My Nana gave me her white 1099 Jeans/zigzag. She used it once for about an hour and then it sat in a closet in its case for several decades. It looks brand new. Lol. I only have 2 shops within an hour and a half from me. Neither of them will service it. I appreciate you sharing and teaching how to do this. I have been so upset and now I feel I can do this myself and use this amazing machine!
How fortunate you are to have such a mint family heirloom. Another thing to try is to join sewing machine repair groups on sites like Facebook. You can often find people in your local community who are hobbiests that might offer to service your machine or you can try doing some of the work yourself.
I inherited a Singer model 301 and wanted to take on the challenge of restoring, it to honor the person and ultimately learn how to sew. I have never used or worked on a sewing machine so your guidance is exactly what I needed. You make the restorative process comprehensive, unhurried, informative, and relaxing. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos and share your wisdom. This machine will live on for another 75 years because of you. Happy 2022
We share the same principles. Appreciate AND use Old School items. I have and use these vintage items: -1957 Kirby vacuum cleaner -Late 1970s/early 1980s Osterizer (I refuse to call it Oster) blender -Art Deco toaster -Mid 1950s Cory vacuum stovetop coffee maker. -Silex coffee/tea warmer -Art Deco tube radio (floor model) -Dazey tabletop 1950s can opener. -Steamer wardrobe trunk (1930s/1940s) which I turned into a dresser. -Antique hoosier cabinet Etc...
That size hook is also good for fishing out pieces of dark thread that get stuck between layers of light materials when making quilts. I keep one handy by my machine for that reason.
Very useful video. I just got a '56 Featherweight and found some very dark spots behind the faceplate I figured was from old oil. I want to do a good deep clean. I don't think this machine had much maintenance done to it so I'd like to start off my use with it the right way. Thank you for sharing your cleaning method.
I have my mom's 401A Singer Sewing Machine. While cleaning, I put white lithium grease on the gears. After doing this, I heard it will get hard eventually and be very hard to clean the gears. I bought clear grease but need advice on cleaning off the white grease first. Thank you for your help.
Would it be bad to use the Dawn dish soap spray to get the old grease off? I used it on some of the smaller bits (non-moving parts) of a '54 99k i just recently purchased and want to DEEP clean
I just picked up a Singer G Series with beautiful decals and all! There seems to be a large amount of old built up oil over a lot of the machine. How do you recommend safely getting that off?
Want to save yourself a heck of a lot of time? Wrap a pipe cleaner about an inch up and down a chop stick, dip in the alcohol and boom it’s all out in a jiffy!

@VintageSewingMachineGarage thank you! Great idea. I didn't even think to check Facebook groups!

Todo lo que Ud explica se puede abreviar en menos tiempo.gracias por el vídeo q nos enseña bastante
I always look forward to your videos!
That was a Boye crochet hook you were using to clean the old grease out with. 😊
Thank you Linda. I did not have a name for this. They appear often in the sewing notions of sewing machines I find.

Yes, it was (and is) used for crocheting fine lace. I use it to fix snags in polyester.
Love my 301! Thank you for giving me some more tips on how to keep it running for many years more!!!

Glad it helped Daniel!
Thank you for your very detailed videos.

Can blue creeper be used to remove old oil and grease?

Use that or any cleaner with caution. Dawn is very strong (great when cleaning greasy hands), but vintage machine paint finishes can be fragile.

what type of sewing machine oil do you use?

Do you sell your restored machines? Also, do you restore machines for customers?
Hi Penelope. Yes, we sell our restored models locally. We also restore other folks machines.
How can I send you a vintage machine for repair?
