  • A ride in the rear of a 1996 NFI - New Flyer Industries Low Floor model D40LF with a very loud and vocal rear M.A.N. axle, Detroit Diesel Series 50 4 Cylinder 4 stroke diesel engine and the Allison World B400R transmission.

    Yeah, them Axles is DONE!!!!! I love it when they are this loud!

    this bus still gives me nostalgia when I rode them as a kid... sad to see them retiring out of most bus agencies :(

    Actually, yes they are M.A.N. axles. The NFI Low Floors were available with either the MAN or the Merritor axles. All of CT's NFI Low Floors were all delivered with the MAN axles. If you check the Wiki pages on the cptdb.ca website, you will also find that info posted there as well.

    Some of North County Transit’s D40s have axels that are this loud. They still run as of 2023 and are 23 years young

    CT's 2005+ D40LF's sound different than their earlier ones as well. You can also tell the difference between a Merritor axle and an MAN axle by looking at the hubs on them on each bus. I am not exactly sure when, but MAN started offering more than one model of axle for the NFI Low Floors. One was considered the 11 ton model as seen on older models and the other was the 13 ton model seen and hear on many units built 2005+.
