    I swim in the River Dee, Aberdeen and I stay long enough for the friendly seal to come and find me. We have a little chat at the surface and swim back downstream together side by side. Makes me smile for the rest of the day.

    'What you can get out of an activity and how you feel when you're doing it' Perfect sentiment, just beautifully put. Imagine the impact we could have on peoples mental health if coaches and parents understood that this is the real value of sport.

      I get the feeling that 2020 may be the start of the door opening on that understanding. I really hope so. I want everyone to enjoy their outdoor time in whatever capacity they can 🏊😄

      Step by step, it gradually comes with doing.
      I started in March with up to 3 minutes daily, bc.they shut down my swimming pools. Daily swimming!
      From 22th of April on I stayed already 20min, then started real crawling since beg. of may. Then the warm summer came...
      Then the autumn came:
      I stayed 20min. inside the water till the end of November (8,3-7 degree)!
      with 5,8 degree I stayed 8-9 min. , now we went up to 7 degrees. e.g., I stayed 15min. today, hard crawling.
      It works, and one is getting used more and more. Ppl. on the shore say: This is not possible, is it?" when they see me.
      I personally think:"it is not believable how far away from nature they (in part: we) all went :-))
      But a lot of ppl that see (only) me come into thinking. They just see that it is functioning!
      I do a lot of breathing before I enter the water. This is probable the best advice.
      And, crawling or not crawling, I personally breath a lot while being in the water (which not everybody finds healthy!)
      The longer I (one) stays in the cold water, the more one is starting to freeze afterwards.
      The good news is: my freezing becomes less and lesser as a matter of getting used to, while the water temperature and the air temp. successively getting colder :.-))

      Hi Rachel, what a lovely comment, thanks for taking the time. I do get some kit sent, and a few quid from the adverts which run, but mostly I do it to encourage people to make sensible decisions and have fun outdoors. I think we can be a bit stunted in our decision-making nowadays and we can lack confidence in our ability to assess a situation to decide if it's ok or not. I'd like to help people to grow their experience and knowledge to have a fun time whilst understanding and mitigating the risks. Maybe I should do a video on post-swim cakes, and see if a cake comapny will sponsor it!! I wonder if any are located next to water? My mind if whirling with possibilities!

I loved all the l’il extras like the seagull painting, all those cute little beach huts, your new haircut, the textured gray sky overhanging the glorious green water and... well... everything. My biggest safety challenge at the moment is, of course, the rapidly dropping Canadian pre-winter termps, and the large male grizzly bear that is hanging around the lake. Wowee Mary, I can't believe you get in whilst being stalked by a bear - you are fierce! I've only swum in snow once, mainly because it's a fairly rare occurrence on the South Coast of the UK, but it was mesmerising. With the dropping temps, will your lake freeze over completely? 🐻🏊🌨❄😄

    • @marycharlebois6627
      @marycharlebois6627 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EverydayAthleteRach Yes, Rachel... sadly my lakes will freeze over from Nov - April, and there will be no wild swimming for me during those 6 months. Sometimes freeze-up can be as late as December... but it is inevitable. 💦 These are my giant tears 💦. As for the grizzly bear, I try to be extremely “Bear Aware” but I don’t let potential wildlife encounters prevent me from being active in the wilderness. One just has to be cautious... soon the bears will be going into their winter hibernation. Hope you have a fun swim planned for this weekend.

    Our community pool heater stopped working so pool water has been at 10 degrees. Jacuzzi temp is at 18. Outside temp is 21 at 1pm. My mother (who’s 85) and I would do 10 min swim arm exercise in jacuzzi followed by 10 min swim leg exercise in the pool. We do this set 3 rounds to make an hour. By 2nd round the pool water would be a bit easier to bear. As refreshing as cold water dip can be, we hope the management can get heater fixed asap :)

    Yep, loved your video, all advice practical. I am ‘into it’ now about 4x weeks, swimming in sea (Near Edinburgh) about 2-3x per week. Only thing you didn’t mention here is currents. Where I swim there are currents which I noticed working against me in different directions. Later after consulting a Tide app, I’ve been able to learn which way the current will be flowing at a certain time, and I’ll be using that to knowledge to swim more safely. Even though it’s Baltic cold, I still have not experienced the Euphoria than some swimmers speak of, though I always feel I ‘accomplished something’, which is great. I do enjoy the fact that I am alone, no disturbances, and I can relax in a strange way in nature’s womb. Hope to learn how to swim properly in time. I really appreciate the ‘grumble fumble advice’, very clever. Will memorise that. I’ll check out you other vids. New sub here. Thx Rachel.

It's the ultimate free spirit outdoor experience with room for whatever people want to do. Totally agree with Rachel not specifying temps & times here.
    But I do recommend keeping a record of your own personal times & temps for safety purposes.
    For example, when the water is ‘cold’ I find it difficult to tell the difference between 12C and 14C. I know I can safely swim in 14C for about 45mins bur recently after a weather event the sea temp dropped abruptly to 12C and only my watch told me this. Therefore, instead of pushing myself to stay in 45 mins I decided to exit at 30 mins just in case. That was a good decision as it turned out.
    Finally, I recommend having a flask of warm drink and sipping that almost immediately after getting out - I do this whilst dressing. I find this hugely reduces my after-drop and speeds up my recovery time when back in land. But you need to start drinking it quickly after existing the water not wait 15-20 mins.

    • @EverydayAthleteRach
      @EverydayAthleteRach  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some good tips in there. I tend to get dressed a super speed and have my drink after that. My watch keeps a log of the temperatures and timings, so I can see it afterwards, but I tend not to look during the swim, although it is and interesting point. Enjoy the water :)

    I fell in the river in the middle of Winter, this is the cold report... (Note bulky clothes hinder swimming massively and drag you down and pockets are pockets full of water!) First arms and legs went cold, then quickly after that intestines went cold. Then hyperventilation started and that adds warmth and halts the spread of cold for a couple of minutes. Then the chest starts to go cold. After that... I wasn't waiting around to find out! So it happens in stages with plenty of warning.

      The biggest risk in the first few minutes is that of a heart attack due to everything that's going on as you suddely enter the water and your heart rate rises, proper breathing is difficult and panic.

    Hi Rach,
    Thanks again for this video! As usual, great and practical video.
    I was wondering what to do with the face - I have been swimming these last few months twice every week but this week, the water just 0.5 degrees lower than last week (11.7 C), I could not keep my face down to do front crawl. The cheeks were freezing and not getting better with time. What should I have done... keep at it longer? acclimatize slower - how do you acclimatize the face? What would you recommend? Thanks!

      I try to do a bit of front crawl on a swim, but it if hurts I stop. Sometimes, especially if the outside temp is cold and there's any wind it is just unpleasant. Don't beat yourself up about it. I wear a neoprene hat, silicone hat and ear plugs to help combat the cold, but it doesn't always work. So I just swim breast stroke and enjoy the moment instead. 🏊❄☕🍫😄

    Hi Rachel, thanks for the video. I've been swimming in the Thames for 2 years now, almost every day. I first used a wet suit but now I'm going without it even when the water is at 3 degrees (right now is at 11). I feel addicted to cold water! Any tips for how long to stay without protection when it's this cold? Thanks and take care!

    • @EverydayAthleteRach
      @EverydayAthleteRach  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi David, following the expert advice of both Dr Heather Massey and Prof Mike Tipton, in the winter (sub 10 degrees) I stay in a max of 10 minutes to avoid getting too cold and not realising. Interestingly, how we feel is a very poor indicator of how our core temperature, so timing is a safer method.

    What watch/ functions/brands of watch would you recommend for temp reading etc.
    I would want for breaststroke counting.
    Some suggestions would be appreciated and thanks for the tips today on temp / distance / and signs to look out for in your body

    • @EverydayAthleteRach
      @EverydayAthleteRach  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use a Garmin Fenix 5s but none of the watches are any good for breaststroke. If you want to record distance use a phone app and put your phone on the top of the towfloat or same with a watch. Both need a signal direct to the sky and as arms don’t leave the water in breast stroke that doesn’t happen. You can force it by getting a signal before starting to swim and every so often putting your wrist above the water and watching the numbers climb. I do this on every bend if I’m swimming down a river and want to know how far.

    Thanks for the advice. So far I've always started swimming straightaway to keep moving, but I will try and stop to check my breath before swimming. Especially now; today is the closest I've come to an armpit burn! 😂

    • @EverydayAthleteRach
      @EverydayAthleteRach  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Armpit burn is a right of passage! I just like to let my body understand what I'm getting us (my mind and my body) into. I love a little bob about taking in the scenery and the wildlife, it's so serene. Where in the world have you been swimming to nearly get armpit burn? 🏊😄

      @ValGayes 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EverydayAthleteRach I swim in Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex, just down the coast from you... I can't 100% be sure it was armpit burn; maybe it's still too "warm" for that. But I did notice a new sensation on the side of my boob. It wasn't painful, not massively pleasant either; just interesting! 😂

    Thank you. I have only recently started swimming and n the sea and I found this very helpful. I am interested in your tow float, does that keep everything inside dry?

    • @EverydayAthleteRach
      @EverydayAthleteRach  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Welcome along. My tow float does keep everything dry inside it, but I always put my car key and phone inside separate waterproof mobile phone pouches inside the tow float just to be sure. Things get wet inside if you don’t do it up properly (squeezing out the air from the dry area, then rolling the top down tightly and neatly at least 3 times) or when you open it and look inside or out your wet hands in it after a swim.

    Hiphip hooray. Rachel I love your TH-cam's. I am Debbie, I swim every day alone. Weather like London's here in USA. You inspire me so. I don't feel alone & crazy. Just how you talk about the swims, I know we share same passion. I am looking for booties gloves cap. Lomo gloves sold out. What gloves & socks are best for 1-2 hour cold lake & saltwater swims? To wear w/ shorty not long wetsuit. Or swim pants ? Tops? Any you recommend? Instead of wetsuit? Been swimming in lakes, just a shorty & cap but need more. did 55 minutes today. Thanks for your spirit guidance & inspiration

      Hi Deborah, so lovely to hear from you. When I wanted Lomo gloves they'd sold out, but the restocked pretty quickly. I just went on their email alert for the new stock. If you can't wait, here are some tips for choosing a pair because not all neoprene gloves work very well without a wetsuit over the cuffs: th-cam.com/video/ikBhN9nCVno/w-d-xo.html The best ones I have used so far are Lomo, but I have only tried a few makes. If I'm swimming for a long time, I wear my wetsuit in winter, but even in the colder temps gloves, booties and a neoprene hat do it for me. I haven't tried tops or leggings and I don't think shortie wetsuits are made wit swimming in mind and could be too buoyant. There are a few makes which do long wetsuits but without arms.. Hope you can fins something which works for you. Enjoy the swimming 🏊😄
