Great interview Julie. I know this the challenge in Finland, the Finnish language. Many Finns and Finnish companies demand it. It is impactful to be able to speak the local language of course, and it will help anyone a lot to build a new life in the country. Finland is not the first or only country that does this. Of course if your client does not speak a shared language it is going to be a problem. It will limit Glessy’s opportunities. Ok, having said that… everyone must be treated with respect. Ailing working relationships and bullying is very damaging. Not only does it make Glessy suffer, but it also endangers the clients and patients. Sometimes there is no room for error. She gave a good example. Any good leader will stamp out bad behaviors and is able to explain why. Trust is very important and empowering. Trust must come from the right place of course and you can’t leave people with tasks that overwhelm them. Julie, you are right that Glessy needs a support network. She can and will learn the language in the right environment. Well, you are an example. I have not lived in Finland for over 20 years so I do not know what supports are available. I also know that Finns can be hard to approach and befriend. Hell I am. But I am considerably softer now and I really sympathize with her. Finns do speak English. I know they do and it is a complete cop out to pretend that they can’t. Some people can’t very well so they avoid it. In any case there needs to be flexibility in communicating, and you use whatever language. Glessy needs a Finnish language partner who is available to her constantly. Just talk talk talk. There must be people who are interested in interacting. I am too far away to make the times work but at least for me it would be tremendously interesting to learn about another culture and the Philippines.

Hi, very informative interview. Regarding low O2 sat, you might wanna consider also if the patient has DNR or hoitolinjaus since you mentioned the client is old. Nurses in your ward may not be really ignoring you. They may have limited interventions. Sometimes all they can do is give pain meds leading to saattohoito. Continue studying until you get you license for you to be sh at work. :)

Hi Julie , thanks alot for your information. I would like to know if English is been thought in primary and secondary school in Finland or only Finnish language.
@Adadioramma85 if I remember it correctly, my colleague mentioned that her kids attended school with English as mode of teaching, but in general kids are usually taught in Finnish... Also, it's good for kids to learn the language so they can easily adjust to the environment.
Teaching of a foreign language starts on grade1 in Finland and it is almost always English. It then continues all through primary and secondary school, every year. But if you want other subjects like math or science taught in English, there are only a few special schools that do it, so it is rare.
Did she graduate with 120 osp? I think it is not enough to be a practical nurse here, she should ask. Also I wanna comment on bullying side, she should contact someone in the employer if she felt she got bullied!
Yes po government ang KEUSOTE... wala akong experience sa kanila, pero ok naman ang experience ko sa government.. sumusunod tlaga sila sa rules/ contract and collective agreement

I live & work in Germany 25 yrs long....from a low orderly until they sent me to nursing school for totally free. I never regreted having to live and work with the germans, Now, I am in US and I retired here from nursing. I told my son in Germany. " Work not with your elbow but with your brain. He graduated magna cum laude as doctor of natural science totally free. FIY lang😅
I want to ask if Germany is still backwards? I saw a video wherein a guy from China had to queue outside of some government building in Germany just to get his paper work. Shouldn't a 1st world country be doing it electronically by now?

All the videos from different nurses always boil down to this: they do not know the language (enough), and because of this claim racism. Dear ladies: this is not the case. By Finnish law, the patients are entitled to care in their own language. Did you not know this before coming here? Our elderly do not know/remember English; you cannot expect them to speak it. Edit: you need a special permission to hand out medicine! Only recently some lähihoitaja nurses have received it. Has nothing to do with discrimination, your employer would be in trouble with the law if not following it!!
