2023 was actually an OUTSTANDING year for animation, with truly one of the most stacked lineups I’ve ever seen in history. The Academy Awards took place the other night, and The Boy and the Heron beat out the favored Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Shameik Moore, Miles Morales himself, claimed Spider-verse was robed! But, with such an outstanding year for animation, I wanted to explore this a little deeper. WAS Spider-Verse robed of the Oscar?? Did they deserve the win over Hayao Miyazaki himself? Was one of the OTHER nominees actually better than EITHER of them!? Well lucky for you, I’ve gone through ALL five nominees for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards so we can get to the bottom of which was most deserving.

Across the Spider-Verse's fate is frustrating, not because it lost to Miyazaki (That's understandable) but that it wasn't nominated for anything besides Best Animated. It could have been competitive in Best Score, Best Cinematography, or Best Editing but because of the Academies, basis against animation it was never considered for any award outside Best Animated.

The main stigma that plagues the animation categories remains that animation is synonymous with children's entertainment. Most nominated animated features are overwhelmingly kids movies, so it feels like a slap in the face when something as mature and profound as The Boy and the Heron wins. Miyazaki is heralded because he refuses to talk down to his audience, tackling deeper adult themes that just happen to be in anime form. He is the purest definition of a shokunin, a relentless pursuer of perfection at his craft. He's a master storyteller and if The Boy and the Heron is his final work then we must cherish it despite secretly desiring just one more.

No it doesn’t and Pixar is still doing fine. Pixar’s films are still doing well critically, asides from Lightyear, and if Elemental making a decent amount of money at the box office is any indicator that Pixar’s upcoming films can do well at the box office again as they did before the pandemic, it’s a good sign that the studio is going to continue doing well onwards. Plus, at least Pixar isn’t afraid to experiment with new animation styles and having new directors make their own animated films, which at least you can’t argue is an advantage they have over Disney. Enough with this “Pixar is in a downward spiral” mentality.

I would have liked to see spiderverse take it since it was my favourite to win, but Miyazaki is an ABSOLUTE legend that deserves his flowers and he might never get another chance to be acknowledged by the academy again as this might be his last movie. One thing that might have worked against spiderverse is that maybe the voters thought it was more of the same stuff and it is only a part one so the story isn't complete. It sucks not seeing my movie of the year win but it always has another chance to win when BTSV comes out and even getting nominated (alongside a Miyazaki film of all things) is a huge honor.

    - wanting to honor Miyazaki again while he is still around
    - Spiderverse has a third film coming and easy nom/probable win for that one, like the first

Its hard to say because I've always felt the Oscars don't really reward based on quaility or on knowledge. Its sometimes involves a lot of personal bias, some don't even watch it and the optics. Like they easily give an award because they might feel like a nominee has been in the industry long enough to get one, the name recognition of the person/people working on it, the vibes, etc.
Honestly animation needs a lot more award categories and needs to be recognized more. Like where's the award for best va? Best art direction/visual style? Do they think animation is only for kids?

I have only seen "Nimona" and "Spiderman across the Spiderverse. I consider the latter as "half of a film", but it's still the most incredible visual spectacle I have ever seen, and one of the most beautiful and deep and fascinating "half" of a story I have ever enjoyed. I try to avoid films that are longer than 1h30-2h, I made an exception for "Spiderman across the Spiderverse" (it was around 2h30 if I am not mistaken), I was so moved and engaged that I started crying 5 minutes in, and when the film ended I thought it was the half-time break and that in 15 minutes the rest would be screened because it felt too short for the 2h30 to be already over. I was very disappointed and irritated by the splitting of the film, because in general I don't like split stories and I carefully avoid series or other types of multi-episodes narrations, but also I have never experienced so much awe in a cinema and I will never forget this experience. As said, I consider it "half of a film", but despite this it still managed to win my total love and admiration.

As amazing as ITSV was, I also feel the one thing that holds it back is being the first part to a final two movies. The first Spider-verse movie was it's own story beginning to end, therefore it could be judged as such. With this in mind, despite the fact that that part two does work great as it's own sequel, it is kinda dependant on how it's second half finishes up.

This was their final time to award Miyazaki before he passes on for good. He's high up there in age and Spider-Verse got a massive thundering applause from The Academy. The cliffhanger ending really affected them, even though most didn't mind it. It almost came down to a split decision and came pretty close. However, Heron was rightfully deserved as the final film of a legendary animator and artist that may be wrapping up his filmography. Spider-Verse has one more film which is said to go all in and go Return of the King style on The Academy and win many Oscars. It also feels like a winner in its own way, winning more awards than any animated film ever, including being the first animated film franchise ever to win 14 Annie Awards, receive 3 Critics Choice Award nominations and winning one, 3 Golden Globe nominations, the first animated franchise ever to win PGA, ADG, ACE and 2 Critics Choice Awards for Best Animated Feature for its first 2 films. If this film won as much as it did, imagine what the next one will do. We're also getting more animated films from Sony Animation and Marvel in the style of them both. This includes spin-off films of characters from Spider-Verse like Gwen, Miguel, Hobie and even an animated Venom film and so much more. The possibilities are endless now and their awards sweep, high box office profits as well as criticlal praise is just beginning. They should both be considered winners for very different reasons, as both are masterpieces that are among the greatest animated films of all time. Both are groundbreaking, profound, compelling and moving works of art that transcend the lengths of animated storytelling. Heron has the Golden Globe, BAFTA and Oscar, but Spider-Verse has everything else, including the Critics Choice Award and PGA for 2 straight films. In many ways, that's even better and more valuable. Any thoughts?

In my opinion, the most likely reason for this win is legacy over anything else. Since Miyazaki said he was retiring once before, no one can be sure what his actual final film will be so they gave it to him now since they probably won’t be able to do it again. It’s just like how the Emmys give a TV actor an Emmy for their final season of eligibility after never winning before, the two biggest examples being Matthew Rhys for The Americans and Jon Hamm for Mad Men. Overall, I think the best one came out on top and that is all that really matters.

I can understand why some people are upset that “Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse” didn’t win because they consider “The Boy and the Heron” to be not one of Miyazaki’s greatest films, but the blame should be on the deceptive marketing strategy that GKIDS did to appeal to western audiences. Changing the film’s original title from “How Do You Live” to the “The Boy and the Heron” definitely made the film appear like the whimsical fairytale that would be like Miyazaki’s previous films like “Howls Moving Castle” and “Spirited Away” and the original expectations of what “The Boy and the Heron” should be, was unrealistic to what the original film intended to be and its understandable for audiences to mad about being deceived and taking their frustrations out on the movie. “How Do You Live” was the original title in Japanese theaters and the marketing was practically non existence, so they didn’t deceived the Japanese audiences, so the film was better received in the beginning, because there wasn’t any pro-conceived expectations for the film at the beginning.

People thinking pg rated movies are made for kids just because they're pg or animated in some way, that's a steriotype. Because it's not true. whats also a reason for atsv not winning is something you said yourself: these are all vastly different movies, they frankly don't belong in the same category, but their own more specific categories
like there could/should be one for 3d animation and one for 2d, maybe one specifically for storyboarding/screenwriting in animation, maybe one for like visuals (along the lines of production design or cinematography for live action)

Great that Slam Dunk, Blue Giant and Suzume were referenced in the video - I really liked The Boy and the Heron, but would not have grumbled if any of these had been nominated alongside or even instead of it. A great year for animation indeed!

I haven’t seen the boy and the heron but I’m not surprised it won and it probably deserved it. Across the Spiderverse is my second favorite animated movie of all time.

While Spiderverse2 is a long advertisement for the third movie (with a lot of great moments in it), “The Boy and the Heron” is self-contained masterpiece. Incomparable, actually…

I think there's a simple answer : it's the Oscars. Like every "best thing of the year" kind of ceremony, it's not a reward to the best thing but what the academy deems worthy. There's already a lot of issue with the way the academy treats animation as a separate category from live action, or the fact that they mostly reward the most "oscar friendly" content. A lot of times the academy showed either a disdain or disinterest for animation, they simply rewarded the one their kids loved or the ones that's more socially acceptable for this Hollywood-centered world. Plus : it's Miyazaki. Dude's pratically the only real animator treated as an author by mainstream medias, so rewarding a Myazaki film is just the easy choice for them to make.

If the first movie was Miles's story and the second movie was Gwen's, I assume that the third and last movie will be for the both of them and even the rest of the Spider people.

What did you think Elemental was about? You said the first half was boring, and Wade was insufferable- culture building and the MC flaws of racism bias (Wade) and trauma (Ember) is a thing that's apart of immigrant experience. And in a storytellying aspect needed to be set up, for the payoff that is the back half

I knew The Boy and The Heron was going to win, and I think it's really deserved. I was more upset that Spiderverse didn't get nominated for any other categories. It really sucks that the Academy throws animated movies into 1 category and calls it a day, all these movies (and the other ones that weren't nominated) deserve recognition beyond 'best animated film', but the Academy doesn't like giving other nominations to animated films.

At certain levels of quality i feel none is "better". Im glad if oart of the reason for the lose was the animators treatment. Thats an issue that deserves more atencion

I've watched both and honestly the two were tough. It was gonna be a tough choice. I think The Boy and The Heron deserved the win even though the fan favorite was Across The Spider Verse. It was really close

I enjoyed both Spider Verse movies, but Miyuzaki hands down deserved the Oscars. Big Hero 6 left one Hell of a shit stain in Oscar History when it robbed arguably his greatest piece of work of the award, meanwhile Sony has for the most part made Unholy movies. Spider Verse and the sequel do deserve praise absolutely, but Miyuzaki's films are magical. I'll always have an astronomical level of respect for Studio Ghibli.
