I've only seen bomb-sniffing dogs in an airport once, and that was when they were making some sort of training trip. Rather than ferocious little bomb-chasers, they really just looked like galloping puppies.
On my last trip to Israel there were armies of bomb sniffer dogs. If you saw an unattended bag, you could have the detection dog on the scene in two minutes max. That country is smaller than the USA, has only two major airports, and enough detection dogs to clear Syria of explosives. Here in the USA, we have over 50 airports, a huge army, and the airport security is a joke.
