Anthony Stanislavski - Brush Lessons for Drummers
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 19 ธ.ค. 2013
I have been playing drums for over two decades now and have been teaching for about 18 years. My outlook on teaching has always been - if you can't find the materials that suit your teaching, then create them. I have published two books on drumming methods and have created a unique approach to playing drums with brushes. So you can expect to see tutorials on my approach, one sweep at a time 😀.

Noticed the Salt City Drums shirt. Are you an SLC drummer? Or in England?
No, I’m in Melbourne Australia. I was lucky enough to run a brush masterclass at the shop in 2022.
Surprised this is actually a thing. Creative!
Thanks
Love this I often play cha cha with brushes the songo sounds grand too as it’s a crosses between Maracas or Shekere patterns grooovy Great!!🌎🕊️🎶🍗🥁
So glad you like it! This was a fun video to record!
Great video
Thank you!
Awesome
Thanks so much!
Excellent sound and phrasing!
Thank you kindly!
This is what I am talking about! Simple and usable for a simpleton like me! Could you break down "coyote" from Joni Mitchell when the Band backed her up on the last waltz?
🚂
after playing straight ahead music for years, I am trying brushes. I am having a hard time with the minutia of a lot of the strokes you teach. Some of the more basic patterns I have found on the tube are getting me by and are enjoyable. The more complex are frustrating!
Hey I totally get that. You've got to understand though that the info I release here doesn't really go into technique. I leave that content for my online courses and one-on-one lessons. Why don't we setup a lesson a Zoom and I can help you with your playing?
@@LuvskiDrums I only have a few snare drums at the moment. I got rid of all my kits. Thinking about getting another, but I am getting old brother!
@@RemoWilliams-jg4yb you only need one surface for brushes!
@@LuvskiDrums I know. I said I was going to get into this when Levon Helm Backed Joni Mitchell on Coyote. I STILL have no idea what he is doing back there. I just need some SIMPLE patterns that can help me with most styles
dude, awesome!! clear and concise. many thanks!
You're welcome!
Que legal. Vou treinar essa levada❤
Thank you 😊
Hi Teacher What is a red pedal beater?
It’s a Cajon beater made by Schlagwerk
Really good feeling
Thanks 🙏
Brush patterns always elude me. Great video!
Yes! Thank you!
does anybody know the song?
Man, where have you been all those years?
Just doing my thing!
"This student's been studying with you for 40 years now"? Have I heard that right in your intro? If this is true, then why are you yourself clearly under 40 years old?
Haha it’s a bit ok a joke! Obviously that student is me, and I turned 40 this year
Brilliant
Thank you 😊
🗣️🔥🔥🔥
😊
Fantastic content as always! Is this in your ebook? I’ve been debating getting it for awhile now, your brush work is on fire and very easy to duplicate with the notation!
This is actually from my newest online course: www.stanislavskimusic.com/BGOD
Is this what is meant by brush drums?
Yeah, pretty much!
Hi bro great music just don’t think you need to at the other brush it sounds a bit busy when you do
But bro, that’s what I’m going for. I’m a busy man 🤪
@@LuvskiDrums😂
Nice, but do you have simpler version for us mere mortal to learn the basics of the brush framework?
I sure do! Check out my channel and look for the 30-day brush kickstart.
@@LuvskiDrums I will. I just started playing not to long ago after 35 plus years of drums. I have some of the basic patterns, but once they get a little complicated, that is where the frustration kicks in.
This video is just what I needed.
So glad you like it!
I think every modern producer has followed your instructions, as an old Jungalist, i find new stuff very copy and past of each other 🙄
Are you saying my stuff is copy and paste? If you are then please let me know other tracks that use brushes.
@LuvskiDrums not At all, renegade snares is one of my all time favourite tunes. I wish More producers would use real instruments like you 👌🏻but if you listen to the majority of drum and bass from the last 10 years, It's lost creativity, I saw a Live band do a jungle performance with goldie, It was amazing. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! Great video 🙌🏼
Glad you liked it!
inverted doubles using crossover would sound hip ngl
Absolutely! That’s actually in my book!!!
n a billion in between! great video n explanation
just a quick question: if I'm planning to get into jazz drumming to playing jazz brushes do I have to learn traditional grip? or can I use match grip
Thanks for the question. No, not at all! I have many students that play both traditional and matched. It’s really a personal preference
@@LuvskiDrums great, thanks!
Yoo what are those pick things in your hand ??
They're called brushes, they can be played on drums and comb your hair!
❤
Wow, you’re giving us that good gas, in this economy?
Haha 🤣 I sure am
Excellent...im in the process of stepping up my brush game.. i will check out your videos..this is very helpful thank you
Great to hear Steve. I'm happy to help!
@LuvskiDrums you definitely have the technique down..and I also really appreciated the Jimmy Cobb 6/8 brush patterns on "All Blues" from the One AND Only Miles Davis Kind Of Blue..Definitely one of my all time favorites..I love playing that whole album..I was sweeping with my left hand but I can really see what you mean with the stop and hook strokes..I got it now brother. Thank you..oh, and one more question.. Is the bass drum feathering all 6 quarter notes in the or are you kind of just accenting on the 1 & 4 in the measures. Thanks again for the reply and the kind words
oleo🎉
Not quite!
Have to tell you man…your videos are spot on. So clearly well explained and you can tell you’ve put a lot of thought into the “arrangement” of the video. Kudos.
Thanks so much Rob, glad you dig my vids 😊
Smooov🔥
Thanks ☺️
I’m old and my drum teacher was in his 80s. He taught me this back in the mid 1960s on his kit with calfskin heads. It never sounded as sweet on my kit at home with Mylar heads.
Animal heads are the best
love snake jazz
Purdie notes?
Sorry, I don’t understand
Nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
Hi, great vid! One question about the basic swing pattern with brushes...what do you think about doing the swing notes when the right hand brush is on the left side of the snare drum (when the hands are crossed)? If i'm not mistaken i've seen players like Jeff Hamilton have a preference for that way of swinging...Thanks in advance!
Thanks Henry. I don't subscribe to the whole "this is the only way to play a swing pattern" etc. I have a whole bunch of swing patterns that follow that formula, as well as the complete opposite. Every variation has a slight difference in sound. Eg. some tunes require a more legato/smooth sounding groove, and some need more of an articulate sound. If you're keen on finding out more about this, check out my newest online course: www.stanislavskimusic.com/BGOD
Hi, one question...what do you think about doing the swing notes when the right hand brush is on the left side of the snare drum? So the pattern would be basically the same, but as if the right hand was mirrored. If i'm not mistaken i've seen players like Jeff Hamilton have a preference for that way of swinging...Thanks in advance!
The thing that I’ve come to realize is that there is no wrong way. What’s more important is to try many variations and figure out what works for you. I will add that I play it the way I do because all my other patterns start with the right hand sweeping out on beat 1, resulting in seamless flow between patterns. That is something that I don’t see many others demonstrate.
Is your book on Amazon? Where can i get it? Much love🫶🏻
Hey Henry, it sure is, or you can support me a little more by buying directly from me: phrasingandfreedomwithbrushes.com
THANKS 🙏
Luv playing this must groove for drummers by Gadd. Once i get my brush technique down, will be awesome to play. Another great approach using brushes Anthony 👏
Awesome! Thank you!
Anthony great concept. I have the prologix. Great that they firmed up the top surface. The one shipped warps and unusable. Would be nice to make available a lefty version. I’ll firm up mine and draw the train tracks 👍
Wow just reviewed your train track vid . Now this method really makes sense 👏👍
Glad it was helpful!
i've started to get into jazz a lot more recently and i really love how the brush sounds
Amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
I take too many, so they won't say, "I don't like it, take another"..
