When I first saw my first G1 episodes I actually had trouble remembering certain Autobots, but because the Decepticons had so much more distinct and memorable personalities I could remember and tell them apart just fine.
Which says a lot given the Seekers.
The Autobots have great personality too. Honestly, the Decepticons are just a bunch of brutes and traitorous backstabbers.

However, a truly epic fight between them does happen, albeit in the Japanese continuity in The Headmasters.
