4:06 Sugar coated almonds are super common at Greek weddings and Baptism parties. They usually come in a baggie with the name of the couple or the baby. Some people eat them but most people I’ve met just keep them and place the baggie on a wall somewhere with other memory decor.
Pastel colored Jordan almonds were at every baby or wedding shower I was dragged to as a child, so I recognized it immediately. “Ooh pretty ones! I like it!”
Anchovy paste is a completely normal thing in Italy… In my family we have always had a tube in the fridge. It is normally used on toast, with ham and cheese, or a teaspoon melted with oil and onion for tomato sauce. A small amount spread on pizza or focaccia is also good
Pass it on idea: hangover cure Night out food Bar food Child food turned “chefy” Just a few ideas off the top of my head Obviously after Covid or with social distancing
The candied almonds were always given in a little treat bag at Algerian parties/weddings when I was younger :) I haven't gone there in 10 years so I'm not sure if they still are!
Same in Greece, they come in all sorts of different colours or have chocolate in the middle instead of an almond. I really like them! Then again I'm Greek
In Italy we use confetti (the almond treats) as a gift for big celebrations, such as weddings or religious events! They put them in small, posh bags. Many people keep them for memory, as they don’t really spoil. I wouldn’t say they are pretentious, they’re more of a traditional thing! I do think those were overpriced, as confetti made of just almond and coating are usually the least expensive ones ☺️
Ps, little curiosity; for us, when we say confetti we think of those treats. English “confetti” for us is “coriandoli”; I remember when we first learned of this difference, many of us were so confused for a second!
When I was a child my treat at the cinema was always a box of Jordan almonds. I'm not sure how my teeth survived. I find the pastel colors much more appealing. The gold ones were so pretentious!

SailorIda3 here’s the thing. The amount of money the crown gets, including security, allowances for purchasing, is dwarfed by the amount of money they bring in through tourism, merchandising and land. 95% of the land the royal family own is controlled by the government, and it claims almost the entirety of its revenue. Add to that the fact that the royals are unpaid ambassadors to other nations, living representations of our history, and hold next to no real power, there is quite literally no reason to remove them. I appreciate your point, but the fact of the matter is they’re worth far more to us financially than they cost to keep.

we eat almond dragees a lot in Greece and they are very traditional and common! Usually given as a wedding favour but also just awesome to have! we love them! I wouldn't call them pretentious (usually covered in dark chocolate and sugar)
When they cover them in metal no one should eat, they deserve being called pretentious... Or horrific..... Real ones with food coatings are excellent and everyone should try some sometime. 😊
The dragees in Catalonia ( and I guess in Spain, but I don’t remember the name in Spanish ) are called “confits” and are also typical for weddings and baptisms, but not golden, in pastel colors. Ok, I checked, in Spanish are calle “peladillas”. Maybe it is me, but they feel old fashioned. They are traditional but it is one of those traditions that feel (to me) passè. Yes! I'm not Greek, but I definitely remember them from when my little (Belgian) cousins were born. My Dutch family didn't do that when me and my siblings were born, but we have something else called beschuit met muisjes, which are basically just very cute mini dragees with aniseed inside served on bread rusk :)
Dragées can be found on tables, as a gift for guests during weddings in France. It’s traditionnal. They can be made of almond or chocolate (my personnal favorite 😇).
Well, that was an interesting tidbit near the end there, when did Ben cook for the Queen? That sounds amazing. Also, now you have us all curious to what Ben's gentlemen's relish looks and tastes like.

I instantly knew what the sugared almonds were... to be fair, one of my friends as a child was very posh! Her mum always had a little bowl of them out on a coffee table.

As soon as I saw the almond shape I was screaming Jordan Almonds at the screen! They are really popular in the US (at least among some Italians in the US) as party favors! Especially for celebrating things like Weddings, baptisms, and first birthdays!
Oh I do like a sugared almond/dragee. As children they were a great Christmas treat and in later life I've been known to keep a candy bowl made of uranium glass on my desk or on the dinner table as a palate cleanser after a meal with coffee. Glacé fruits fruits was another festive treat, both to give and recieve. Was quite fun making them, particularly enjoyed marron glacé and my all-time favourite candied angelica. Oh talking of anchovies and candied things, have you tried Japanese Tazukuri/Candied Sardines/anchovies? Interesting once you get your head and tastebuds round them.
Pink, white, or blue coated almonds are popular in my country. They are usually given out at occasions. They are usually given out with tiny little gifts when babies are born.
Ive been on a binge of SORTED videos for a few days now and I think i've fallen in love with Ben...It could be the lockdown talking but hes my dream man
The universe wanted me to see this. I was walking in the rain, the notification popped up and the rain clicked it for me😂😂 Now I have to watch the video twice..
Currently visiting London and went to 'Where the Pancakes are' for breakfast and also Crosstown doughnuts, both recommended by you guys. And both utterly delicious! The pancakes royale with streaky bacon and hollendaise is amazing. Visited Borough Market too and loved every minute. Thanks for the recommendations!
This was a good one. I can see using the anchovy relish in the duxelles for a beef Wellington and it taking it even higher in flavor! Ben, please make that! (I am a veggie, so I can't!) Great ep. I don't think any of those were pretentious, other than buying a fancier version of something with the "tax" as Jamie said, of Fortnum and Mason. I'd use those clementines for baking and on a cheese board. The Jordan Almonds as wedding favors or fancy treats in a gift basket. The flatbread was not pretentious at all and the relish was just a company playing off the OG to make it seem fancier than it is. Keep these coming, I love them!
Quinoline yellow is made from quinaldine which is derived from coal tar, and phthalic anhydride which is derived from naphthalene which is derived from coal tar.
Where I am from (Belgium) little bags of dragées were given to the guests at baptism of a baby. They don't perish so they were often kept as souvenir from the event.
I grew up on the west coast of the states. I’m also Asian so anything aquatic I would happily eat. Salmon. Shrimp. Squid. Lobster. Crab. Mussels. Clams. Urchin. 🍽 I had a lot of friends from different cultures growing up. I ate a lot of different foods 💕

You've been dying for years to give us your gentleman's relish - Jamie
Umm..... Ben, what?
exactly bro why are these dudes always being sus
As soon as I saw the almond shape I was screaming Jordan Almonds at the screen! They are really popular in the US (at least among some Italians in the US) as party favors! Especially for celebrating things like Weddings, baptisms, and first birthdays!
"mother-in-laws get a bad rep, and i've got a nice one - they feel rustic" lmao
Oh I do like a sugared almond/dragee. As children they were a great Christmas treat and in later life I've been known to keep a candy bowl made of uranium glass on my desk or on the dinner table as a palate cleanser after a meal with coffee.
Glacé fruits fruits was another festive treat, both to give and recieve. Was quite fun making them, particularly enjoyed marron glacé and my all-time favourite candied angelica.
Oh talking of anchovies and candied things, have you tried Japanese Tazukuri/Candied Sardines/anchovies? Interesting once you get your head and tastebuds round them.
when did Ben cook for THE QUEEN???!
I love the feeling of Christmas that I get in the beginning with the music and the glittery background :D Even in summer (fall)
My favorite character is all of them. (But really it's Curry)
Pink, white, or blue coated almonds are popular in my country. They are usually given out at occasions. They are usually given out with tiny little gifts when babies are born.
Lol so Gentleman's Relish is a thing. I thought it was just Ben making immuendos again!
Thanks for the laughs and great content! Needed it today. 🙃
Ive been on a binge of SORTED videos for a few days now and I think i've fallen in love with Ben...It could be the lockdown talking but hes my dream man
We have dragées in France at big events like weddings and christenings to celebrate, no one actually eats them we just keep them forever 😂
These kinds of videos - where you judge or rate a series of items - are by far some of your best
Have the boys never encountered Jordan almonds before ?
Oh, sorry: “gold almond dragées”
I AM COMMENTING TO SHOW MY SUPPORT...
also golden nuts lol.
Thanks for the recommendations!
i don’t think i’ve used the word “git” in a while but jamie might’ve inspired me to add it back to my vocab
That meat, cheese, olive, fruit board looks great.
wtf is "anti-pastey"? do you mean anti-pasta/anti-pasto?
"Why is it called gentlemen's relish when it's probably not pleasant for all genders" -Mike, what a quote to remember
The way he fumbled through that sentence was just beautiful, poor guy is genuinely confused by what he's just eaten
'Pebbles at the bottom of a fish tank'
Way to put it Mike!
LOLLLL
Quinoline yellow is made from quinaldine which is derived from coal tar, and phthalic anhydride which is derived from naphthalene which is derived from coal tar.
“Today: 2 normals. Jaime, who likes big flavors (😁) and Mike, the pallet of a 10-year-old (🙂😟😒😒)“ 0:31 😂
Where I am from (Belgium) little bags of dragées were given to the guests at baptism of a baby.
They don't perish so they were often kept as souvenir from the event.
As a former 10 year old, i can definitely say i loved lobster when we could afford it.
Brilliant 😂
I preferred snow crab, and when I grew up I stopped liking seafood.
I have always thought crab was better than lobster. Not that lobster is bad.
Pretentious or not? Yes.
Is it just me or do they get more and more British with every video? It’s so adorable! I love it!
