And we utilize centralized storage folders for all of our project data and files. Literally, you can work from anywhere and with a VPN know your data is protected.
Thanks for this info. I have been wanting to start file sharing and was not happy with privacy. After your video I have signed up to Sync. Free version that is. I am sure I will upgrade soon.

While I don’t fundamentally disagree with your data privacy concerns, fully encrypted data doesn’t allow for differential/ delta sync. Dropbox and Egnyte, Amazon WorkDocs and Apple iCloud Drive (believe it or not) support delta. So, if one is working on a 75Mb file and only changes 10K of it, Sync.com, SpiderOak, Google Drive, et. al. push up the entire file, each and every time. That’s a huge bandwidth hog and time / productivity killer. Delta only sends the changes bit, but “full” versions exist for data recovery, reverting back, etc. So, unfortunately, at this point in time, there’s a trade off one needs to make: speed vs data privacy. If anyone knows of a cloud service that does both, I’m all ears.
A compromise could be to split your content on to two cloud services, one for that of more delicate content that is rarely edited and one that is more of your “work bench” where delta compatibility is valued more so because of frequent synchronization. Heck you might even get one account for free if one requires a smaller amount of space. While the obvious draw back might be to have thing located in two different clouds, in all honesty it’s not all that different than have multiple folders, keeping your sock and your t-shirts in separate drawers or not having all your money kept by the same bank (which is obviously a good safety measure) All in all, it just adds to the safety of your content
I'm thinking about Resilio Sync. I tried in the past and it's quite amazing (it uses P2P sync, so there's no server involved in transfers making it even safer that anything else (if you want to connect devices at home, all the data transfers are done withint the LAN, they don't even go out to the internet)). The only thing I'm analyzing these days is the safety thing: what if there's a fire at my home and all the computers burn down? I won't have a backup. Other than that, I have a server (Unraid) which I can also link to Resilio to keep a synchronized copy of my data. The good thing is that it's extremely much faster than any cloud solution, as it travels from other devices inside my LAN (it can even travel from several ones simultaneously being a P2P solution)
You asked how this was different--without the app, smart sync folders/files disappear from my hard drive and I don't even see them there which is annoying because I can forget them or forget where I put them... I love to be able to see everything within the original storage tree I designed--it's a lot like having aliases for being able to find stuff. This is the main reason I hadn't been using smart sync much but think I will now
We are currently working on adding search functionality in such a way that you won't have to give up your right to privacy. No ETA at this time, but it's in development.
Like your clip about sync (which i haven’t known until now) Iam bit concerned now because using Dropbox a lot and perhaps is not the best choice for me / company ... Other question: What do you think about apples sync via storage in iCloud ?! Go on with your great vlogs and best greetings from Germany Joachim
As per this link support.apple.com/en-sa/HT202303 Apple does provide end-to-end encryption for a lot of things (which is good, and on a hardware level they really are taking the right stance to protect our privacy I think), however, they do not yet provide end-to-end encryption for "file data" stored on iCloud. The iCloud terms of service confirms this. Under Section 5 (Content and Your Conduct), part C (Removal of Content) Apple states that they can pre-screen, modify and/or remove Content at any time, without prior notice. Which means they can view your data. www.apple.com/au/legal/internet-services/icloud/en/terms.html
Steve, I have been following you for years and appreciate all your videos and Podcasts. Regarding Sync, will you be making the switch from Evernote to Sync? Encryption was always something you wanted from Evernote. Are you willing to give up Evernotes search capabilities?
So glad to here that this resides in Canada for our data privacy and security. Question for you. If you share the link through say Gmail does the patriot act then allow for then information to be viewed or scanned? Since that communication is going through america servers? Thanks!
I think there is a little problem with SYNC, compared to DROPBOX. I can't select a folder and have it just be online and not take up space on my hard drive.
Damn guys, don't worry, just encrypt any important files with Rar and give it long password. It's the safest way using these cloud service if you give concern about your privacy
The Sync folder is a real folder on your computer that you can save files to and work from directly. The Sync folder is always backed up to the cloud, and synchronizes to any other computer you install Sync on. The Vault is a cloud-only storage space for archiving files. Files in the Vault do not synchronize to others computers. You can test these features out on the free Sync Starter plan.
Thanks for this review. It is just what I have been looking for. We will be using your affiliated link.... Over the years you have massively helped me find technology to use that has changed the way I do things... Evernote / 1password - you're a game changer and very much appreciated. from Dr. Nic
Thanks for another information packed video. One thing I would like to know whenever you review online file storage is how each service handles deletions. Am I being paranoid, or is it possible if I sync a file to all my devices one incorrect deletion could delete the file everywhere ?
Does Sync have a Linux app? I don't see it on their website. I'm excited about everything you've told us about Sync, but I use Linux as well as Windows and Android. Thanks!!!
We've got apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and the web. While we do not currently provide a Linux app (you can sign in via a web browser), it's something we're looking in to - but we can't make any promises at this time. Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks to sync.com for the reply! I signed up for a sync account, and I can tell I'm going to love it! But Sync won't truly replace Dropbox without a Linux app. Please make it a priority.
Great Video. The one thing I’m trying to establish is its flexibility working with Office 365 (mainly Excel editing). On the mobile versions of Office 365 there are save links to Dropbox and other cloud services, but I was unable to identify sync.com. I would like the option to mobile edit Excel files that save directly back to the Sync folders in the cloud. It may be possible, but I have yet to confirm.
i really admire your skills sir,,.can i ask you one thing about what keyword search generator or source will i search in finding the latest post for new businesses? I hope you can help me..
I use Dropbox for PDF Proofs for my clients, and some corporate environments do not allow them to access Dropbox, do you think SYNC is safer for these corporate environments to "whitelist" the url for employee access? I assume (like Dropbox) I can create a view link for clients to view (and not edit) these PDFS.
Sync provides a shared link feature similar to Dropbox links (view but not edit PDFs), and Sync links are fully encrypted. Corporate environments that block this type of sharing would definitely have to whitelist Sync.
One of the reasons employers block file services is to prevent internal documents from going out the door without their approval. Opening the security for inbound document retrieval may suffer if they don't want to do the work to allow that access.
Cool vidéo, man ! I wonder if the Dropbox Terms of Service are not constraint by the US law that says something like Governement need to be able to scan anything from any US company. So it's not legally feasible to do something else... Maybe Canada laws are enabling more privacy ? Actually, I don't know, I'm French. Haha ! Anyway, could you tell me what is you focal lenght lens and distance, please ? Because your footage is cristal clear and your head seems not distorded... Cool ! Thanks. :-)
they should also offer the OPPOSITE of what they offer - folders which you can dump onto the cloud but NOT store locally. Archive shit basically. Stuff you want to keep but never access.
The reason why I use Google drive is the syncing with the Google docs and Google sheets. Sync looks interesting but unless they brought in that feature will have to stick with drive. Btw, clicked on your link and got a free account, if I upgrade, hopefully you'll get commission
We lost the war on privacy long ago! We are now in the era of defining the terms of surrender! However 3TB for $10/month makes this a VERY inexpensive system! That's about the same as OneDrive. However, if you need MS Office more than than you need 2 additional TB of storage, it becomes a more difficult choice.
OneDrive is cheaper than Google Drive, but Google Drive and DropBox have a unique selling point. OneDrive has a an upload size limit depending on your method of upload: support.office.com/en-gb/article/fix-problems-uploading-files-on-the-onedrive-website-9afcc4a0-e344-4bc9-9c9d-59d3e802247e DropBox and Google Drive have higher limits. help.dropbox.com/installs-integrations/sync-uploads/upload-limitations support.google.com/drive/answer/37603?hl=en www.pcworld.com/article/2605912/onedrive-now-allows-files-of-up-to-10gb.html I personally do not like using the desktop apps when using a cloud service. I might not have much of a choice soon.
Saw your analysis of Sync.com. Yes, their privacy is OK. But: no search field in the webbrowser: how am I gonna find specific files? And: upload via browser (Safari in my case) is very slow compared to e.g. pCloud (which is pretty fast). And yes, I have a very fast internet connection... Suggestion: have a look at pCloud: curious what you think about that cloud service. Kind regards, Peter.
Great information. My college professor recommended your video and Sync today as we were having a side conversation about cloud storage. Sync sounds great. I'd like to use Sync. Does it have Linux support as well? That would be the show stopper for me.
Or just as surprising, Grammarly claims copyright of words written via the app. So storage is closing the gate after the text left for those like you who use Grammarly... ...
Thanks for this video. I think I'll be using your link to switch from Dropbox! Where in Canada are you (if you don't mind me asking)? I'm in Carlyle, Saskatchewan.
Then I received their follow-up twice quickly. They suggested me to delete and sign up again. It is time-consuming but really secure. I have seen in case of evernote as well.
Wow scary!!! That’s why I try to stick to Apple’s ecosystem even though services are restricted do to privacy. I try to stay away from Amazon and Google free tier . Etc..

I want to upload files from my laptop computer and have these files available for anyone to download without with jumping through a bunch of hoops. Just read the name of the file and decide yes I want that file and the person is able to download it immediately. Will sync allow this to happen? Thanks for a reply
Questions that come to mind, who are the founders of the company?, what are their expertise and backgrounds? (in other words, are they trusted ... larger online storage services are under the microscope and have huge reputations to protect which keeps them relatively honest or at least transparent), how many servers do they have across Canada (in the event of power outage/severe storm are server locations spread out across the country to ensure data does not become lost... if so, how many server locations? There are too many unanswered questions. But you do bring up an excellent point about Dropbox. I use iCloud for backup and OneDrive for easy transfer of files, but delete files after transferring between devices. I would never trust an online service to store super private information like tax documents, or any banking or financial related data. Just because a faceless, disembodied entity says they encrypt or secure our data doesn’t necessarily guarantee they actually carry out their promise in all circumstances ... talk and promises are as cheap as the paper or html document they are written on, unless backed up by actual laws or watchdog agencies or investors who keep a close eye on actual procedures and policies. I say you’re taking a gamble aligning yourself and placing your good reputation on an unproven, untested company unless you know the answers to all these questions and are 100% satisfied with the answers.
Hi there, great questions. More information on our founders and company here: www.sync.com/about/. We operate multiple data centre locations, data is replicated with automated failover, and yes, isolated power grids to protect against the type of weather events we get here in Toronto - ice storms, severe storms and low level seismic events. Our Business plans include a 99.9% or better uptime SLA. We built Sync because we felt the same way you do (we didn't want to store our super private info in the cloud either). But sometimes it's unavoidable, and that's where Sync comes in handy. Our web panel is totally open source, and we provide a totally free plan so you can test it out. Feel free to test Sync out, and you can email help@sync.com directly if you have any more questions. We'd be happy to chat.
You are so right. They can always change their conditions and you will not notice it. Goodbye privacy. It is much better to host it yourself on a NAS. Moreover, it is also much cheaper. No monthly fees. I think Steve should think carefully, because he uses almost every online service. My question to him is whether he really cares about privacy. Apparently not much. It is of course also his business model. Fortunately I am not that native. Maybe this is because I am Dutch.
@@EdwinBonthuis I think it comes down to deciding WHAT you want to secure, and what data matters less. It also pays to consider the loss of data vs. loss of privacy about that data. To protect against loss I'm currently using a couple of cloud services plus my own backup drives. I've not been that concerned about privacy so I'm still considering if I want to encrypt things before I upload them. The naked truth is that privacy only goes so far as a government's interest in your data. I'm sure that Sync is doing the best they can, but if the U.S. government really wanted a document stored on a Sync server, I have no doubt that accommodations would be made. Canada shares a security agreement with Canada so it would be hard to resist. As to your comment about NAS, I've got that on my list to consider. I was using it a few years ago and it was a pain at that time. Of course, then hacking becomes more of a problem ... as does data loss from some onsite catastrophy.

I am have a problem syncing an excel file from my work PC, which gets updated everyday, to my personal cloud Google Drive. I have this exact file in the exact spot on my personal computers, and it syncs to all my personal computers no problem, eg. what ever changes I make to the excel spreadsheet file on any of my computers, it gets updated to my cloud Google Drive, and so by refreshing the excel file on any of the personal computers, the spreadsheet updates to latest version. I did use Back up and Sync on all the computers, including my work PC. The spreadsheet file is saved to the local google drive of all the personal and work PC's, so that it syncs with all the PC's.
Main problem with apple is that it only works fine on Apple device. On Windows for instance, its trash.
Thanks!
I have no idea sounds like a question for a lawyer
I am wondering if Sync is easier to use than Dropbox? I am not very tech-savvy and I am having a hard time maneuvering in new Dropbox.
If you find Sync easier for you, then go for it. It's all about being more productive by using the tools you're most comfortable with.
Thanks for introducing me to Sync. However, can you explain the difference between sync folder and the vault?
The Sync folder is a real folder on your computer that you can save files to and work from directly. The Sync folder is always backed up to the cloud, and synchronizes to any other computer you install Sync on. The Vault is a cloud-only storage space for archiving files. Files in the Vault do not synchronize to others computers. You can test these features out on the free Sync Starter plan.
Thanks for this review. It is just what I have been looking for. We will be using your affiliated link.... Over the years you have massively helped me find technology to use that has changed the way I do things... Evernote / 1password - you're a game changer and very much appreciated. from Dr. Nic
Only one big problem I can see: no linux support
no linux support is fine for me, i don't mind being able to upload and download through a website... like dropbox.
Easy: use a virtual machine
What about Mega?
Great review Steve thank you.
Yeah, I've had that screaming voice in my ear. Password programs like LastPass are making my head scream as well. Any info on them?
@Donald Mickunas Or Bitwarden which is opensource and so powerfull and secure.
Thanks for another information packed video. One thing I would like to know whenever you review online file storage is how each service handles deletions. Am I being paranoid, or is it possible if I sync a file to all my devices one incorrect deletion could delete the file everywhere ?
Sync provides deleted file recovery - you can restore deleted files quick and easy :)
If they are blocking DB they may be blocking all sharing services, but the content would be more secure.
One of the reasons employers block file services is to prevent internal documents from going out the door without their approval. Opening the security for inbound document retrieval may suffer if they don't want to do the work to allow that access.
so even if they did hand the data over to the FBI it would just be scramble right? Because for them its encrypted as well?
Thanks Steve Great find
NOTHING is private online.
Hey bud, can we use it as a pure online storage drive and NOT SYNC with a local drive?
We lost the war on privacy long ago! We are now in the era of defining the terms of surrender!
However 3TB for $10/month makes this a VERY inexpensive system! That's about the same as OneDrive. However, if you need MS Office more than than you need 2 additional TB of storage, it becomes a more difficult choice.
ms office ? just buy local solution and noone has 2Tb of text documents, excel sheets or presentation.... in total lol
OneDrive is cheaper than Google Drive, but Google Drive and DropBox have a unique selling point.
OneDrive has a an upload size limit depending on your method of upload:
support.office.com/en-gb/article/fix-problems-uploading-files-on-the-onedrive-website-9afcc4a0-e344-4bc9-9c9d-59d3e802247e
DropBox and Google Drive have higher limits.

I personally do not like using the desktop apps when using a cloud service. I might not have much of a choice soon.
Steve, I'm using Google Docs. Sounds like I need to change?
Sync is only for storage. Google Docs is like Word, an application program.
How it works with video files? Is it good for Team for video productions?
Saw your analysis of Sync.com. Yes, their privacy is OK. But: no search field in the webbrowser: how am I gonna find specific files? And: upload via browser (Safari in my case) is very slow compared to e.g. pCloud (which is pretty fast). And yes, I have a very fast internet connection... Suggestion: have a look at pCloud: curious what you think about that cloud service. Kind regards, Peter.
Search has to be local at this point because of the encryption, but they are working on a solution. I
Ah, OK. We'll see :-). Did you have a look at pCloud? @@dottotech
Can I share files with individuals without them having an account? I likely won't need more than 100mb at any one time. My email has 25mb limit.
Great info your providing thank you !
Pay in Canadian money, but what about USA? Can we people to the south of you use the service and pay in American money?
Yes!
Great information. My college professor recommended your video and Sync today as we were having a side conversation about cloud storage. Sync sounds great. I'd like to use Sync. Does it have Linux support as well? That would be the show stopper for me.
Great video as always, thank you!!
Or just as surprising, Grammarly claims copyright of words written via the app. So storage is closing the gate after the text left for those like you who use Grammarly... ...
Unfortunately, yes, although Grammarly is an indispensable tool.
Thanks for this video. I think I'll be using your link to switch from Dropbox! Where in Canada are you (if you don't mind me asking)? I'm in Carlyle, Saskatchewan.
Not sure where Steve is located, but Sync is headquartered in Toronto ON, Canada.
Used to use sync.com before google drive and dropbox. I am struggling to login again because of higher security? Thank you.
Feel free to reach out to help@sync.com - we'd be happy to help!
Etc..
i appreciate too much your page!!
i got free version, but , is there a way to have the application folder in mac or pc hidden?
I try to get a configuration, but there is no way to hide all the information in that folder in my pc ,which is sync in tha cloud, but 2 big problems ,
1- it take space on the hard disk
2- everyone who take my pc see that folder aplication..not privacy option"
55 dislikes is all the drop box broad of directors and investors lol
Haha! How did you know?🤪
I want to upload files from my laptop computer and have these files available for anyone to download without with jumping through a bunch of hoops. Just read the name of the file and decide yes I want that file and the person is able to download it immediately. Will sync allow this to happen? Thanks for a reply
Does the service recognize when files have been updated on the local machine so you can push the updated files only to the cloud?
Can I upload Quickbooks online into Sync automatically?
Just encrypt with best class algo and save in any cloud. Thats it
Questions that come to mind, who are the founders of the company?, what are their expertise and backgrounds?

Of course, then hacking becomes more of a problem ... as does data loss from some onsite catastrophy.
how well does Sync actually sync in real time?
google drive sux compared to dropbox
What is that audio mixer to your left?
Good Morning 🌞 Steve.
Just dropped in for a Listen.
I don't know if my Husband Shares File's with anyone, but I will "dutifully" send this to Him.

Can I store videos or media using this service
I need help, I am at my wits end. No matter how many support agents I speak to at Google Drive Support, none can tell me what I am doing wrong, which is causing me stress, can you help? I am really sorry if this is confusing
On Canada (4:10): Out of curiosity, are there any countries with privacy laws more powerful than Canada's?

QUESTION: Steve, to clarify, are you using Sync for documents AND photos? Or are you using Sync simply for docs and sticking with Google Photos for your photos? Awesome videos, as always! You are my "go to" guy on "anything tech". Thanks, in advance, for your answer. When I grow up (technically), I wanna be just like you! Haha! :-)
I still use Dropbox for our video production work, but U use sync for all of my personal documents and business documents
@@dottotech are you still using Dropbox for video production? Or would you recommend something else? Looking for cloud storage with huge storage for exactly that
