    What I love about swimming on the South Coast is that when we get a cold clear spell with northerly winds, it's so beautifully sheltered. Even when the air temperature's near freezing, there's still some warmth from the sunshine for when you get out.
    A couple of tips - don't go in if you're feeling chilly in the first place, try a hearty walk / jogup and down the shingle for ten minutes, build up a bit of extra body heat. Also recommend a pocket charcoal handwarmer, get some life back into your hands so that they actually function.
    Have fun !

      +Johnny Hamster thanks for the tips. I love the hand warmer one. I try to make sure I have nothing fiddly to put on when I get out. In fact, I do sometime take slippers with hard soles to put on for the drive home rather than deal with shoes and socks. The point about the northerlies is so true too. Love a cheeky swim when no one else understands why!

    19-20* in the water 🤯we’re lucky to get that in air temperature 😂 (NE England) 👍👍

    I swim in Michigan. I can relate to swimming while it snows, and seeing a kingfisher as well. Most of my wild swimming is in inland lakes. However, I manage to swim in Lake Superior and Michigan now and then. That's always a bonus!

    • @EverydayAthleteRach
      @EverydayAthleteRach  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! Michigan? That must be getting chilly now Don! Kingfishers are a real colourful treat, aren't they? Swimming in the lakes could be quite lumpy, a bit like swimming in the sea? Thanks for watching my videos 🏊😄

      @@EverydayAthleteRach water temperature lately has been about 4C. Air temp -2C today.
      The Great Lakes can be every bits as savage as the oceans. However, the wave action is different. I'm not an expert on the matter, but it seems to be a 3 to 1 ratio on wave frequency compared to the ocean. The oceans, I believe, have a deeper, more visceral energy to them. Where the Great Lakes can rip you apart due to a higher frequency. Two 600-800 ft freighters have been lost in my lifetime due to weather. Although, that's been a long time ago.
      If you ever visit Michigan, I suggest September to October. Beach swimming is best in July and August. I love this place.

    This is my first year of outdoor swimming, this has really motivated me to keep going as it gets colder. Thank you!

      Good luck with it, I'm happy I managed to help motivate you in some small way. I'm sure you'll enjoy it so long as you remember it is the experience that counts, not the length of time in the water as the temperature drops off x

    West devon - Dartmoor, maybe a little at bude or exmouth, dawlish. I’m an hour from every beach so prob more chilly rivers in the winter to stay close to home.
    Welcome to join me and my merry band one day. We start with a what’s app group of 4 and now there are 24 of us. Not all are planning all year but a few of us are. 🙏🏻

    I'm so excited for winter dipping, this'll be my first one, do share clips of you in the snow etc! I have an ambition to break some ice before dipping, have you done that/any tips?!

    • @EverydayAthleteRach
      @EverydayAthleteRach  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't broken ice yet, but if there's some to break, you can be sure I'll film myself doing it and dipping! Good luck with the first winter swim season, you'll have a ball. Just remember quality of experience, not length of swim that is important

    thank you so much for all the helpful videos!! I just have a question about the sugary snacks after a cold swim... would this be ok if you are diabetic or are there any alternatives to sugary snacks that are just as useful? also, I wondered if you could do a video about how to get changed and dry after a swim in bad weather ie rain and snow.... thanks again,

    • @EverydayAthleteRach
      @EverydayAthleteRach  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jill, I have a video about how to get changed in a changing robe which was shot on a really windy day: the dark art of getting changed in a changing robe th-cam.com/video/h514Dv1GRxU/w-d-xo.html The key is to get out of the wind and change behind something, or sling on a changing robe, dump your wet swimmers and drive home naked underneath (that is the absolute quickest).
      I don't know what the advice would be for feeding as a diabetic, but it maybe something I could take a look into.. 🏊😃

    You mention having a car to park. I do not have a car. I bike or run to where I swim. There is no place to pop into to block wind and warm up. Can you recommend advice from someone who does not have a car? Or how you have modified your routine when you could not rely on having the car nearby.

    • @EverydayAthleteRach
      @EverydayAthleteRach  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ira I only speak from my own experience. I would suggest to dry to stand behind something to block any wind. I always pick my swim based on where or how I will be able to get changed out of the elements. The same can be applied no matter how you arrive at the swim.

    • @IraGer
      @IraGer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EverydayAthleteRach That's reasonable. We have challenges in this area we use. Its an NYC Park so can't erect permanent structures. Typical winds and available trees for hanging a tarp make the tarp a non-starter. I have a tent so I'll be scoping out the area to see if the desired footprint exists. Thanks for the the reminder concept.

    Is it possible to put a go pro or similar on a float and tow it behind you whilst swimming because it just looks like you are talking with the sea behind you without actually doing anything.

    Hi Rach, I spoke to you earlier this summer, when I asked you about swimming with a chronic health condition(adrenal insufficiency), and also about sourcing plus size gear.. well I’ve carried on swimming and I feel fantastic!! I am swimming in zone 3 heat tech socks and gloves. A long sleeve rash vest from mountain warehouse, and their thermal running tights, plus a hat.. I think I will be able to swim now with just this kit all winter.
    Mountain warehousegoes up to a size 28, which is so rare for outdoor swim gear! I did try their wetsuits but they were way too hard clunky, to get on and off! 😂
    After my swim. I am putting on m and s heatgen plus tops amd leggings.. they are amazing thermals! I did treat myself to a usbhand warmer, from life systems, for £20 which is brilliant. And finally a flask of hot tea, is essential.. thank you for all your videos.. I couldn’t have done this without you!

    • @EverydayAthleteRach
      @EverydayAthleteRach  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeehaa! I'm thrilled you managed to find some gear to swim in - brilliant that Mountain Warehouse could provide. Wetsuits can be a bit of a faff to get off - easiest way is to peel it off in the water - comes off like a banana skin!
      You sound like you are well sorted with the thermals too. It's great to feel your enthusiasm! Enjoy the water!

      @@EverydayAthleteRach aww thank you! Mountain. Warehouse goes up to a size 28 in some things, so great for curvy swimmers .. I don’t think I would like to try a full wetsuit.. too claustrophobic, I think 2 pieces are better for me!
