    7:50 Also worth noting, Gen 1 A.I. for some reason only registers a Pokémon's Primary type, not its secondary. It doesn't happen 100% of the time, but probably around 75%ish

    • @shanoc5902
      @shanoc5902 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      It's actually a bit more complicated. It's less about the primary type and more about the first result on the in-built type chart it registers. It sees that Poison is super effective to grass before it sees that poison resists poison so the AI believes that poison is super-effective. Whether the typing it 'sees' is the primary or secondary is irrelevant, as once it finds a specific result of it's typing against either of yours it reports that. A Poison/grass pokemon would get the same results, you can find lists about the typing priority it checks. This is also the same super-effective checking method is also shared by the text-box so if the game says something is super-effective the AI thinks it's super-effective regardless as to if that's the truth or not!

    • @mikecabral2420
      @mikecabral2420 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Seriously? I knew the text was glitched so it only registers in one type when it says whether it's super effective or not but the damage is supposed to be accurate. When you see how much of a buggy mess gen 1 is, it is kinda incredible how popular it was and still is.

      My understanding was that "Good" AI suffered from the same problem as the super/not very effect text. If a dual-typing has one type that's weak and one type that's resistant, then there's an internal priority order that determines whether the AI will treat the Pokemon as though it's weak or resistant corresponding to whether the text displayed would be not very effective or super effective respectively. The AI will work fine as long as one type is neutral or both types are the same kind of effectiveness, it just has issues with a dual-typing that is overall neutral because of one type being weak and the other type being resistant.

  • @dundee6402
    @dundee6402 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    7:47 That's actually a big oversight of the gen 1 games. Enemy Pokemon are programmed to prioritise super effective moves, but don't take into account double types (only the first is considered) and don't take into account either if the move does damage. So basically they use PoisonPowder on Oddish because poison moves are effective on grass types, even if Oddish is part poison too and is immune to that move. You can even take advantage of this bug by having a poison type during the elite 4 battles, Lorelei's Dewgong and Lance's Dragonite will keep spamming Rest and Barrier respectively as a result.

    • @TheWrathAbove
      @TheWrathAbove 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's worth noting that this is only a quirk of the "Smart AI" in gen 1. Trainers such as Bruno and Agatha don't have "Smart AI" and just pick random moves.

      That's how Twitch managed to beat Lance's Dragonite with an underleveled Venomoth. Because the yutz kept spamming Barrier and Agility, neither of which do any damage at all.

  • @TogashiJack
    @TogashiJack 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Gen 1 AI sees that you're part Grass type, knows that Poison is super effective against grass and opts for Poison type moves. In this case, using Poison Powder despite not being applicable to a Grass/Poison type. It's the same reason why you can get some trainers into a loop of only using Agility against a Poison type

    I feel like Agatha would have been a lot easier if you'd replaced acid with mimic and then copied dream eater. You already had sleep powder so a powerful psychic attack would have ripped through her whole team.

    • @FireFog44
      @FireFog44 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@CyberchaoX Acid is only 20 base power, so Oddish needs a lot more turns to KO anything with it. It may not have recoil, but risking enemy attacks is usually worse. Realistically, only the champion is a threat since Oddish has a really good matchup against all of the E4 with the moveset of sleep powder, petal dance, mimic and double edge.
      Lorelei: Petal Dance to one-shot Dewgong and Cloyster then mimic Slowbro's amnesia and max out Oddish's special while also getting Badge Boost Glitch (BBG) boosts to speed, attack, and defense, then sweep Slowbro, Jynx, and Lapras with petal dance. Lorelei's good AI means Slowbro will only ever use amnesia so it's completely free and the boosts to speed and special means Oddish should out speed and one-shot the last three. The only issues here are confusion hax and one-shotting Slowbro with a three-turn PD, otherwise there's nothing she can do. Even if the worst happens, Jynx and Lapras aren't too hard to take out with sleep powder anyway.
      Bruno: He's Bruno. No strategy necessary.
      Agatha: What I said in my original comment. Sleep powder and dream eater is a perfect combo to take out her entire team. The issues here are getting out-sped, Agatha swapping Gengar before you mimic dream eater, and sleep powder missing. Unfortunately Agatha will always be the least consistent member of the E4 since Oddish just doesn't have the stats or moves to make her fight better.
      Lance: Because of his good AI, the only Pokemon he has that will ever attack Oddish/any poison or fighting type are Gyarados and Aerodactyl. Gyarados. knows hydro pump, leer, dragon rage, and hyper beam but it'll never use hydro pump against a grass type which means, so long as Oddish isn't one-shot by a hyper beam, it'll always have at least two turns to land a sleep powder and take it out with PD. After that, Oddish can mimic agility from one of the Dragonairs and boost so it can outspeed the Aerodactyl and take it out with a BBG boosted neutral PD. Since the dragons can't attack, the only way Oddish can lose to them is recoil damage and confusion hax, but unless your luck is absolutely terrible, I doubt it'll be enough on its own to KO Oddish unless its health is already low from taking a hyper beam from Gyarados.
      Champion: The actual challenge. There's a ton of luck necessary to take down the champion at a reasonable level. For Pidgeot you have to go for a turn one sleep powder and hope it uses anything except wing attack and also that it stays asleep long enough to KO it with double edge. Alakazam is a major wall. It'll always outspeed, and I'm pretty sure Oddish can't survive even one psybeam or psychic so you need to hope for reflect and then land a sleep powder. Double edge should KO it in two, maybe three, hits and you just need to hope it doesn't wake up. If you're feeling ballsy, you can mimic recover to try and mitigate the recoil damage. Rhydon is free with PD and Exeggutor shouldn't be too big an issue so long as you have recover, otherwise you need to get lucky. Gyarados is a repeat of Lance's, hope it doesn't use hyper beam, land a sleep powder the take it out. Oddish might need to avoid PD here because it can't risk going into Charzard confused or with the move still going. For Charizard itself, hope for a fire spin/fire blast miss, land a sleep powder and then hope it stays asleep. There are just SO many ways this battle can go wrong...

    • @Otonio_Bruno
      @Otonio_Bruno 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Underrated comment. Oddish with Petal Dance / Double Edge / Sleep Powder / Mimic is definitely the best move list for gen I Oddish to beat E4 + champion.
      Acid is pretty weak with only 40 Base Power, going to 60 BP with STAB, while Double Edge is 100 BP (With recoil).
      As already explained up above by this commenter's creator, Lorelei and Bruno are trivial with Oddish Petal Dance and Mimicking Amnesia from Slowbro. Agatha is a bit annoying if she decides to confuse ray, but if you land a sleep powder turn 1 then mimic dream eater turn 2 (Provided Agatha didn't just randomly switch her Gengar), it's just a matter of putting everything to sleep then KOing it with Dream Eater. Lance is also easy due to his "good AI".
      Champion is hard to crack, but I would just sleep powder pidgeot and take it down with double edge. Hopefully Oddish might take a hit from Kazam and survive and the sleep powder and mimic recover after, finishing Kazam with either Petal Dance or Double Edge. When Rhydon comes, just spam recover to get full health and Petal Dance it and Gyarados later. Exeggutor is your chance to be fully healed + not confused for Charizard, so just sleep powder it and recover to a good amount of health then finish it with double edge. Chari, well, just hope you don't get Oneshot by fire blast and land your sleep powder and double edge away to victory.

    When using a move like body slam, it doesn't apply paralysis on Normal types, similar to how thunderbolt won't paralyze Electric types, but body slam can paralyze electric types. This is due to a mistake in the coding where the status can't be applied onto a Pokémon that shares typing with the move.

    Anyway, for a (maybe) better time at Agatha, teaching Mimic over Double Edge to copy Night Shade might have helped a bit. Her Pokémon have pretty low base HP, so fixed damage moves work great on her if you can pull it off.
    Agatha is always going to be an annoying fight if you don't have a strong physical move to hit her with like Earthquake. She is often the last major roadblock before the rival.

    Yeah, seems like the gen 1 AI only takes into consideration a Pokemon's first typing for Super Effectiveness, and if it succeeds there it doesn't check the second type. So that's why Erika was spamming Poison Powder on you, because poison > grass, but it's a status move and doesn't affect you.. but the AI is pretty silly.
    Also which fossil did you take this time? I missed it.

      @@hay4664 because all of his moves are neutral against grass, so it goes on to check the second typing. It's not that gen 1 only checks the first type, it's that it checks that one first and if it's SE, it goes ahead with that move, if everything is neutral or NVE it goes on to check the second type.

    I've done a solo Vileplume challenge and it was... AWFUL. Petal Dance is not Nidoking's Thrash. Not so much about BP (although it's an issue) but more that Grass has a LOT of resists and that you depend so much on it.
    In Yellow, my final strategy was:
    -Lorelei: Mega Drain Dewgong, Cloyster and Slowbro, Body Slam Jynx, Petal Dance Lapras.
    -Bruno: Don't use Petal Dance until Onix 2.
    -Agatha: One of the two that May be better in Yellow. Reason: Confusion Glitch.
    How? Remove Mega Drain por Mimic. Use Mimic on Gengar 1 and use Substitute. You are now inmune to primary confusion and secondary paralysis. Spam Petal Dance to all the Ghost (The resistance is only 1/2) and use Body Slam on the non-Ghosts. Evade being confused with no Substitute (if parafusion or sleepfusion without substitute reset). Beware of listas Gengar Hypnosis and Psychic move (it has Psychic).
    -Lance: Use Petal Dance first (does decent to Dragonair) and try to Mimic Ice Beam from Dragonite 2. Ice Beam the rest.
    -Champion: Remove Petal Dance for Solar Beam.
    -Mimic Earthquake from Sandslash, Solar Beam Sandslash (gen I Good AI is bugged and will ONLY use Poison Sting), Body Slam/EQ Alakazam, Sleep Exeggutor and Body Slam it, Solar Beam Cloyster/Vaporeon, EQ Flareon/Jolteon/Ninetales/Magneton.

    I actually think it would've been harder if you'd replaced squirtle. Venusaur is also grass/poison and good AI won't force it to spam hypnosis in the battles before the champion unlike exeggcute, and while arcanine does know roar it could still use something else instead of being locked into rage the way charizard is prone to and I honestly think that makes up for charizard 4x resisting your Grass moves, especially since venusaur also 4x resists them and is bulkier.

    With pokemon trying to use Poison Powder on an Oddish, Gen 1 had a weird ai glitch where the ai wouldn't recognise the second type of a pokemon. So if you bring any grass/poison type against a trainer, and that trainer's pokemon has a poison type move the ai will always pick that move. Even if it doesn't do anything (like poison powder doesn't)

    I think the Erika Poisonpowder thing is the typing glitch. Grass is weak to Poison, and Poison resists itself, so the game doesn't handle that well. It picks one, and it must have been picking "Super Effective". This usually only affects the message delivered, but it also affects the move choices of opponents with "good" AI. Doesn't affect the damage. Gen 1 is held together with chewing gum and hope.

  • @theroguearceus2869

    If I remember correctly, the reason y they kept using poison powder is because it is a poison move, and there is a Gen 1 glitch with dual types where the text acts as if dual types are only their first type, so the text believes oddish is a pure grass type. If move selection is chosen from the same coding, while damage or interaction coding seems to be correct in this instance, they could be using poison powder or poison sting because the txt will announce poison moves as super effective (even though it isn't really) into the pure grass type oddish (who is actually grass/poison, thereby making it immune to toxic)

    • @randumo24
      @randumo24 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought Swords Dance would have been a better choice personally. I don't think it's really worth keeping a grass move when it's only really the more effective choice against 3 pokemon in the entire elite 4, and I imagine +6 would solve that issue.

    • @AlfRiFProductions
      @AlfRiFProductions 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@randumo24 that would work too yeah but wouldn't solve the problem of trading headbutts with Agatha, plus it also could (maybe) make aerodactyl more of a hassle... so yeah i think your strategy works fine but its still brute forcing haha

    • @randumo24
      @randumo24 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlfRiFProductions I mean, you don't really have a choice but to brute force things in this one. Still, you have the option in that fight to freely set up to + 6 on the dragonair since it will always use agility and then it should be an OHKO on Aerodactyl from that point.
      I'd imagine the +6 on top of the added benefit of the badge boost would be far more beneficial than having a grass move for the three rock types, really just Rhydon since the Onix are not very threatening.

    Wow, somehow I overlooked this episode appearing on Saturday. (I did have other things on my mind at the time.) Well, better late than never!
    (4:07) Which fossil did you take? I hear the eating block sprites are good for the Super Mario World hacking algorithm.
    (7:37) A Grass/Poison-type can easily breeze through Erika, because of her "good AI", so you were never in any real danger here.
    (7:53) Actually, they see Oddish's Grass-type, and think, "oh, I've got a Poison move, which will be super-effective, so I'd better use it", without even factoring in Oddish's other type or even considering whether the move even does damage.
    (13:17) Silly Psywave. Just what were the devs thinking when they created this move? And to think the TM for it is your reward for beating Sabrina, even though you can get the TM for Psychic for free from Mr. Psychic's house nearby, and before you even liberate the city from Team Rocket.
    (14:19) Actually, with moves like Wrap and Fire Spin in Gen. 1, you are allowed to use items in between the individual hits of those moves, as odd as it seems.
    (18:25) Interesting ID number of 33331. Funnily enough, in the most recent Pokémon hack I played, my ID number was 00008.
    (18:51) Oof, and if you're frozen, put to sleep, or trapped by a move like Wrap while you're in the middle of Thrashing or Petal Dancing, you can't even access your menu in between turns. You're totally hosed. (Not that you'd be using the menu for much during this kind of solo challenge run anyway.)
    (20:21) You mean level 81, not 82.
    (22:22) Since you have a Poison-type, of course most of the Lance fight will be a piece of cake, because of his "super-effective" Psychic-type Agility and Barrier moves.
    (25:00) And that's game!
    (26:13) Yeah, I can imagine Steelix being a pain for Mareep. If you had Ampharos or even Flaaffy, you could at least use Fire Punch on it, but Mareep doesn't have that option. Maybe hope you have Fire or Water for your Hidden Power type?

  • @shanoc5902
    @shanoc5902 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Small optimization thought- For Agatha you should have replaced Petal Dance with Mimic. If you wanted a grass move for afterwards you just replace Mimic with Mega Drain. The Rival only has 1 pokemon you want Petal Dance for who is 4x weak to it thus Mega Drain will work fine and it avoids you getting stuck in Petal Dance. Lance only has 2 pokemon who can even hit you but Sleep Powder seemed to handle them well (could also grab Icebeam for Aerodactyl with mimic, which would be stronger than Petal Dance due to being super effective). Having Mimic for Agatha however would let you grab Nightshade, Lick, or heck Dream Eater to combo with your sleep powder (and super effective healing to boot) giving you a tool to deal with her when Petal Dance no longer had any opponents who you'd want to use it against. Meanwhile Mega Drain is better than Petal Dance for the champion fight since you only want it for Rhydon who will for sure die to an effective 240 power Mega Drain (4x weakness+STAB), not to mention you get to heal, and you can immediately go into Acid against the next pokemon.
    Also for a Bellsprout/Oddish run... Maybe Heartgold/Soulsilver? With 'Sprout tower' being a thing a Johto game feels like a good fit to go for them but since you just did a gen 1 run with Oddish I don't think a gen 2 run would feel that different so moving onto the Gen 2 remakes seems like it might be a good fit. Gen 2 would also work since a lot was changed there, but I definately think Johto for Bellsprout/Oddish is the way to go.

Basically by taking the routes leading up to the gyms, you build a team out of pokemon who naturally spawn from those routes. Not sure if it will be fun or not. So, after every gym you have to get a brand new team by the next gym, maybe as a "challenge" you cannot use repeat pokemon? Not sure, seems fun and I might actually try it XD

    As someone who always uses Oddish as their grass type in Crystal, I can definitely relate to the pain in this run, and I have more then one pokemon on my team and can use items but damn is Oddish rough to use until it either evolves into Gloom or is levelled up enough to get some half decent moves. The powders though, do make much easier work of Whitney's Miltank then a lot of other strategies I tried before I started using an Oddish as my go-to grass type in gen 2.
