  • METRA North Central Train #106 running express between O'Hare Transfer and Western Ave winds up in a race with Milwaukee West Train #2216 as we round the curve at Tower B-12. Despite the station stop at River Grove, we catch up to #2216 and arrive neck and neck at Western Ave, where both trains are stopped due to crossing traffic on the UP West Line.
    For the conclusion of this thrilling race check out the second part of the video at:

    Thanks Jersey Mike! Seeing a nice Metra ride video works like a time machine to take me back to Chicago. If you commute on a regular basis you make new friends taking the train to work as well as your work colleagues, a train ride can be a great time to socialize. I have missed the train in other cities I have worked in that don't have a good commuter train system, and although Metra trains seem may old they keep them running through some of the really awful Chicago winter weather you can get that can make you regret trying to take a car to work.

      Is there something special about 414?

    • @MPIEMDRailfan4
      @MPIEMDRailfan4 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      414 was wrecked in a crash in early 2016, and everyone thought it was scrapped. But, a few months ago, Metra completely rebuilt it. It is now an MP36PH-3C, one of six in service as of January 2017. It has fresh paint, so it looks spotless. 414 is also one of Nick (Metra MP36 407)'s favorite locomotives.

    Never mind. That's a CN line. Using CROR operating rules. That's an advance clear to medium. Then a clear to medium and finally a medium to clear.

    That station stop at 8:00 seems dangerous. Express train flying through, while people are boarding the train in the middle of the street?

    This was the Soo Line's route to Wisconsin, and only got commuter service in 1996. When the Soo absorbed the Milwaukee, they started using their route.

    What does it mean you have a Red light on top of a green light, or vice versa? Which one do you follow?

    • @PositionLight
      @PositionLight  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both, different combinations of lights mean different things. R/G is Diverging Clear.

      From what I understand about signals, if the top head is a solid green the train can go no faster than the speed limit. If the middle head is a solid green the train can go no faster than 30mph and if the bottom head is a solid green the speed limit is 15mph.

    • @blakebiermann4316
      @blakebiermann4316 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If a signal is not all red, it is not red at all.
      Basically meaning, you only stop if everything is solid red. That's all most people will ever need to know

    ORD needs an integrated station in its soon-to-open consolidated rental car facility (or one next to terminals) and then use the ex-Wisconsin Central and Altenheim Subdivision along the Eisenhower Expressway for the fastest route to downtown. The WC and MDW congest too much of the ex-Milwaukee West line and from Tower A-5 in Amtrak and the MDN also add to the congestion. And let's not forget the mess that is at Tower A-2.

    The signal at junction 17 threw me off a bit (flashing yellow over green). First thing came to mind was an advanced approach medium (just made it up). Could that be a possibility?
