Phone manufacturing company should add a manual key to disconnect microphone,camera & gps.
They’ll just circumvent it. IOS is pretty secure but they’ve cracked it. If you e got a smartphone you no longer have privacy. It’s that simple.
There are Linux-based smartphones that can do that. You can disable your SIM, or WiFi etc., with a switch on your phone. Unfortunately I think it's hardly likely these smartphones will become mainstream popular :/

Before Snowden, people didn't know and didn't care even if they were aware. His actions, regardless of motivation, have been a tremendous benefit to society. More people understand and care that their privacy is being eroded on a daily basis. That said, the onus is now on us to demand better from our elected officials.
Stop buying mobile phones would be a good start. There's nothing like the pressure of the wallet to change paradigms.
Most people still don't care enough to do anything. Privacy will be to our generation what the climate was to the baby boomers.

Privacy breaching can't be disguised as a nation security product by any private company it's totally baseless.
They'll probably ban private companies from producing and selling such products. But behind the scenes, every nation state with the money needed to develop these things will be recruiting and creating similar tools in the background. Pandora is out of the box and I don't see a way of getting her back in there. Governments will always say that they need the ability to backdoor tech to fight terrorism and crime. Regardless of how secure hardware and software developers work to increase security. It's whack-a-mole with no end in sight. The best we can hope for is organised crime don't get hold of these things.

BTW. do you know how much information is gathered on you in a single day by google? maybe you should look it up. PS: This software is only sold at the government level. and has to be approved. by the Israeli Gov before you can acquire it. if your Gov buys the software and misuses it. that's on Your Gov. I totally agree with Mr. Snowden “This is an industry that should not exit.” The US & the Western world always talk about “human rights!” So what are the rights of the individual in each of their respective country? If in those countries which the governments are corrupt & greedy, there will be no end to stop this kind of industry.

Israel or a single company is not the real culprit here. Companies merely create supply. For a company to engage in this particular endeavour, they must be really sure that there is a huge demand for a product like this. Ironically, burglary lessons are a real thing and they're actually far more benevolent. Teaching ordinary people about the flaws with ordinary security products and devices and how those flaws can be exploited is how those flaws get fixed. This is far worse.

Wouldnt help much especially with an advanced spyware of Pegasus. It can be installed remotely without you interacting in anyway. Eventually you would have to turn your phone on. Hardware integrated notifiers are probably the best solution. A small, dim light that HAS to turn on when the camera or microphone is on. That way software can't circumvent it. Not much can be done about other things unless we ditch phones

Definitely true. This is the kind of tech that would threaten anyone, regardless if they are friend or foe. Everyone should be aware of this and work to get others involved as well. Pegasus shouldn't exist and it needs to stop or has to be made unusable.

Almost everyone has heard of Edward Snowden but how many people have heard of NSA whistleblower Karen Stewart?
Just looked her up. She doesn't seem as much of a NSA whistleblower (in the traditional sense), as she does someone who had a workplace issue (lack of credit & being passed over for promotion) when working for the NSA.

At first i thought its no big of a deal - They have my data i know but i dont care coz im not doing anything wrong. But after watching the movie based on this and the actual dangers of such data and how it can be misused beyond our comprehension its insane.

When you finally discover the loophole, that usually means it’s too late that the damage has been done. Software unlike physical objects can be altered, repackaged, relabelled and sold again. No operating system can 101% guarantee security - ever! If one can make it another can break it.

I hope we start seeing more technological solutions to this organised spyware problem. Another commenter suggested a manual key to disconnect microphone, camera and GPS. This should be ubiquitous, like the blue light filter or airplane mode. Next we need to elect leaders who will take seriously the issue of privacy and data security.
Usually the leaders that push for "security" who mean bolstering the military are the same leaders who WANT to erode privacy and WANT to allow highest-bidder access to all of our devices.

The Pegasus episode is portentous of grave implications for not only the national security of the states , but also for conflict . It’s impact is much more sinister and far more consequential than the effects of “ransomware”as the latter targets individual corporations/institutions and the fallout from such an assault is mostly financial , but Pegasus targets heads of states , security hierarchy , and other key functionaries of states , among others , thus effectively compromising state security , with the attendant risk of conflict and war . A flood of incendiary statements and warnings of dire consequences ,and sanctions , have emanated from Western Capitals against the perpetrators of ransomware , but only a sheepish , hesitant response in the case of Pegasus . Would the NSO group and Israel would be held to account for their highly reprehensible transgression of international norms ?

Very interesting seeing this video. Recently, I done a speech about Surveillance Capitalism and mentioned Edward Snowden but never saw his face before or when he talked, stumbling across this was very surprising. Another thing I realized is that the algorithm is once again spying on me.
Will be sure to keep up on how this situation will unfold and if we fall deeper into a big brother society/dystopia or rise up against this ever-growing problem.
I admire Edward Snowden for his civil courage to whistleblow when NSA conducted illegal covert surveillance of innocent citizens. He has paid a huge personal price for doing so. Pertaining to the Pegasus software, then NSO claims it was developed with the purpose of revealing and catching criminals, pedophiles etc. Isn't that a legitimate purpose? Shouldn't the police have access to such a tool in order to catch criminals?
