    I don't believe my old ass an1x could ever sound like this... I'm going to have to go dig it up.

    @JayB, this superb sound set still lets the AN1x shine! It would be so great if you start again with 127 init patches on the AN1x and create an AN1x Soundset 2.0. 10 years after this video and almost 100k views! So many people with AN1x's out there will love it so much. Let's rock the AN1x once again !

    • @JayBmusic
      @JayBmusic  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The sound set gets updates from time to time. No need to start all over. It's like a rolling release. Some old sounds are overwritten too.

    wow, didnt know my an1x was a fully fledged EDM machine....thanks for your work JB!!!

    • @DG-ss1gc
      @DG-ss1gc ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s not , Jay B is the edm machine , he shapes the synth to it ! I owned my Yamaha es8 for about 17 years before Jay b came along and blew my mind with his sound set.
      And if you really are a trance lover
      Go to channel Sami Rabia and download his jP8080 sound set for the Diva digital plugin by u-he . (He made carbon clones of every major hook of the late 90s and 2000s sounds and if you buy it he’ll even send you midi files to study the actual music should you wish. )

      Any decent VA is going to be what is used for trance really. The JP8080 for example is still relevant even now in 2024 as it just has the trance sound that almost all trance songs use. It's interesting, I hear virtual analog more than any other synth type when it comes to trance.

    I bought my An1x for cheap 17 years ago second hand when they where hugely under appreciated. Keeping this one for the long run. These little gems are getting more valuable every time I check the second hand market.

    Amazing work! Considering how counter-intuitive the AN1x is to program makes your work even more impressive. Great sounds and great demo tunes!

    • @HornetBojan
      @HornetBojan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Kebu The less you know about this synth the better for creative process. At least this is my experience with this awesome machine. You turn one knob and it's on fire. :) Use it:)

    • @HornetBojan
      @HornetBojan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's true in almost all cases what you've written, this was my experience with AN1X at the time ... It was my first synth (OK, I come from a musical family, so I was turning the knobs on Mini Moog, Fender Rhodes etc. since I was five years old, but still, sometimes ignorance is a bliss:)You can know too much:)

    • @HornetBojan
      @HornetBojan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right. English is not my first language, so ... I agree.

    • @AndreasViklundOfficial

      My band got the AN1x as our second synth (the first was the CS1x). I knew nothing about analog synthesizers, and I didn't learn anything from the AN. But damn, I created some amazing sounds just by exploring, testing, failing, testing again - and suddenly finding small pieces of clues ("ah, that's what 'attack' means in relation to an envelope!").
      A few years later, after having added the Roland JP8000 and the Korg MS2000, I got the whole picture. And a Creamware Pulsar soundcard with DSP:s and a modular softsynth was the way to become a good sound designer...
      Today, almost two decades after unboxing the AN1x, I know enough to make one simple conclusion: You, Kebu, are amazing. And I envy the fact that you have both the Mono/Poly and the Polysix in your gearbox - because after all these years, those two are the ones I would really want to play around with! I do have them in my Reason rack so I get a close enough sound, but... Those knobs!
      (By the way, that old AN1x I had is still working - it was used in a band practice room last time I heard about it. And it is still paired with the CS1x...)

    I feel that I should comment on the soundset as well, not just commenting other comments. In short: Great sounds! To me as a former owner (and by now, experienced patch designer), I am actually impressed. Not by the synth, because I know what it can do, but by the way you have got the AN1x to work so good that each song example sounds perfectly complete. This video shows that the AN1x, despite its age, is a really good synth even after all these years. Thumbs up!
    (for a silly example of what I did with the AN1x many years ago, search for "Lagoona - Why does my cat sound like this?". You'll probably recognize the patch that gave the song its title! :))

  • @alexweiss388
    @alexweiss388 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    These sounds are truly amazing. For this synthesizer to be released nearly 20 years ago, it still holds up to today's standards of dance music. Exceptionally well done!

    • @Quant-Beat
      @Quant-Beat 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Absolutely, I think these old synths are better than today's. The sound synthesis was very well developed already in the 1980's, so late 1990's I think the development was more or less finished; it can't be so much better.

    • @alexweiss388
      @alexweiss388 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Luciano Drossi Yep. I couldn't agree more. I don't like the new workstations. The sounds are so tweaked and over effected that they lose something special.

    • @Quant-Beat
      @Quant-Beat 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think they also use "ugly" sounds and an "ugly way" of doing the whole instrument setting. JayB is in my opinion better musician and far better sound designer than many of the more famous artists. I don't give any names about those artists I really wonder how they became famous, but in my world, JayB should be world famous at this point.

    I mostly use my AN1X for pads. I remember I wrote an ambient/electronica song in 1999 that was centred around a kind of unusual pad chord progression (unusual in that it wasn't your typical 4/4 EDM timing) and when I went to remix the song in Logic in 2019, I went through what must have been 50 thousand soft synth patches from every synth I had, and I could not find a pad to replace it. I then started tweaking sounds from scratch and could never quite get there. So I rebought the AN1X synth and got it for 900 AUD and now they are worth quite a bit, but I am keeping it, unless I find a cheap AN200 or maybe if I buy the PLG150-AN for my MU100R, as I only really need the 5 voices then track to audio then have another 5 if needed.
    One thing I never ever seem to use in an actual song is my Virus Ti2 desktop. To me it's the most overrated synth of all time. As is Serum (softsynth).
    PS That said, the AN1X is a pretty good master keyboard. I have that and a MoxF6 for my masters, the Mox doesn't have AT but the AN1X does, so maybe worth keeping as the keys are also really nice.

    Hi Jay, these sounds are brilliant. Unfortunately for me ( as I have just managed to acquire one of these synths ) have no idea of how to get these sounds from the zip file on my mac, onto the keyboard as I am technically gifted as a fart in a bucket! Please any help to explain how I do this and then how I access them would be greatly appreciated. Do i need extra memory on th an1x to accommodate these sounds or is there enough storage on top of the usual factory preset sounds. Never dealt with sysex files before so I really have no idea whatsoever. Apologies in advance.

    Damn Amazing!
    Got to ask, do you regard the AN1X as the best synth you own / use?

      Thanks! According to hardware VAs yes, the AN1x is probably the best I have.

    The pluck at 6:31, I can't understand how the pluck can be so warm. It would be impossible (I suspect at least) to achieve on JP-80X0 and Virus series. It is a detuned doublesaw? In two parts each part detuned from each other, creating a Supersaw-like performance? Is the heat in this pluck much thanks to that you are using the Edge function, rounding off the sawteeth? I read in Yamaha's manual, they claimed that when using this Edge, it becomes warmer. I must tell you that this sound of a pluck I have never heard before, at least not what I remember. Brilliantly made video however, absolutely professional. I can imagine your thousands of hours with synth playing and programming.

      Actually this pluck is from a technical point of view nothing special. Two detuned sawtooth oscillators, doubled using the unisono mode, some chorus to make it thicker. The warmth comes from the EQing. Typical loudness bathtub curve. I rarely use the Edge parameter at all, so I can assure you that in this patch it's on 127.

      Ok, amazing how those aspects alone can create that timbre. It would sound very different on other synths, right?

      By the way, I have a dedicated question to you, because you are Yamaha synth expert. As I understand, there is a pitch envelope on AN1x? To listen to the patch "Hard Rise", I am quite convinced. Now, I don't find a pitch envelope on my PLG150-AN. The pitch envelope is really necessary for creating drum sounds, and I would like to do that with sinus, and this sinus lacks on my JP-8080 which has pitch envelope. I want to have a hardware with pitch envelope and sinus... Now, AN1x doesn't have sinus, but PLG150-AN has. Quite annoying to be honest.

      AN1x has Sinus as soon as you turn Edge to 0. Also the PLG as of course a Pitch Enveople. It's the very first three knobs in the AN Expert editor (PEG).

    • @Quant-Beat
      @Quant-Beat 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course, I read in the manual, that the PEG is a pitch envelope. I did never investigate it, because I only read Portamento there, but this is a combined pitch function.
      I just love my PLG150-AN, there are a lot of things this can do which JP-8080 doesn't reach and vice versa. I know you don't appreciate JP-8080 so much, but that's my most loved synth. Still, I use Virus C and TI2 as well as PLG150-AN as compliments. No one replaces each other in my opinion. Actually, I refuse to buy the AN1x now when I have PLG150-AN, I think the latter has even greater capacity.

    This is amazing! I've had my An1x from new and never made it sounds half as good as you have! 👍

    Stunning, amazing, both musically AND sonically.. wow.. JayB: When you can make the AN1x sing like this, is there any point in 'upgrading' to an Access Virus?

    • @JayBmusic
      @JayBmusic  10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I was never interested in the Viruses. I mean they're really good synths and it would certainly be nice to have one. But I don't see the challenge in making good sounds with them. Because they're known to be great, especially for EDM - unlike the AN1x. ;)

      JayB
      Ah.. so are you after the 'sounds', or the 'challenge in making the sounds'? ie why make life harder that it has to be? I'm just stunned that your sounds (to my ears) sound VERY 'cutting edge' modern EDM, and I cant hear anythign 'missing' sonically compared to the Virus. (Any Virus users care to comment?)

    • @JayBmusic
      @JayBmusic  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Andybaby Yeah, I like the challenge in making sounds. Mainly with synth that are not known for making these sounds. This started with the Korg X5D by the way. A synth that's not supposed to create huge supersaw sounds.

      Andybaby virus is kinda overrated in my opinion. I used to have numerous synths, I still have Polar TI and I also have Sylenth and I can tell you this is Virus if not better without the need of cables and straight audio quality. Yes it is nice to have dedicated knobs for everything, blinking LEDs and fancy aluminium body, but as far as sound goes, I don't see much difference there. Pretty much any virtual analog (or analog for that matter) synth is capable of sounding edgy and EDMishy - with the right programming.

      JayB You do make really great sounds. (I have your PLG150-AN patch set) I also enjoy making, editing & tweaking sounds, especially on my Kurzweil PC3K (Kurzweil's V.A.S.T. is so amazing!) Alesis Fusion, & Korg Triton.
