This is a really GREAT demonstration of how to test antifreeze using the floating balls and the better tool. Some of the stuff on YT is total crap and you make it easy to understand. If you are inside a shop or its a little dark, the screen is black and you need light to make it work (just a tip).
You are welcome, John. The refractometer in the video is just a cheapo that I bought on eBay. A friend who worked in medical labs said it would do the job.
I just bought a specific gravity type antifreeze gage. It said my car is good for -20 degrees F, wife's car did not indicate at all - the pointer just hung straight down. Daughter's car same thing. Took the cars to a mechanic friend who pulled out his Bausch & Laum refractometer and it said all the cars were good to -10 to -15 degrees. So thank you for this excellent video. Now I know what to do. And thanks for no background music! I can actually hear you speaking clearly, unlike so many other videos.
Even being within spec, I would drain some of that coolant and add some distilled water and get yourself closer to the recommended -37C. High coolant concentrate is acidic and can damage your engine.
I wanted to use this to check an EVs coolant loops to make sure the dealership charged the coolant properly. Sounds like the refractometer is not the right tool for the job?
Most modern cars will require a 50/50 mix so 50% of distilled water and adding 50% of the right oe coolant concentrate, so check the cars Oe coolant specs, plus if you live in a really hot place around the world, change and flush you coolant completely after every 2 years even through they say it will last 5 years IMHO, that way you know its good, but also by using a re factomter for checking glyco and inhibitor test strips is the best way to check how good is you radiator coolant in your car, the refractometer only test the glyco levels and not the inhibitors in the coolant, which test strips do both and are a lot cheaper, but the same meter checks other things as well, as you can see on the scale on the viewing lens. :) sedo
FYI it seems like the orange Mopar MS 9769 HOAT coolant and the regular flouscent yellow mixes with any type of coolant from Durex have the same 50/50 mix temperature range ratings of -34°f to 265° f !!!!
To my best knowledge that's how the instrument works, though the science behind it is a bit above my pay grade. I use mine to make sure I that I have the correct mix of distilled water/coolant.
I'm happy with the upgrade, way better than a hydrometer. I have a friend who worked in a medical testing lab (old school when they used a refractometers to test urine), she said the cheap one should be just fine for antifreeze/coolant testing. BTW - One of these days I am going to get around to up grading the camera to get rid of the black bars. Your suggestion has not been forgotten.
Part of the problem is the logistics of mounting the camera. I've made a custom mount for short range & have a tripod. Eventually, I'll get around to upgrading and working out the new mounts. I'm very detailed oriented & hate to do crappy work, that equals slow but steady output. lol.

You just told me everything I needed to know that was NOT included in the user's manual. Which was just about everything. Thank you!
You are welcome, Barry. It's my pleasure to help.

Thanks for the compliment and the tip. I do a ton of research on the videos and try my best not to give out any bad advice. Happy New Year!
Trying to get an accurate reading on Bobcat Propylene Glycol coolant. Never knew such a tool existed. Very informative. Great job ! Thank you.

You are welcome. Thanks for taking the time to write the thoughtful comment. I do my best to make quality videos.
Great video. I saw these for sale at Amazon but had no idea how to use one. I appreciate your efforts and great explanations. Good job!

Good info
Thanks for the video, it's decent info. Plus that price range on the refractometer helped.
You are welcome, Joshua.
Even being within spec, I would drain some of that coolant and add some distilled water and get yourself closer to the recommended -37C. High coolant concentrate is acidic and can damage your engine.

Last time I used a refractometer was for making beer or whiskey !
I bought this for windscreen washer fluid. Why are there two scales on the windscreen fluid?

Thanks, clear and useful!

and how teste the aditives concentration? for corrosion etc?
Thank you.
You are welcome
What mean of green Type Ethylene Glycol coolant ?
Refractometers can measure both Ethylene and Propylene glycol based coolant/antifreeze.
@@Know-How-Now no no , i mean is there any colour code of E G related its concentration like
Red ,blue , pind and green EG
@@Know-How-Now pls suggest me powder form coolant additive powder pls
Did get the refractometer online or at a auto parts store .
I think I bought it on eBay.
PS, I have a friend who spent many years working in medical labs. She said a cheap refractometer would be fine for this purpose.
Thank You!
You're welcome!
Good vid is the refractometer actually reading coolant concentration?
To my best knowledge that's how the instrument works, though the science behind it is a bit above my pay grade. I use mine to make sure I that I have the correct mix of distilled water/coolant.
helpful
thank you
You are welcome.
you sound like you are from Philly or PA
You are on target, I live about 50 miles from Philadelphia.
Good ear!
Yeah when you said woarder I was like oh that’s a philly accent
Interesting!

TY. If you use a smartphone, then it should have the proper wide screen video format.
