So glad I found Ms Glazhoffer's channel. Her explanations are understandable.
From 3 yo through 12th grade I sang all the time. I have an interesting voice in that it hits multiple harmonics in both speaking and singing. It required many hours of practice to sing with others. I did enjoy my time in singing.
In speaking, I often had to make vocal recordings of reports (I became a psychiatrist). For a long time I didn't understand why the machine would "turn itself off ". I put that in quotes because the machine did turn off but technically my voice told it to turn off. The machine would hear a code in the upper harmonics (humans could not hear) and the machine obeyed. This is called Talk-Off. I had several long discussions with electronic technical support over this. Few people have this problem but the telephone industry and recording machine technical people have delt with this issue.
In singing, a special form of singing is centered around this. Paul Simon brought to the USA a group of Accapella singers that could sing 2 tones at once. I qualified to be trained to sing in this style but I didn't learn of this until I was in my 30's. Apparently this would have been my natural style. But by the time I was in my 30's I was 100 hr/week into medical care. Yep full fledged Psychiatric Physician with no time for rigorously singing practice. However, I had an explanation for my interesting voice.

It's good to hear an accapella version. As you've said a 'modern feel'. And still it is quite different when you hear it from the one who wrote it. You can perceive more the sadness of the song...an air of melancholic surrounding! ( I know everyone has different interpretation but that's how I felt with Billy).

As others have stated, Peter and Tim spent some months in the same contemporary acappella group, Ball in the House, several decades ago. Peter has continued with contemporary acappella with his own production powerhouse. Tim, for professional reasons, eventually succumbed to his Country heritage, along with Austin and Chance in Home Free. Each of these three grew up in the Deep South. It seems that collaboration with Peter over the years allows Tim an outlet for his love of contemporary acappella. This also shows up in Peters collabs with Home Free as Rob and Adam Rupp also started with contemporary accapella.

One of Billy's songs that has no drums leaving it perfect for acapella.

This sounds amazing of course, but I can't help but feel that The King's Singers should get some credit here. They sang this in 1993 with almost the exact same arrangement.

I must admit, I've been screwing up on Tims last name ... because of the way we say it, I've been typing Foust as Faust. Point#2, they should give at least OFFER Jen an audition for their group, Home Free, she's shown she can truly 'SANG' and at the least deserves a chance. Uhm, I'd title the album ... Devoted to Jen, (but I'm biased)
