    I love how Bloodborne in particular makes you realize after you’ve struggled and overcome foe after foe that none of it matters in the grand scheme of things and you can’t meaningfully change anything. I think that kind of existential hopelessness is a key part of cosmic horror

    • @wr5488
      @wr5488 ปีที่แล้ว +119

      You do change quite a bit!
      No more Church, their blood source is killed. (Ebreitas)
      No more eternal hell for the hunters, the source of the nightmare is slain. (Orphan)
      No more ‘Every Great One loses their child’, the cosmic predator is killed. (Moon)
      The actual town is screwed to hell and back regardless, but you DO save future Great One infants from being slaughtered in future hunts, you stop the eternal suffering of the hunters and you prevent the atrocities of the church from continuing (like literally harvesting children)

      @@spimbles Story is phenomenal but you have to read/explore/piece things together. But I will say out of all the Souls type games its the only one that answers all of its questions. Theres a reason for almost everything.
      Theres a 140ish page book on the story. (The Paleblood Hunt I believe?) Just kinda like a summary of the lore, but it works waaaaaaay better if you play the games first so you know what is being explained.
      Story is crazy simple on one hand and really complex on another. But its great!! They really do tie EVERYTHING up.

      @@wr5488 Yeah it's interesting Bloodborne honestly sometimes only aesthetically feels like cosmic horror, the fact we are able to see and hunt and even become a great one is not very cosmic at all. Redgrave also points out how we can clearly discern the motivations and rivalries between the great ones in an ethological sense, making them out to be just monstrous creatures just very, very far up the food chain.

    • @Hawk7886
      @Hawk7886 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have no idea how you'd label that movie one of your favorites.The US theatrical release was edited so poorly it's nearly unwatchable, and the "director's cut" found today is still a difficult watch.
      The brief bits of actual cosmic horror to be found pales in comparison to the nonstop screaming matches shared by the leads. It's headache inducing and the worst sort of drama; like a drunk schizophrenic arguing with their reflection in the window of a packed city bus stuck in gridlocked traffic.
      I understand why it's considered a cult classic, but I'd be more than happy if I never watch it again. As a 90s kid, the best way I could describe it would be like finding an unlabeled VHS tape in the attic and putting it into the living room player, only to discover it was a very private home movie your parents made years ago. Sure, my curiosity was satisfied, but I don't feel like it was worth it.

    The lighthouse is definitely Robert Eggars love letter to old school sea captains and Neptune mythology. Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe each give performances of their careers here, it’s very hard to pick a favorite between the two in this movie.
The underlying themes and story that isn’t flat out said is pretty interesting and worth investing some research after viewing this film. Every single item in this movie is accurate to the time period, along with accents that both actors “made up” for this movie, combining different old foreign languages together.
If The Northman is Robert Eggars Magnum Opus film, then this is 100% his most underrated gem of a film.
It’s weird, it’s in black and white, and there is a lot of metaphorical speeches given by the actors. It all comes together to give us a great mystery movie as well as a super original psychological Thriller.

    No matter how many times you have to re-upload a video, I'll always watch it. It sucks that excellent creators keep getting hit with unecessary roadblocks that prevent them from bringing their creations to the public; but works like yours will always be noticed, regardless of how hard any corporation tries to stifle them. This video in particular is incredibly well-done and informs the audience about its subject matter while also giving us a look into your own mind as you explain each subject (which is probably the best part of any of your videos, you have a genuinely fun and interesting personality that fits perfectly with the topics you choose to discuss). Thank you for continuing to push for your work to be allowed to exist on this ever-changing and relentlessly frustrating platform. Creators are what bring views to TH-cam, NOT the platform itself; you're a prime example of that fact, Elvis the Alien.
    Also, you may not agree with me on this but I would consider Europa Report at least an honorable mention to this list. In case you haven't seen it, it's an intense character-driven film from 2013 about six astronauts journeying to Jupiter's moon of Europa to search for traces of extraterrestrial life within our solar system. The first hour has some really thrilling moments that capture the overwhelming anxiety of being in space and its inherent dangers (interspersed with a little humor and a lot of science). The last thirty minutes are when you truly feel like you're watching a horror film on a cosmic scale, and that's all I'll say to avoid spoilers. I've watched it half a dozen times and still find it just as exhilirating, heart-stopping, and perfectly bittersweet. It's also technically well executed with a lot of NASA-based science fact alongside its alluring science fiction.

    I remember seeing Pandorum back in 2013, and was kinda appalled how panned it was, i thought it was a perfect evolution of 80's and 90's styles into the 2010's, and the twist was fantastic. Plus the monsters were cool and Dennis Quaid needs to be cast as a bad guy more often.

      Actually fun fact, he wasn’t the one who named the cat that and towards the end of his life he was far less racist than before.
      It feels like when people keep trying to hammer his racism it’s almost an attempt for them to get one to stop enjoying his works or works inspired by him. He was a flawed person who grew up with parents of former nobility. His views were shaped from an early age and it’s been documented that as he was further exposed to people his views were tempered. This wasn’t to say he didn’t remain racist but by the end of his life he eschewed the biological racism he had held for a long period of time. This isn’t to defend him but to remind people that he like everyone else was flawed

You take the role of a therapist who finds himself in a dream world haunted by a man seemingly intent on driving him insane. You have to go through your old patients case files and confront whats going on inside their head. Its a really good game even if the combat leaves a bit to be desired. I'd definitely look into it if your looking for a puzzle horror game.

The story essentially follows a prominent supernatural investigator documenting/assisting an actress and her curse which seemingly evolves into another case about what people are referring to as "ectoplasmic worms." As such it has documentary/found footage elements. It's in Japanese with English subs and was produced by the Ju-On/Grudge producer.

    I'm shocked you didn't include the La Herencia Valdemar (Valdemar Legacy)! It is a duology from 2010 and 2011 from Spain. It has Lovecraftian elements and Cthulhu even appears in the second film. It concerns the mysterious history of the Valdemar family, and there are cults and other crazy stuff; even a gnarly ghoul-creature hides in the mansion. There is a séance towards the end of the first film attempting to communicate with the Great Ones, but it goes horribly wrong and unleashes a ghoul which possess a dead body. The rest gets weird...Both were critically panned but the music (Composed by Arnau Battaler) is some of the best scores I've heard. I haven't watched them myself, but I plan to. It's hard to find them with subtitles unfortunately, so it may be tricky to get hold of. I love Gothic Horror (The first film is set in the late 19th century).
