- Ashis, a consultant civil engineer and part time social worker built his dream home without a single column of reinforced cement concrete. Made almost entirely of naturally occurring raw materials like stone and lime (for mortar and plaster), Ashis' home consumes far less energy for heating/cooling/ventilation. How did Ashis achieve this feat? The Lallantop found out on its Dungarpur tour for Rajasthan Assembly Elections 2018.

Hamare bharat ki construction me use ki gai purani technique Videshiyon (BRITISHERS) ki apnai gai nai technique se kaafi jada devlop thi aur aaj bhi hai. Jiska jeeta jagta udahran aaj in bhaisahab ne sidhh kia hai.

My ancestral home in Ladnun, district Nagaur, Rajasthan is built using the same materials and techniques. Its not a very good looking house but is strong even after 300 years. The walls are 2 ft thick and made of the local stone and the roof is made of strips of stone. All the plaster is of limestone. All the old 'havelis' of the entire region are made of the same materials and techniques and are at least a 100 years old. Every house has a rain water harvesting system. During covid, for the 1st time in my life I lived in my ancestral home for 8 months at a stretch and learned valuable lessons of survival in extreme temperatures, water conservation, eco friendly and sustainable options of living. The design and architecture of the houses there need to be studied and implemented today in order to build more sustainable and eco friendly houses.

The main building of my ancestral (maternal) home is over 250 years old and still going strong. The bricks were made and baked at the site, that created a small pond which is still in use. The mortar was a mixture of lime, molasses and powdered bricks. Later modern extensions were added which are not as comfortable in peak of winter and summer

I am also an architecture student and can help you in this regard using vernacular (local) materials but it depends on the location of the site whether limestone can be used or not considering the seismic zone of site

Problem is when you live in an area where the cost of traditional construction is very house. In Himachal, the cost of traditional kaath koni house is extremely expensive compared to the cement houses. Also it uses wood, a lot, which again may not be environmentally sound
