Great info overall, and good input. I personally have an absolute hatred of powdered metallurgy. Sure, it is cheaper, and easier to mass produce and manufacture. However, when you look at the wear values for powdered, ANY deviation no matter how minute you experience from ideal conditions tears the crap out of them. I have a stock F150 Ecoboost. The pump was worn by 95K, and I did not red line it. Same with the damn timing chain. Many argue that auto manufacturers spend millions of dollars designing and engineering the best product. The reality is, they spend millions developing a minimum viable product that meets planned obsolescence figures, THEN spend additional millions making it cheaper. Powdered metal, IMHO as a machinist and mechanical engineer, belongs in hand tools and shit where low prices and equally short lifespans are the expectation. Not in an engine that best case takes 10 hours to swap timing chain, tensioners, guides, and the damn oil pump. When the chain goes again, probably around 125K ( will be my second time swapping due to the infamous 3.5 timing chain rattle), I will be dropping in the Boundary Stage II Assembled Oil Pump and calling it a day. $600 for a true set of gears and new pump for the next 150K miles sounds like a bargain compared to the crap I am dealing with now. I call it like it is. No manufacturer has any desire to build a car or truck to last beyond 5 years, with select few model exceptions. It is just how the American market works. Heavy industry, which is my specialty and where I lean to most for knowing the best practices, follows a much different approach to things. When downtime is costly, they do everything they can to avoid it.
not enough people are talking about this. I tried so hard to justify leaving the OPGs stock, but my car is 94k miles without slicks and that leaves me possibly hitting the limiter on accident at least once on a car that the previous owners probably bounced around the rev limiter already. - a mechanical engineer with machining experience
A good damper will reduce the harmonics, and don't blast the rev limiter. FYI the Procharger HO kit doesn't use the extended damper pulley, only the stage 2 kits.
Do you need or recommend oil pump gears if you’re running naturally aspirated with the cobra jet intake?? Because of the high rpm increase? Please respond
Good info. If you do look at the curve, even on a CJ, 7900-8000 is about where you want to be anyway. Like you said, when you hit the next gear you want it to be right back into the meat of the power band. At least on my CJ setup, most of the dyno results I see the HP dips hard after 8100, so I think that would be the most I would want my NA car going RPM wise. I do not have nor think I need oil pump gears. The day I grenade my 11 GT, I would consider it on a rebuild though. Putting a transbrake on it soon, and was considering a 2 step until now haha.
This is a great video. I actually tried to gather data in OPG failure through Google form survey and couldnt get any useful data. Seems people killing OPGs are limited to track cars either road or strip that are hitting the rev limiter, raising rev limiter or mis shifting.
I can attest to this. I have a '16 GT PP with a Roush Ford Racing supercharger, Lund tuned, Kook's headers, 6 spd, etc, etc, 625rwhp and still have the factory oil pump gears.
Hey man, holding up fine. I did a few more things to it and am now at 670rwhp with the stock oil pump gears and crankshaft sprocket. I don't bounce it off the rev limiter and it's all good.

It's not a debate for me. If someone's got the money for boost, you got money for OPG/Cam sprocket. And yes.. Not very smart to do OPG without cam sprocket.
Alex, I hope you see this comment. This is a 6 year old video, but it sounds like the exact sentence you said on any one of your recent shows. You have been dead-nuts consistent on the shit you've been saying for years. You should reference the first two minutes of this video on Sunday to prove the point.
So your basically saying you can drag race your car and beat it and as long as your not banging the rev limiter you’ll be good shifting at 8k? Wtf this coyote is amazing lol how about when I dyno the car ?
I got a tune for my Subaru that has a launch control function enabled. It just lowers the rev limit when you're below 6 mph and the clutch is pressed. I tried it once just for shits, but fuck using that long term. Your theory on breaking oil pump gears just reaffirms my caution about using that feature.

@@jasonwieber2762 Any issues with corrosion in fuel system, gummed up injectors or fuel filters? Do you use any fuel system cleaners. Or is all well...thanks
@@jasonwieber2762 Any issues with e85 causing 02 sensors to fail faster.
@@jasonwieber2762 Are your cars all dedicated e85 cars. Or do you run pump gas through them occasionally.
Why do you hate wot boxes? I’m doing a nitrous kit on my s197.
no limiter? what happens when you miss a shift and hit 10k rpm
Theres a hard coded 8200 rpm limiter.
Question, see you wearing a vmp hat ;) my 14 gt has a 2019 intake manifold. Long tubes, intake, planning on doing cams too. Not sure what they'll rev it to then. But has a vmp tune on it. No 2step. But I notice that the rev limiter is SUPER soft. It's hard to explain? When you hit it . It feels like you ram into a cloud... only hit it a couple times. But it's very linear and soft.. is this to help to save the oil Pump gears ?
I put em in when I built my engine. I wasn’t worried about it but I was already in there
Do you still feel the same about oil pump gears?
Opgs are not necessary. But good insurance.
They typically go under high axial crank loads or slamming the limiter
Hey man thanks for all the info. I’m about to get a 2019 mustang auto trans with the Hellion street sleeper turbo should I spend the extra $3,000 for the oil pump gears and half shaft? I don’t plan on doing much if any drag strip racing. Will get on it in the street
Is the MT 82 in the 2018 Mustang? If so has Ford improved it?
Alejandro parece que hablas español!
En un S550 2015 Automático botls on intake , LTH , Full exhausts, sí tocó el limitador es malo?
English:
I have a New Mustang 2015 automatic full bolts on intake , LTH, full exhausts x pipe, tune.
how bad is touch the limiter by mistake?
Michell Lopez no es malo para eso está
No crap, love your style man!
So a roots blower is better huh? :) haha thanks lol I was debating between a centrifugal or roots
Thanks .
I have the gears in my Whippled GT...Cast or powdered gears have no reason to be in a perf engine of any kind anytime.
Got mad at you over interior?? Ugh...hey man, I'm in FL now so i'll have to come by sometime
In a DJ Khaled voice "you smart"
Is it okay to shift at 8k rpm on a n/a setup with cobra jet manifold? I have a 2015 mustang gt just for curiosity
My tune revs out to 7800 rmps ... and revs out from 6800 to 7800 from 4th gear and up ... Beat a Porsche Panamera S on a hwy pull ... 85 mph to 130 mph .. I slowly pulled away and the dude mouthed WTF and shook his head. I just smiled and did not rub salt in the wound for a car that is $120K +
voice is good point came across well.
the other guy on this channel is sometime hard to catch what he is saying
It's not a debate for me. If someone's got the money for boost, you got money for OPG/Cam sprocket. And yes.. Not very smart to do OPG without cam sprocket.
Excellent Job.
Another cause for excessive harmonics is detonation. Running extreme boost and shit fuel isn't helping anything either.
that was very helpful!
Damn 8000 rpm thats pretty good with all that power
Informative af as always 👌
Not Vibration in your butt LMFAO!!
Alex, I hope you see this comment.
This is a 6 year old video, but it sounds like the exact sentence you said on any one of your recent shows. You have been dead-nuts consistent on the shit you've been saying for years.
You should reference the first two minutes of this video on Sunday to prove the point.
That's funny the guy calling him out on the saddle interior is still wrong my is 2011 and has saddle interior
Pretty sure he has different opinions now
Wait what happened? Lol
Wear a SEATBELT!!!!!
Vortech and paxton kits use the stock balancer on coyote cars procharger uses a designated drive system aka opgs killer
They are a huge waste of money
