- To play brushes in jazz, you've got to be able to play the swing beat. By searching online, you'll discover that there are many approaches with but you'll struggle to find a pattern that uses only lateral (side-to-side) motions.
This may seem easy at first, but it's deceptively difficult as there are many outward strokes with the right hand. However, it's these strokes that avoid brush crashes and is vital to maintaining consistent legato sounds.
Some of the clearest brush pattern illustration I’ve ever seen.
Thank you Howard!
Simple and sweet brushing pattern. Also cheers for feathering the bass drum.
Thank you so much!
You beat me to complimenting the feathering. Great video.

Wow. That is some slick brushwork brother. Great job. Makes me want to go practice!
Thanks so much brother!
I’ve been trying to play jazz and for someone who has played heavy songs or just fast songs it’s so hard to try and play a gentle and kinda slow genre 😭😭😭
@@selenarangel826 you gotta put in a lot of time to develop a new skill. Have to be patient as well
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
wow finally a short straight to the point most helpful video 🙏🏼
Thanks ☺️
I like how you used tracks for the visualization. Because that's what I always think of when I hear swing brushes. The sound of a train
Thanks so much!

Very Nice!!!! So Smooth! Question: Playing with brushes on snare drum...On/Off? Does it really matter?
Great question! Playing with snares on gives you more articulation but playing with snare off sounds much warmer. I like to play with snares off but I crank the tuning which helps with articulation! However, I play with snares on for funk and samba grooves and also for big band as it helps with projection. So many options!
Thank You Anthony!!
love snake jazz
Me drawing rr tracks on the snare head😂
Haha awesome!
what's the tune you're playing on?
It comes from Epidemic Sound: share.epidemicsound.com/2d8rp0
Yo is there a way to download this particular track with/without the drums. I would LOVE to practice this
I got this track off Epidemic Sound which I pay a yearly subscription to.
what's the name of the song
I love your videos and concept but i cannot get around it...i keep trying but i don't feel comfortable with the patterns. I can play them just fine differently but not like this 🤷♂️
Is it perhaps that you may find the outwards sweeps difficult? Because if so, then there is a reason for this...
@@LuvskiDrums Yes
@@cyberrider1765 The reason why this is hard to grasp is because it is essentially the opposite of down-strokes. You may naturally find yourself wanting to sweep inwards. I discovered that playing this way led to my brushes crashing together. It took me a solid 12 months of practicing outward sweeps before it felt natural. The reason my technique flows is 100% due to the outward strokes. If you really want to improve your brush playing, that may be the key!
@@LuvskiDrums Thank you Anthony! I get right on it! Legend
Is that Collin James?
