    Barry Keoghan's (pronounced Keown) character was the classic fool that dropped the pearls of wisdom throughout the piece. His scene by the lake at the end is phenomenal!

      He was essential as a smaller and more brutally wrapped concept in the movie. He also calls out one of the banshees through his outcome and clearly reveals one of the SECRET villains of the film. There are two banshees, however. You'll know them both by what happens when cause others to take action. REWATCH THIS if you didn't take that away!

    First TH-cam review that actually has 'Got' the movie. Banshees is a GREAT film. Except you totally missed the importance of Dominic, Barry Keoghan's, brilliant performance - he could well get the Oscar for best supporting actor, he is the base line that Pádraic measures himself against, but then you see Dominic show Pádraic that he is more intelligent and hurt than he is. Which affects deeply the outcome. It is surprising you missed this, in an assumption that Mcdonagh would throw in a character that doesn't contribute strongly to the story, especially as he appears all the way through.

    • @MainelyMovies
      @MainelyMovies  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Joel! Though, I certainly didn't "miss" anything regarding my personal opinion of the film. I'm surprised you're so hung up on what I deemed a literal minor nitpick in a film I gave a massive 4.5/5 too. Unfortunately, with the current route Searchlight has begun taking in promoting the film's FYC nominations, Keoghan has no chance at a supporting actor win. They're putting Farrell forth for best actor and both Gleeson and Keoghan as supporting actor. Between those two, Gleeson will certainly come out on top during a nomination bid, so the studio is already dashing Keoghan's chances from the get-go.

    Great review! As an Irish person, this film is such an incredible representation of the beauty and spirit of my country 🇮🇪 I want to offer some insight into the Barry Keoghan character, Dominic.
    I think Dominic actually adds great depth to some of the other themes of the film. I believe that Colm's motivations were entirely self entitled and selfish but also misdirected. Colm fancies himself to be quite intellectual and this pride he has in himself is probably his biggest sin. This is briefly mentioned when he's with the priest in the confession box. Then there's that scene in the pub when Siobhán corrects Colm about the century in which Mozart lived and released music. I feel as though this moment shows us that Colm is pretty full of shit and his pride and self perceived intellect is just a house of cards. Also, the song he is writing throughout the film is completely unmemorable and I think that's very intentional. By the end of the film, Colm has lost everything all because of his pride and stubbornness and most importantly, his internal belief that he is more intelligent than Pauric.
    Now I want to talk about how this applies to Dominic 😂 so Dominic is often perceived as being intellectually inferior to not only Pauric, but the entire island. Pauric is the one who names his as the biggest gom in the village in a conversation with Siobhán. But, although Dominic is troubled and has strange mannerisms, he often shows signs of genuine intellect and he's more perceptive than people give him credit for. He's a good friend to Pauric, yet Pauric still perceives him as being inferior in a similar way that Colm percieves Pauric. Without the constant abuse at the hands of his evil father, Dominic would probably be a well adjusted decent man and honestly probably a good match for Siobhán. I think that Dominic and Siobhán were the 2 most morally sound characters in the film, and they were innocent victims in this 'civil' war between the two main characters. Just look at how disgusted Dominic is when Pauric tells him the story about the lie he told that music student about his father and the bread van. It sort of breaks Dominic's heart.
    This turned into a longggg comment but I just wanted to offer perceptive on Dominic because he was probably my favourite character and I think Barry Keoghan stole every scene he was in. Maybe try look at his character in a different light upon rewatch.

      @MainelyMovies  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you and thanks for the extensive thoughts on the film! I definitely agree with your reading of the situation with Colm and his perceived superiority (at least intellectually) to Pádraic. Dominic is certainly a sympathetic character as a result of his abusive father and the fact that he remains so positive towards nearly everybody in town even though they all look down on him and treat him fairly poorly.
      This movie definitely incorporates the classic literary trope of the fool/village idiot and I can understand the significance of that and why so many people like and/or sympathize with Dominic. For me though, I found the friendship lost storyline between Colm and Pádraic to be much more compelling and personally impactful/relatable, so I preferred the film when its focus was directly tied to that, so that's why Dominic ends up in the minor nitpicks for me.

    Bit late to this because I only just saw the movie. Thanks for a great review. I love to hear other peoples thoughts. I definitely think Dominic serves an important purpose for this movie, even if I'm still trying to put my finger on it. A big theme of the movie is conflict and I think the friendship was reflecting what was historically happening at the time. The war on the mainland was referenced throughout the movie. This was the Irish Civil War that occurred post war of independence from Britain. It literally saw friends, family who fought on the same side suddenly overnight fight on opposing sides ( Padraig and Colm ). The war had collateral damage who saw innocent bystanders get caught in the crossfire (Jenny : ( ) Dominic I think was there to remind us the petty nature of the fighting and problems the main characters faced. He was the one really suffering and was looking for a way out. Everyone fighting lost sight of what was important and what was really happening around them. I think Dominic was maybe meant to represent that and maybe the forgotten victims of war who fall between the cracks.

    What I agree with most of this but Barry Keoghan was outstanding as Dominic and his character had an important role but you may need understand Mc donagh plays and Irish culture to see this there is always a village idiot who is made fun off but often they are intelligent. It wouldn’t be bit worse off comically without hi, only point I disagree with u on

    • @MainelyMovies
      @MainelyMovies  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't disagree that Keoghan's performance was good. I understand the purpose and prevalence of the fool or village idiot trope in literature, it just felt unnecessary to me for this particular story. Funny for some, sure, but not needed to tell the core story of the disintegrating friendship.

    I would be very disturbed by anyone that relates to colm. He is a drunkard psychopath that cuts the fingers off his hand and throws them at the house of his old friend. No character changes or has any redemption other than perhaps pauric becoming emotionally upset. Such as waste of talent on such morbid trash of a script. All the people praising it are having to convince themselves there are deep hidden layers and meanings to it to justify it. Why did we need the kid character to die at the end? What did that accomplish other than just give us another sad moment of misery?

    • @MainelyMovies
      @MainelyMovies  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I know I certainly empathize and relate to Padraic, but I think there are probably plenty of people who can empathize with Colm's desire to break from routine and pursue his own interests. The fingers are obviously extreme, but it's all just part of the parable to get across the underlying themes. I'm not quite sure what you mean by people having to convince themselves of the meaning of this film? The subtext of the underlying themes is pretty blatant, nothing's really hidden with this one.
      As for Dominic, there are a lot of people in the comments who have expounded on him quite a bit so you might be able to find some additional thoughts in those. But, I think it's mostly because although he represented the fool/village idiot archetype, he's a character that could be considered innocent in this. Just like Jenny the donkey. Since the film is analogizing the Irish Civil War (or any war for that matter) with the dissolving friendship between Padraic and Colm, the fates of Dominic and Jenny can be viewed as the unintentional human (and donkey) collateral of war. The innocents who had no part in the conflict, but still are greatly impacted by it.

  • @sieleeb
    @sieleeb ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Dominic seems to add some depth in the story instead of just comic relief. His character is full of irony. Not only he’s far from dumb and more educated than most of the people around him, but his ingenuity gives Padraic’s behavior a darker color. It seems to me that Dominic is not only heart broken but also deeply disappointed by Padraic’s selfishness, which brings him to losing hope.
