Some of you have pointed out Sonic CD was on Gems Collection, not Mega Collection-my mistake! Either way, I played both collection games, but never got around to Sonic CD. 😔 I will have to change that soon!
@@battleapple what’s important to note is that the gems collection only gives you the US soundtrack: which goes for of an atmospheric tone to match the severity of the situation and Eggman’s ambitions. IMO it doesn’t work as good for a Sonic OST since they should be bops before the invoke seriousness.
One thing I love about Quartz Quadrant is how after the piano shows off, the flute awnsers, like a conversation. But in the bad future, the flute never responds. There is no lead instruments. The flute is dead.
cool video! an additional note: the "past" mixes end up sounding different than the other tracks because while the future and present mixes were made using cd quality audio the past mixes were made using instrumentation from the console itself which is why they sound closer to what you'd hear in sonic 3 than what most of the sonic cd tracks sound like (also, it's probably a little hint from sega that cds were the future and thus the present and future mixes are made using cd audio)
@@battleapple if you love this soundtrack Nights into Dreams and Christmas Nights are from the same team and even remixes a track or two from Sonic CD (Robotnik’s theme has a mashup with the opera singing boss from Nights, found in the Christmas Nights soundtrack). The Gillwing Theme goes _very hard,_ I think it’s the best song next to Reala’s theme.
The past songs use the PCM sound chip inside the Sega CD add-on which allows for sample-based sound which is more similar to the SNES. The Genesis sound chip was only used for most of the sound effects and wouldn't be capable of producing the past music as is.
That makes even more sense now as a double entendre as Sega was fairly ahead of their time for making disk-based media a main platform to store digital media 🤯🤯🤯🤯

sonic cd ost makes me feel so weirdly emotional and happy, it's nostalgic in all of the best ways. Also the stage vibes are amazing, sonic cd and sonic 1 have the best aesthetics of the classic era imo.
Fun Fact about the Past music: Originally they were also going to be CD audio quality like the rest of the OST but since they were running out of space, they instead used the built in PCM chip of the console to make them. Personally I think this decision ended up being even better since it makes all the Past tracks sound more archaic and retro which is perfectly fitting for their time period!

God quarts quadrant is one of my favorite tracks. Especially when it gets to the breakdown where everything sounds peaceful. The present theme def sounds fast paced like we gotta hurry and get that good future. And once you do. The future mix just sounds even more peaceful

The reason the US got a bespoke soundtrack was because Sonic CD was being developed right in the middle of the sampling controversy of the 90s (Backlash for heavy use of samples and people wondering if the songs could even be counted as new songs. For example: Ice Ice Baby, or U Can't Touch This). Well, this OST has a lot of samples, including some very large and identifying sections from famous songs. Just listen to the boss theme when you get to it for a blatant example. That controversy was mostly in the US, so I imagine Sega had the OST replaced here for one that doesn't use samples so they could stay out of that controversy. In my opinion, this was good, cause that meant we got two amazing soundtracks out of one game. I will admit the JP version tends to be better to listen to, but the US has a bunch of songs I heavily prefer over the Japanese originals (Every single bad future, Wacky Workbench Present, Special Stage, not to mention the main theme, Sonic Boom) and I find them to be incredibly fitting for the levels they play in.
Sonic CD is such an interesting entry in that, due to wanting to make a good future in each zone. It became more about exploring each level to find the past warps and then the robot fabricator. Instead of racing as fast as possible to the goal like most other 'classic-style' sonic games.
24:19 everyone hears a different thing in this part, but i like to imagine the sample says "Yo! Just forget this place!!" which really fits since the level is in the bad future, meaning you can't save it anymore so it's better to just forget about it
The sample in question is from a live performance of Kiss’ Hotter Than Hell and it’s Gene (the singer) saying “Let’s Get This Place…” but maybe the composer could’ve heard of wanted us to hear something different from it
Sonic CD was the bane of my existence in December of 1996...My father got me the game for our Windows 95 IBM PC for Chanukah and I was all set to play! The problem? My computer didn't have "Direct X" so the game wouldn't play! I had a friend who had it for the Sega CD so I got to play it there...I finally got to play my PC version of Sonic CD when my other friend got a Windows 98 Gateway PC and it worked on there...Years, later, my dad got a new computer with Windows XP, so I thought I would finally be able to play Sonic CD on my own computer...BUT NO! It said I needed "Dino 2D"...So once again, I was locked out of playing this game for PC! I finally got the mobile version around 2011 and that's when I discovered the Japanese soundtrack. Epic! Glad you discovered this gem of a game and soundtrack!
So great seeing you react to this amazing soundtrack. I was always really into the Bad Future versions, just felt very exciting and pumping, really interesting to see your reactions to those.
Sonic CD's OST - both of them- is probably my favorite video game OST of all time, maybe next to RuneScape. Listen to Tidal Tempest Present JP or Stardust Speedway Present (US) and find me any other video game music from the early 90s, let alone the late 90s, that sounds like that. It was all so ahead of its time.

Sonic CD JP is far and away my favourite OST in the franchise. Just like you, when I first played this game on the PS3 forever ago, I could *not* believe this soundtrack was made in 1993 but we all know SEGA throws down in the studio. Sidenote: Quartz Quadrant Good Future is my #1 song in the series and it's been my ringtone since 2016, the song sounds like the BGM for Heaven.
I'm 41 and this is my Jam! Sonic Jam if you will! Took a discman to school with me with the actual game disc playing all the music so it was bad ass on school bus trips!
I love this soundtrack especially because it has variations. I'm glad you like Quartz Quadrant's past cause that is my favorite, the whistle in it captivates me. I really enjoyed seeing you react to all the music, It felt like my same reactions all over again! Such a great and creative soundtrack!
It's definitely worth trying out, but Sonic CD is VERY frustrating on a first time playthrough If you want the "good" ending. Just go through it and enjoy the bops🎶
It's fun how you mentioned Quartz Quadrant having the 'same starting chord' as Tidal Tempest. As it turns out, throughout the entire tracklist there's a prominent use of the pentatonic scale -- sort of like a common theme that ties the whole soundtrack together. These tracks really are a masterpiece.
Aaaah!! Tysm for reacting to some of the tracks of this wonderful game, literally a childhood classic for me! I also hope you react to the rest of the JP/EU OST along with the US! The US soundtrack is very underrated!
Very fun fact: the little planet song used in the games D.A garden feature is dubious dephs present theme, sonic stream on the 1994 album "sonic cd remix" is its good future, and parts of its bad future is heard on the same 1994 album in the song "techno power remix". also 90s and 2000s sonic albums are weird, check them out.
Its awesome seeing how well you could tell the settings of the tracks. You immediately caught on that Collision Chaos P Mix was prehistoric and Tidal Temptest was underwater!
23:53 Here’s a food for thought: Both this music track and the music track of “Qwark’s Hideout” from the first Ratchet & Clank game share the same sample. The sample, “Let’s get this place”, is sampled from an old KISS live concert.
Sonic CD (Japanese) is definitely one of my favorite Sonic soundtracks! And I even grew up with the North American version (still love that one too). Better to experience this awesome music late than never!
You should definitely check out the US tracks. While the JP tracks are S tier, the US ones are still A tier. The only real criticism of the US soundtrack I have is that they didn't redo the Past tracks, only Present and Future, so it's a little incongruous in comparison as a whole. It did give us some standouts like Sonic Boom and has its own vibe, so I'm glad we got two soundtracks in the end.
@@20000dinoI love Wacky Workbench Present US, all the US Stardust Speedway themes(i miss how Gems Collection let you race Metal Sonic with the US _Good_ Future music), Tidal Tempest Present US...
Sonic CD’s JP soundtrack might be the best Sonic OST imo. Collision Chaos Present is one the first tracks I think of when this game comes up. It’s got that heavy New Jack Swing vibe goin on. 🎶🎧🎶
The vibe of sonic CD is honestly unmatched, I really wish future classic sonic material took more inspiration from CD. Just the beginning intro has so much more character than the whole of sonic superstars. Referred to as Junio or Toei sonic, the sonic from CD has this essence of coolness and a subdued sense of edge that no modern interpretation of classic sonic has matched, just compare his top speed running animation in CD to the one in superstars you will see how much more character the CD iteration has. Instead classic sonic today is used as this cutesy mini sonic where in CD he was this silent protagonist who meant business against the actual threatening Robotnick and metal sonic. The sense of urgency in the game is shown not told. For example, the time travel mechanic with the bad future works as a consequence of what would happen if sonic dosnt stop Robtonick, the S tier OST also reflects this via the different instrumentation and higher BPM. My personal favorite is the bad future as every track means business and the more difficult version of the stage really gets you pumped up trying to blast through Robotnick's machinations at top speed. I would highly recommend Alex Yard's videos on Sonic CD music theory, he gives an amazing breakdown on how layered sonic CD is from a music perspective.
I'm sorry but I'm gonna add another comment, I'm just too excited 😅 My favourite song in this beautiful ost is without a doubt, is Quartz Quadrants present Something about this song is just.. makes me shed tears everytime, ... that middle section is just everything to me😭 I also love how this song uses the anime chords, naofumi hataya is just a genuis, literally a timeless ost and will forever be my favourite piece of music and sonic cd is the best sonic game ever.. (Well for me atleast lol)
I heard the controversy of CD, but I was excited to give it a shot in origins, I was NOT disappointed, 3&K has a more natural and sonic platformer feel, but I wish Sonic CD was it's own franchise, it's the game I've been more willing to replay than almost any other game. The soundtrack and background art are what got me completely hooked, though. The atmosphere this game gives is something impossible to describe. It's like you feel nostalgia, excitement, coziness, and loneliness with every song. I was just addicted to whacky workbench past theme and background for awhile, (which was good because those generators can be annoying). 10/10 game but man it's not for everyone.
@@Aidan86BG EXACTLY! And btw you should've tried the 2011 version because it by far the best version. Origins honestly ruined most of the classics especially CD. But I'm not gonna get to all of that now. Anyway THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING THIS MASTERPIECE. Srsly not alot of people have common sense like you bro!
@DubiousDepthsRadio Yeah, it's just a super niche masterpeice, as for the whole origins hate, I think it deserves the hate it gets, but i never had too many issues and when I did have them I didn't care, but handling what should be a simple collection of mobile games as poorly as they did is unnaceptable.
17:36 Tidal tempest actually says so much about this game’s soundtrack. In a lesser game, this melody and progression would be the game’s main theme that it interpolates in every other song on the soundtrack. In Sonic CD, it is in a random, rather innocuous water level. It’s really something.
Absolutely loved watching you react to what’s probably one of the best soundtracks in the Sonic Franchise…arguably. lol My favorite out of them is Tidal Tempest Present since I can always visualize a diver getting ready to submerge himself into this incredible aquatic cavern and then exploring it with the tempo of the song. Can’t wait to watch your reactions for the rest of the soundtrack in pt. 2!
A part 2 video with the rest of the soundtrack would be amazing! Also, please check out the "Sonic the Hedgehog - Remix" album. All the tracks are arranged and composed by Naofumi Hataya and Masafumi Ogata who are the two composers of CD's JP soundtrack. :)
While all Sonic music tends to be amazing, I consider Sonic CD to be the gold standard for a Sonic soundtrack, its just SO good and I enjoy seeing ANYBODY react to it! amazing video!
If you do a part two to this, I think you should definitely cover the vocal themes and maybe even compare them to their American counterparts. You Can Do Anything is, in my opinion, the unofficial main theme of classic Sonic
Highly enjoyed the video. Always love seeing more people acknowledging this game's ost, and even though by just saying "wow," you still gave a thoughtful analysis and overall feelings which is always nice to hear. Definitely looking forward for a part 2 or even more parts cause Sonic CD's ost is more than just 2 soundtracks. I would love to see your reaction to some of the unused songs and album versions like there's a remix album for JP and an unused/full extended album of the US ost. It's so interesting and fun comparing each song altogether and acknowledging their differences.

I hope you are doing well and I look forward to seeing more of your videos 🙂 I recommend checking out music from the Castlevania series, especially Symphony of the Night and the DS games. Such a good choice for a listen through! I recommend doing a US (or NA as its marked) listen through after the JP OST. I wouldn't say that one is better than the other, and I really like the variation of both OSTs and how they each utilize the level motifs.
My favortie tracks from the JP version are Quartz Quadrant Present and Stardust Speedway Present. For the US version, probably Quartz Quadrant Present. Also, Happy 20th Birthday! 😀
This was a really fun time! It's awesome getting to see someone from my generation (1997 here) listen to one of my favorite VGM soundtracks that I discovered through the internet myself growing up. I also love your energy and vibe that shines through even though it's a lower energy video as you're tired, and your kitties too of course! 😊
I’m so happy I got this recommended to me! Your reactions are very fun to watch and I got to have a video to watch as I ate haha. I hope you continue to react to more video game music 🙏😭

I love seeing you react to Sonic music, CD has my favorite Sonic soundtrack!! I'd love to see a part two, the last two stage's music go super hard and I am curious what you think of them!!
The P mixes were done in the sound chip as opposed to being fully recorded and played of the game disk directly like the rest of the soundtrack . Because the P mixes were on the ROM they were used in the American version of the game also.

You never heard Sonic CD's music before? You've been missing out! Oh well, better late than never I guess. I played Sonic CD for the first time in 1997 when I bought it for my computer. Here in Australia, I got the American soundtrack for Sonic CD and I think I didn't even know that the original Japanese soundtrack for Sonic CD was different until a few years later. Even though I grew up with the American soundtrack, I still prefer the original Japanese soundtrack. That said, I love the original Japanese soundtrack AND the American soundtrack, it's just that I love the original Japanese soundtrack a little more than the American soundtrack. The original Japanese version of Tidal Tempest Zone Present might be one of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces of music ever created for any video-game in my opinion and I can't even describe in words how it makes me feel and that's why I always love it no matter what.
I remember game reviewers giving Sonic CD's NA release shit for changing the soundtrack. Diehard Gamefan in particular wasn't pleased. I missed out on Sonic CD due to not owning a Sega CD (though I dearly wished I had). The sound quality is phenomenal; this marked a lot of Sega CD titles, as developers had a lot more space to work with on a CD than on a cartridge. I hope you'll cover more Sega CD soundtracks. Snatcher, in particular, has phenomenal music, as do the two Lunar titles.
I played and beat this game many times. When you start the game, you start in the present version of every level. You will see signs where one sign says past on it and the other one, says future on it. If you pick one of these signs and successfully run fast enough without interruptions of any kind(i.e. a rock in your way, enemies, spikes, etc....), you will successfully go to that version of same level(you can tell by the background being green for a few seconds as Sonic travels through time), and the level will be completely different looking, but again, it's the same level you are currently on, just different looking now, as well as the music being completely different too.

While sonic 2 is my favorite classic game sonic cd definitely has the most style and sauce out of the classic games
One of the greatest soundtracks!
I'd personally put the overall US soundtrack on C tier. I genuinely do not understand how people even compare the two.
i like how collision chaos good future emphasis the bridge part and even starts with it, but the bad future removes it entirely
I'm sorry but I'm gonna add another comment, I'm just too excited 😅
My favourite song in this beautiful ost is without a doubt, is Quartz Quadrants present
Something about this song is just.. makes me shed tears everytime, ... that middle section is just everything to me😭
I also love how this song uses the anime chords, naofumi hataya is just a genuis, literally a timeless ost and will forever be my favourite piece of music and sonic cd is the best sonic game ever..
(Well for me atleast lol)
It's fate at this point
We meet again!
Absolutely loved watching you react to what’s probably one of the best soundtracks in the Sonic Franchise…arguably. lol
My favorite out of them is Tidal Tempest Present since I can always visualize a diver getting ready to submerge himself into this incredible aquatic cavern and then exploring it with the tempo of the song.
Can’t wait to watch your reactions for the rest of the soundtrack in pt. 2!
so fun to watch. will wait for part 2 eagerly
Collision Chaos is my absolute fav from the whole OST
Same
A part 2 video with the rest of the soundtrack would be amazing! Also, please check out the "Sonic the Hedgehog - Remix" album. All the tracks are arranged and composed by Naofumi Hataya and Masafumi Ogata who are the two composers of CD's JP soundtrack. :)
great video, quartz quadrant past is so good
While all Sonic music tends to be amazing, I consider Sonic CD to be the gold standard for a Sonic soundtrack, its just SO good and I enjoy seeing ANYBODY react to it! amazing video!
If you do a part two to this, I think you should definitely cover the vocal themes and maybe even compare them to their American counterparts. You Can Do Anything is, in my opinion, the unofficial main theme of classic Sonic
This was awesome!!!
Eggman is no ordinary villain. He's a supervillain. (That's why all the bad futures have so much PRESENTATION)
Definitely do a part 2! Maybe listen to/watch the opening too :)
Hi, Emma! I just discovered your channel this weekend and I really like your videos. I'm also really into video game music and I'm so glad I found your channel. I hope you are doing well and I look forward to seeing more of your videos 🙂
I recommend checking out music from the Castlevania series, especially Symphony of the Night and the DS games. I absolutely love those games and their soundtracks
Such a good choice for a listen through! I recommend doing a US (or NA as its marked) listen through after the JP OST. I wouldn't say that one is better than the other, and I really like the variation of both OSTs and how they each utilize the level motifs.
This video got recommended to me on Sonic CD’s 31st anniversary what a coincidence 😅 Sonic CD is my all time favorite Sonic ost! It’s so good!
Not my favorite classic sonic game but its OST is perfect, especially the Japanese version
My favortie tracks from the JP version are Quartz Quadrant Present and Stardust Speedway Present. For the US version, probably Quartz Quadrant Present.
Also, Happy 20th Birthday! 😀
Lol I said it weirdly in the video, but it was my 28th bday. But thanks for humoring that I might be 20. 😂
@@battleapple I'm sorry about that. I heard very poorly. Happy 28! 🙂
I love all the bad future versions of the zones. The songs really do go hard!
Thanks for the content. I had a fun time watching your video! ^•^
Sonic CD songs gives me chills
Battleapple: realizes a game came out 2 years before she was born and feels old
Me, who was 8 when the game came out: *hip breaks in realization*
This was a really fun time! It's awesome getting to see someone from my generation (1997 here) listen to one of my favorite VGM soundtracks that I discovered through the internet myself growing up. I also love your energy and vibe that shines through even though it's a lower energy video as you're tired, and your kitties too of course! 😊
Excellent video! Sonic games have really good music consistently.
I’m so happy I got this recommended to me! Your reactions are very fun to watch and I got to have a video to watch as I ate haha. I hope you continue to react to more video game music 🙏😭
You for real should make a part 2, the rest of the songs are pretty cool, some of there are fans favorite, and also your video is very nice, for sure I will follow your work :)
I love seeing you react to Sonic music, CD has my favorite Sonic soundtrack!! I'd love to see a part two, the last two stage's music go super hard and I am curious what you think of them!!
I'm so glad so many people have been jamming to sonic cd's ost's
Love this soundtrack!! Hope you enjoy stardust speedway!!
CD ost is peak!
Sonic soundtracks always deliver. I love how dreamy, dancey, and otherworldly Sonic CD's OST is.
Amazing reaction! 🤩
My favorite present themes: Tidal Tempest / Quartz Quadrant
Good Future: Collision Chaos / Metallic Madness
Bad Future: Palmtree Panic / Metallic Madness
Past: Wacky Workbench
Part 2 for the second half of the OST, and parts 3 & 4 for the US OST (not counting the past music)
Get ready for the boss theme when you listen to it. Perfect for dance-fighting!
Orchestra hits actually were quite common in the 80s. Owner of a Lonely Heart by Yes is a well known example.
16:59
You have no idea how good it feels for someone to acknowledge that. The bass in Tidal Tempest is heavenly.
The P mixes were done in the sound chip as opposed to being fully recorded and played of the game disk directly like the rest of the soundtrack . Because the P mixes were on the ROM they were used in the American version of the game also.
Loved sonic as a little girl and I've loved it ever since
If youre strong
You can fly
You can reach the other side
Of the rainbow
Its alright
Take a chance
Cause there is no circu.stance
That you cant handle
When you use your mind
SONIC BOOM SONIC BOOM....
YOU CAN DO ANYTHING SOLOS

@@DubiousDepthsRadio Doin' good. I normally watch thos videos on a different account though, so you wouldn't recognize me. I don't know if you would regardless tbh, but that's not important.
I WANT PART 2, 3, 4, 5 TO YESTERDAY!
I bet you'll love Stardust Speedway
I really like Wacky Workbench too, specifically the P mix, and i think you'll like it too :DDD
It's my favorite game ost, great reaction video!
Forgot how much I love this ost lol. Good video.
Collision Chaos is maybe one of the biggest Sonic bangers of all time
I played and beat this game many times.
The final track believe in yourself is so 🔥
