This was one of the best videos for a pretty major repair that I have ever seen. I really had trouble with the 14mm bracket bolt at the back of the upper intake manifold. I eventually had to loosen up the bracket from below which allowed enough room to take off the power steering clamp and then pivot the manifold towards the front of the car and then take out the bolt (8 hours total). Before I put it back together I got out the grinder and made some improvements to the bracket...I removed the "hook" at the top and ground off the sides so that now I can get a wrench on it from the top or either side. Also, I want to emphasize your point about not over-torquing the 10mm bolts. I broke one off on the water channel cover and had to drill it out and tap it (another 8 hours). After that I replaced all of the bolts when I put it back together (the second time). While I had it all apart, I also replaced the manifold gaskets, plugs and coils. Also had to replace all of the coil connectors since the plastic had become so brittle (there are good u-tube videos on this also). This is our work van and has 261,000 on it and still going strong.
I have no experience but it looks like just removing bolts n clamps! 8 hours!? Then it gonna take me 20 hours. I have this exact leak n im sure its the same reason same spot exactly.
Suggestion on this job (removing upper intake manifold): remove the windshield wipers / wiper assembly and the pan it sits in. SOOOO much more room (you can see in the video that it is removed); still not necessarily easy, but huge time savings due to more space in reaching the bolt on the backside of the air intake manifold. I was replacing the valve cover gaskets this weekend - fought it for a while then it came together quickly. I also took apart the air intake (two pieces) between the filter box and the upper air intake; it was much easier to get to the two vertical support bracket bolts on the backside.
Thanks for the video. Finished putting my '05 all back together last weekend. No more leaks. It took FOREVER to clean up the coolant valley. Lots of scraping, scrubbing, standing on my head, cussing, etc. Decided to replace intake gaskets, and rear spark plugs while I was in there. I live in a very dusty area in Arizona, and would advise stuffing the intakes with towels to avoid getting debris (or dropped bolts/nuts) down the intake.
ASE Certified Tech here, so for the bottom plate no gasket is available, however for BOTH lower intake AND upper plenum, gaskets ARE available! Do yourselves a BIG favor and put new ones on! Also super easy to replace spark plugs with upper plenum off so that would be the time to replace them too. Iridium ones (should) be used since they are hard to replace, sound advice :)

I'm trying to familiarize myself with this strange looking engine as I have to change the spark plugs and plan on replacing all the gaskets, pcv valves & possibly the wiring Harness for both knock sensors to kill all birds with the same stones. What exactly are you calling the "bottom plate"? And what should I do if someone put rtv silicone sealant on that plate, assuming it's a metallic gasket, hence bending it upon upper manifold (if I said the correct name) removal ? This question is out of foresight as I ran into this problem before while changing the spark plugs on a Kia sorento years ago.

I saved this video 2 years ago thinking it could benefit my wife's 2004 Toyota Sienna LE 8 seater. It was leaking coolant and was overheating unnoticed by her and own son, until it got towed for unknown coolant loss 2 days ago. The following day I refilled it with coolant and decided to test drive it. I saw the spike of the temp gauge on my way back to our place but noticed no coolant spills on the pavement, so I pulled over and decided to tow it back to prevent further damage. Yesterday afternoon I decided to find the source of the leak and found that the T connectors of the heater cores of the front and rear broke. I replaced it with a 5/8 inch heater hose T-connectors and refilled with distilled water this morning. Fired the engine and it looked fine, no overheating and decided to drive the vehicle to my friend's house for a recheck. When my friend, who's a driver mechanic, came back he said there were pools of wet leaks still in the front and passenger side and possibly a massive leak. That was what made me watch this again. Over the years I have replaced parts and maintained this vehicle religiously, since this was what the family uses for any occasion, e.g. school, work, errands, road trip coast to coast, etc and no matter what haters write I still consider a reliable vehicle.Guess I have to check the water outlet now for the first time in 16 years. Just discovered this exact same issue. Same drip-same place. Saw the leaking area while I was doing valve cover gaskets/spark plugs. 154,000 mi on a 2005 Sienna. I am in state of denial since I have seen plenty of this engine already. The good news is I have learned the "tricks" to removal and installation of the Plennum which you demonstrated. It's a slow leak granted, but te repair has to be done. The back valve cover gasket oil leak HAD to be done ASAP since it was leaking oil on friends driveways and such. Great video! Hello Mr. Tsab, I just noticed the exact same leak under my 2004 sienna, some coolant between the engine and transmission. I only see one drop on the concrete every month so I think the leak is minor for now. If I leave it would it bring further consequences. Thank you!!
Jorge Guerrero any coolant leak can cost head gasket bad. If you see leak check your coolant often. This type aluminum head and block it doesn't show temperature go up. I do recommend get it repair if you see drip.
I had the same problem on 2004 sienna with 80,000 miles, on my sienna it was the plastic thermostat housing body leaking (replace the plastic housing body and thermostat and round thermostat gasket with Toyota OEM part) what was also leaking was a small hose off the same area that was 6 months ago and it fixed the problem; now it has a small leak again very very slow and now I'm thinking its this gasket on Tsab video =( , I also replace my radiator with a quality aftermarket on I got from Amazon (so far so good)
TT Innovations make sure check for your fan. My reservoir is over flow. My temperature gauge doesn't show high but my reservoir is over because my fan control module doesn't work. Also that cause over pressure sure it have this problem for my van.

Jorge Guerrero yes water is very important to the enginge. It can cause your car go over heat and it can blow your head gasket. In your temperature gauge may not show go high but it will over it. I believe your case it's water pump leak. Replace it sooner is better when you do replace your water pump replace the timing belt and other parts that necessary also. My man said the hell with torque values and just used the impact to reinstall the coolant cover plate and the manifold...lol. I mean I'll use the impact for alot of stuff too but for a critical engine part that has a specific torque value and tightening sequence use the freakin torque wrench bro.
Lookup 3M roloc discs. The white roloc bristle on a right angle die grinder is perfect for cleaning gasket off aluminum parts without scoring or damaging the part.
So glad to find this video. I have the exact same issue and the Toyota dealer diagnose the leak as the thermostat problem so they replaced it with a new one twice due to the leaking continued and two weeks ago they put silicon over the thermostat and told me if it leaks again they will need send the van to a motor shop to take it apart as it may be some kind of warping on the engine and it will coast me $5,000~$6,000!!! How long did it take you to do the job?
@@deriklfixit bro you buy fel-pro is junk. You should buy beck/arnley brand or mahle brand they are not that expensive but OEM quality. Next time if you want a good gasket this two brand is the best for the money. O'reilly's carry both brand. Autozone carry only mahle brand.
I've been driving my van for years with this leak, and not its getting smelly, but doesn't loose more than 1/4 cup every 2 months, probably time to fix it
Just replaced the water inlet tube, it broke and the wife drove it and started smoking. Got it all put back together now add, coolant, and its leaking out as fast as I put it in. Any ideas?
Do u get a coolant smell when car warms up mine did and resivor dryed up and the coolant was on the floor before this acord i changed my nock sensors and harnes after putting all partd back on this happened took to the shop to see if they can fix i hope this is the prblem thank u
I took it to the shop and they said it was head gasket but it is not so im going to do the job myself i notice that after the enjien warms up that the coolant also runs down the back end of the car near the gas tank it is a 2000 avalon
Great video, man. I got a coolant leak near the upper water bypass hose on my 1MZ-FE. Could it be the intake manifold gasket instead of the inner water outlet?
Highly doubtful it's most likely to be the same issue as in the video. It was the case for mine as well. Pain in the ass to do but while I was in there did valve cover gaskets plugs and knock sensors.
@@nb6584 , thanks for replying. You're right. Luckily the leak has been minimal so far--I check the tank level frequently. I've also used an infrared thermometer to check the temps in different areas of the engine--so far, so good. But when I do get the inlet valley fixed, I'm taking it to a pro who's done it a couple times. It's way out of my league. Thanks again.
Great video except one important, very critical part of the whole job; showing the part when you took out that challenging nut from the back of the upper intake manifold. You spent unnecessary time in the easy part and left the most challenging job out of the whole video.

There is no gasket for this part, which Toyota also confirmed. This job was done correctly using the high heat and oil resistant silicone sealant.

You can use Razor blade to clean it. I used wires brush and air sand.

Don't go to that dealership they don't know how to fix or diagnose nothing. The only thing they know is take your money.

You need to tracking down to see where it leak from if coolant leak that much shouldn't be hard to spot where it leaking bro.

Leaking coolant valley pays big money for techs
I'm a total amateur. Took me about 16 hours, being very thorough, I don't own a power ratchet. Also replaced intake gaskets, and rear spark plugs.
What size is the rubber hose that you replaced?
