Are used to shoot quite a few down in the Lake Village area of Arkansas. We used to get big numbers right before duck season and killed quite a few during the season. And it definitely is the ribeye of the sky
YES! I’m here in Central California and we NEED more tips for specks. Love hunting them but need to learn the details of it like duck hunting. Please keep posting tips on specks! Thank you!
Joel, my favorite bird also! I have shot only one in Idaho but we had made many annual trips to Alberta where they are so plentiful. I always loved the way they responded to the calls and would be so interactive with the caller. The one in Idaho was over water and all of them in Alberta where over dry fields.
I am hunting them on a swamp, northwest of Russia, close to Finnish gulf (Baltic sea) with Red Bone and decoys. This is my favorite hunting and I am really hooked.
Joel, since calling is no.1 on your list, how about an in depth video on how to call specks similar to the depth with tips that you went into on using a cut down call.
This got me thinking. I've only been hunting a few years now, but I remember as a kid in the 90s just outside of New Orleans, we used to see flock after flock of geese flying over our neighborhoods. Now that I'm in my 30s and finally hunting waterfowl in the same area, a flock of specs seems like a very rare sight! Thanks for the content you're making. It makes a world of difference for us that came late into the game and haven't had the benefit of mentors to show us the ropes!
What a great video Joel! Not sure if you had one in the works already or took my suggestion from the last video but I greatly appreciate it either way. I see a lot in southern Illinois but have yet to harvest one. Will be using these tips and tricks this season! Thanks again and good bless!
Yeah, I've had a couple speck videos on my schedule to do. I was planning to put this one out later, but I've had quite a few people ask for something in the last few weeks, so I decided to push this out out!
I love my giggle chickens!!!! I'm in northern California and there are tons of them!! But they can be super wary unless the season is closed in the conservation zone. they will come in 15 yards off the ground and 15 yards out just to tease you
Great breakdown Joel! They've peaked my curiosity since last winter but I've still yet to bag one myself. Hoping to scouting some out one of these next couple years and setup a hunt to check them off my list
You are absolutely right things have changed! I will say the only exception I would take with your top 5 is IF you have a place with an absolute, reliable, X, dry ground is where the big bangers are. It has gotten to where, in the right place, they spin like snows. Now my crew and I have to figure out how to take advantage of that consistently.......😒 A video on that strategy would be appreciated lol, we are pretty much in your back yard so all advice welcomed as we learn!
Even though we hunt thousands of acres, we mostly traffic birds. We hunt the edges and protect our birds and try not to educate the big groups. If everyone would follow this, it would help hunting for everyone. We still shoot limits most days. We have spots that we hunt often, but don’t mess up the daily routine of the birds.
@@rolandcortez8431 i was originally taking about the fast double cluck people do in competitions but since ive posted that comment so long ago ive learned it and just about nailed it.
I've shot a few up in Sasketchawan years ago. Don't seem to see many in North Dakota in the fall, but the things are lousy in the spring, when hunting spring snows.
I’ve hunted them in Alberta, Sacramento Valley and even in So Cal. You are right, they are the best eating goose. Delicious. Hunted both water and fields.
Growing up in SW Louisiana this is my favorite bird to hunt!!! I have been chasing them since I saw my first one killed in the mid to late 80's. Probably killed my 1st in 1992 and have been hooked ever since. So far I've killed them in SW and Central Louisiana and East Texas between Waller and Katy. Love hunting them in a muddy field or sheet water on a field. Currently run a Riceland in Hedge and a J. Stephens Signature Series RNT Barbelly for my speck hunting. Can't wait for November and listening to the yodels, clucks, and ground murmers.....music to my ears and soul!!!!
I hunted Specks In CT Last year, 2020. 3 Landed in our Goose Spread around noon. I shot two, and my buddy shot the third one. We were so confused about what we have done. That was a great day for both of us.
I'm sorry that I forgot to tell you I'm a big fan of you, your call, your generosity. I hope I'll hunt specs with you in your guidance someday. Thanks for making these Videos elaborately.
Joel I’d really like some info on your experiences with differences in hunting specks and snows over the various types of decoys (full bodies, floaters, socks, silos) and what has worked best for you
The numbers I have seen in West central Illinois have been growing very rapidly. Ten years ago we would see two or three bunches a year, now we have thousands of them landing in our snow goose spread
@@SurvivingDuckSeason We start seeing them in November. It really ramps up in late December, Jan and Feb is when we see the most. The pattern seems to be Mostly honkers, then honkers and white fronts, then the honkers start to move out and the snows start to filter in with more white fronts, then the white fronts filter out and we see mostly snows. timing depends on weather but the pattern stays the same.
It is really odd specs never come through my area. I am on the edge of the central flyway in ND. I am trying to shoot one this year but I have to drive 100+ miles to find them (which isn't a huge distance for some waterfowlers)
@@SurvivingDuckSeason it will be an interesting year with a lot of the pot holes dry on the east side of the state. I hope that pushes more my way. I have been seeing more snows in the last couple years maybe specks will come this way too.
Had 2 thousand of them resting on a marsh 15 miles away from me last year but was just getting back into waterfowl hunting so I didn’t even try for them. I regret that now lol
I have shot lots of specks in the Sacramento Valley of CA. We even have the rare tule goose which in some parts makes our limit 3 per hunter and then closes mid Dec. Otherwise our limit is 10 specks per hunter per day. I can blow the Canada goose call alright but still have yet to get the speck call down. I just might check out ur call recommendations.
@@SurvivingDuckSeason Come on out to West Texas and shoot some with us! Red Eye Outfitters, totally different type of country than where you’re at. I grew up around Swifton jumping snows in the rice fields off the Black River.
We are getting more and more speckle belly’s in Kansas every year, but unfortunately our limit is still only 2 we could get way higher on the list if they would bump our limit up
@@SurvivingDuckSeason really, seems like it should be way higher, we’ve got a crazy amount in Kansas, we almost always limit on specks even if we only have an average Canada hunt

Here in the Central Valley of California. My favorite waterfowl to hunt.
Same ballpark as yourself, and definitely have seen the changes you're describing.

California central valley. You're right specks are much easier on. Water. Dry ground birds are a much different
Harvested beautiful specs early season in “laguna Santiaguillo” Durango, Mexico
We get quite a few white fronted geese overwintering in Iowa now. I swear the birds know what a wildlife refuge is.
YES! I’m here in Central California and we NEED more tips for specks. Love hunting them but need to learn the details of it like duck hunting. Please keep posting tips on specks! Thank you!

The only specklebellies Ive shot were in Saskatchewan near Regina. By far the best tasting goose Ive had the pleasure of eating.
