Tell him to switch dentists. The guy either sucks or recognized it was a cavity a long time ago and didn't treat it because a root canal means more money for him. talking shit is part of all athletic sports, e sports is similar, but it's a video game, so I don't see it on the same level because of the fact that it is surrounded by children. Talking shit to another grown man in a sport can be clever, advantageous, and done with good intentions. But some of my favorite players ever would just hand the ball to the referee, after a touchdown, and act like they've been there before. So, I see your points, but Michael Jordan or kobe talking smack is legendary, and I love that too.

Bruce is spot on about the Patriots -- that's why everyone hates them. For those of us that live a long ways from Boston, most of the fans we encounter are the kinds of guys who jumped on the bandwagon just because the team is really good and now talk all kinds of trash like they deserve to be able to or something. The team has a culture of trash talk and everyone wants to be done with it.

Sportsmanship is something that's been pretty good in motorsports. There are exceptions like NASCAR and some F1 drivers. But the majority of sports car and endurance racers just love the fact that they get to race a car and have others to compete with. It's something that has been changing in the positive direction in Super/Motocross. It's been really fun to see the shift from aggressive yelling on the podiums to instant handshakes and pats on the back after a hard fought race.

James is fairly spot on about the way professional sports work, especially related to pro-gaming. Ultimately, the biggest thing separating the two at the moment (in terms of athletes and public image) is that gamers have no Players' Union to argue in their favor.

I like how James is realistic about stuff. Trash talk works. In the real word, it's almost impossible to set sports and competition apart and, competition is in the sports essence, at the end of the day, trash talk can be a very effective way to interfere your opponents actions and mental health - at least when it works.

I was a 330 pound Defensive tackle in high school. Trash talking was the best part haha.
So glad you brought up the fact that Freedom of Speech does NOT mean freedom from persecution. So many people don't understand that fact. Yes, you can say whatever the hell you want. But your employer, fellow citizens, etc. also have the right to react to that however they like. You are only free from persecution by government entities.

Personally I think the reason that these sorts of things are becoming so common is that we've watered down bad words. Back in the day there were the "seven words you can't say on television." Of those words, I believe only one has never been said on basic cable. We've neutered words we used to use that were necessary to insulting someone. The truth of language is that we will always have a need to say bad things, we crave the taboo as humans. If we're told that something's bad, we're more likely to do it. Right now, the words that actually cut and offend are generally slurs rather than words of disgust or taboo actions. Vsauce did a great video on this topic. So in reality, I think that while these slurs are obviously rooted in prejudice, some use them just to offend and insult rather than to discriminate against specific groups. So after the novelty of using formerly offensive language has worn off, some will go to the next "most offensive thing" to disparage anyone they dislike.
As a fan of both Gaming and sports I loved this episode, but as an avid Celtics fan, Larry Bird was one of the biggest trash talkers in the history of the NBA.

me and a few friends entered a halo 5 tournament last year, in the finals the other team tried to big up themselves saying we're professionals we've watched there tactics etc. beating them and seeing their reaction afterwards had to be one of the most satisfying moments of my life.

Well the thing about MMA is, it's not as established as American football. So in order to get people riled up they trash talk and to generate interest among fans but almost 95% of the fighters have mutual respect for others fighters. even after trash talking. Even Conor Mcgregor.

Back when Halo 2/3 were king on XBL the trash talk was no holds barred, nothing off limits, and I was talking as much shit as possible, it was hilarious and infuriating, made it even sweeter when you beat a trash talker. But I just dont see it as a necessary part of gaming like I did back then.
