HUGE - not something you can just cut and set in a ring.
the funniest part is that Tanzanite isn't the greatest engagement ring stone, it's a 6-6.5 on Moh's scale meaning it will be scratched by dust.
Yeah just seems like a bad idea. Ammolite is my fav stone but i wouldnt want it on engagement jewelry.
@@soogymoogiI just googled it. It's so pretty omg
@@soogymoogiI’d love an opal ring, but that’s exactly the reason I won’t 😂 it’s a 5.5-6 on Moh’s scale. I think that’s why things like diamond, moissanite and sapphire are so popular for engagement rings.

It is not inauthentic to delete google reviews from people who literally haven’t bought anything. What is this lady on about??
A ten THOUSAND dollar tazanite crystal? Tanzanite is "only" $100-800 per carat. I genuinely cannot tell if she's straight up lying for the sake of the video, if her signifcant other lied to her about how much money he spent on her (even though they're, like, totally not materialistic or anything because they're hippies broooo), or if they just straight up got scammed
Edit as I didn't watch fully before commenting (I know I know):
Okay, that question was answered, but interestingly, that was definitely raw tanzanite. The Tanzanian government banned the export of raw tanzanite in an attempt to support their local jewlers
I went to google and I found that for the 800/carat ones, there are those that go up to 10/11 carats, which brings the price to around 10k
The ones ive seen at this price range aren't raw and are usually cut already
But of course, none of that is relevant to this story because 10k was the price of the shaman experience, not the gem😊
meaning the reason the ring disappeared is probably because the company contacted the authorities and sent it back to africa LOL
from what i see online the export ban is only for tanzanite over 5 carats, so i'm guessing it was under that. Either that, or the "free" tanzanite from the 10k shaman experience is a loophole around the ban because it's not being sold
She said she planned on making earrings and other rings from that same stone??? Did she want one molecule on each piece of jewelry lol

And its not even the ring that cost 10k.. ITS SHAMAN EXPIRIENCE. FOR 10000.
Why did she bring up the rabbit?! Was it filled with tanzanite or something? How is it related?!?!!

Hi, I'm a jeweler. It's pretty common to send stones to be cut somewhere else. (India)
I agree that there should be a person/ tools on sight to cut stones, but it's cheaper.
Tanzanite actually has never been successfully synthesized in a lab I don’t think
Exactly. Thank you especially for the last part.
Moral of the story: Not every dispute needs to be publicized on TikTok.
It's not even a precious stone!
it's rarity and price comes from the fact that you cannot create synthetic tanzanite, and it only comes from a single area of Tanzania.
@@foxbunsid bet that it's not that it's impossible to make synthetic tanzanite. It's just that at roughly $500/carat with no commercial/industrial value, no one would even bother.
@@TheMisternyanExactly. Most stones and gemstones can be synthetically recreated. I imagine the only ones that can’t are ones which special flash (but even then, it may still be possible just more expensive)

Thats not true at all. A simple google search will being up (for example) the process of applying to the govmnt of botswana for a minerals permit, or, on the Tanzanian gov site: "The Government plans to have this sector (mining) contribute 10% of GDP by 2025."
i can't find anything online that says that's true- just that it's much more heavily regulated than in other places
"The Mining Act provides indigenous rights to holders of primary mining licences and gemstone mining licences.

Yeah I've literally found Lahaina aid scams via TH-cam comments
