  • Mark Bradford is an American artist from Los Angeles. Known for drawing on the urban environment, he uses what he finds around him as material for his multi-layered work. He’s been chosen to represent the United States in the Venice Biennale, perhaps the biggest commission of any artist’s career. Born in 1961, Mark spent much of his early years in the hair salon run by his mother in downtown Los Angeles.

His massive studio compound, assistants, and all the infrastructure he needs to make these enormous works - it's just great that he has what he needs to keep generating his amazing work, and not having to wait till he's had a few decades under his belt. Shaun Clark this presentation gave me a truly better understanding of abstract art. Just as Mark Bradford said of his own work, “I don’t know how to represent all of America but I can bring you into the mind of Mark.” If you have a aversion to identity expression; well of course this work will be distasteful too you, but I’m sure you’d rather see it displayed from the mind of a artist than expressed in our politics. Am I correct?

    Powerful outstanding from being pushed to the margins by a dark mass in the center of the room (the negative space of turmor) to large scale entrails throwing up of guts (psychic communal temporal purging)to that last moving image of the man walking away (our David) as commentary of a history within a history of the tension and crisis and beauty and inventiveness and resilience. Wow. The gift of the artist is to see the symbols within the context of our times that release us from ignorance. viscerally. That give us a glimpse of something as complex simple unbearable unnameable and unknowable as truth. So glad I learned about this artist today. My heart swells.

    This is not art, this is fashion with material. Has nothing to do with classical painting or drawing. But there is a lot of this stuff in the artworld. There should be two types of art, one for skill, natural talent and another for people who are able to create things out of materials. Reminds mw of those shows who give you an hour to create something with a theme in mind. Those are not true artists those are people with creativity. A true artist never does things based on what other people want, they do things for themselves even if no one would ever see it or buy it. These other people are created for commercialism .

    It's almost axiomatic that artists talk the standard "art talk - highfalutin sounding inscrutable gibberish". Perhaps they feel that by doing this it gives them a sense of bearing and gravitas. Does art have to be verbally described ?

      @loisshukes8842 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Matthew Jackson I’m an artist and I totally agree with you about the “art talk”. I HATE IT. Sadly it’s what Gallery’s, artist statement and anybody of important want to hear or else they feel you don’t know what your doing. I did opening for four years and finally just quit because I couldn’t stand all the phony bull Do I still make art. Yes. why. Because I have to.

      Many artists just don't have anything interesting or well-thought-out to say about their art practice, because it comes from some hard to locate and name source of emotions and the belief that their emotions are superbly rich and unique. This artist's story is utterly interesting and I enjoyed it tremendously. It is very important for an artist to verbalize thoughts, purpose, etc., to communicate with the audience. There is no inner reality without the language, there is no 'soul', there is no auto-reflexivity without the language. I believe that if you cannot explain what you do and how you do it - you don't know what you do. And that is also ok, many artists are driven by the emotions only. Great talk

The ridiculous artworld selecting their friends from their circle, this is not innovative it doesnt require any skill to collect trash from the streets and hang it onto a wood platform. hahahahah basically I only can consider this a trash design a type of wall paper for the ignorant s that believe this will be the biggest hit of the art market.

    There is a big I in all your work, Mark. I'm not an official critic, but from what I saw, it just looks like a Rauschenberg piece done by other guy with different problems and probably more self centered. Really cannot understand the why of if, but again, i'm not a critic. If you see it without that small context that is life is revolving, you might find that emptiness that we normally see in this type of practice. It is not the viewer that is empty, no, it's just that your language is too complex where the reality is very often quite very simple and subtle. I recommend shoemaking. Lot's of honest work in there and you'll be making something that has a real use. Good luck!
