Years ago I did some extensive testing with my neighbourhood crows (hooded crows in Berlin). With nuts their preference is (everything without shell, from best to worst): cashews, then nothing for a long time, walnuts and Brazil nuts, almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts. I did not include pistachio in the test (because they are quite expensive and it is quite some work to take them all out of the shell so I rarely offer them) but they are closer to the top of the list.
My spoilt brats have stopped taking peanuts from me a long time ago. Exception: peanuts in their shell (because they are so suitable for storage I guess; quite similar they get much more excited with walnuts in shell; but if I just offer walnuts without shell I get some snarky looks.
During the breeding season (when I get visited by the breeding adult crows only because they wage war against each other on my balcony then and this would be very very bad for the young crows...) the adult crows clearly prefer meat (and even fish fingers/sticks) over cashews. Probably because they know they must not feed nuts to the nestlings (might kill them). But during winter the majority of my crows prefers cashews even over meat (even fried minced meat). I didn't try mice against cashews, though 😆
In theory superworms and house crickets are the best food for them (i.e. the nestlings) during breeding season. But it is a lot of effort to feed the superworms or insects correctly before feeding them to the crows. And the crows are not particularly fond of this high-maintenance food. And I get it. Crows love lumps of food. The insects weigh nearly nothing. The whole box of crickets may be as much (or as little) as a single piece of goulash... So I make sure that they get a lot of meat, fish, and egg yolk (quantity is probably even more important for the nestlings than quality). Being fed by me the crows do not have to waste time for looking for food. So they have the rest of the day to find some insects on their own. And all "my" fledgelings look great. No feather damage. And some of them look like an adult crow half a year later. A daily meat-fish-egg-only diet makes it possible... (after several years of such a diet my two killer crows are such chunks that they even take on adult cats together; not teasing or harassing the cats - threatening them, successfully!!) 😆🖤 I love them.

Peanuts aren't really a nut, I believe they are a bean and they aren't native to North America. Peanuts are grown from bushes, and cashews from trees. I doubt crows have had them in their diet much in history so the results aren't surprising to me.

Crows like all birds really like peanut butter in my experience, more so than just peanuts. Just make sure you check the ingredients, and be aware of the food standards in your country, specifically be wary of aflatoxin. Also make sure the salt concentration isn't too high, depending on the amount you feed them. If it's a maximum of 1.0 % salt it should be fine unless they eat a large amount of it.

@@CarlosSamuel-ms9eeYou will NEVER see anything is print that says to feed birds salt. There is NO reference for YOUR ill advice. Salt exists in everything, they will get salt from UNsalted foods. "Salted" means MORE salt, not that there was no salt content to begin with. You feed them crumbled plain cake or cookies, even plain bread, all contains salt. You're being a smart-aleck. Challenging me when you don't have a sensible leg to stand on. Admitting you're WRONG would make you less of a jerk. You can find bird diets online from reputable sources. Go fish and learn something on the way. You pulled your 1% out of your hat, to cover your laziness. You'll give them salted peanut butter if on sale, instead of getting the unsalted. Your invented 1% is the amount of sin you give permission. What is really disgusting is your cunning, amateur and stupid. Better you feed the birds NOTHING until you GROW UP. And learn to read. Seriously I doubt you even feed the birds. You're just trolling trying to post the last word to taint good advice.

  • @ConnieWojahn

The crows in my area of suburbia don't care much for peanuts in or out of the shell. I've not tried cashews as those are really expensive and I eat the few I do treat myself to, so sorry crows. They get meat trimmings. They especially like fat of any kind. I render it down to just above crunchy and soak stale bread in the oil to make a suet like mush which they also love. I'm guessing the crows in this video prefer cashews because, as intelligent birds, they know or sense cashews are nuts and peanuts are legumes and not true nuts. Nuts have more oils and protein.

I am very surprised by this. Cashews are not a true nut and their nutritional makeup is quite different from what many animals require. Animals have a sense of what they need most of the time. In my area where I feed wild birds and squirrels, they generally ignore cashews unless they are very hungry in the dead of winter.
