Ahhh how in the hell did I miss this band when I was a teen in the 90s. I was literally listening to Hum - Stars and the other day and came across this gem of a band. I guess I was to caught up in Alice in chains ,stp, Pantera , Soundgarden ,etc. But definitely 🤘🤘
it was hard to escape the noise of kurt and layne and vedder. too few of us knew that there was a band whose music was more mature, but we weren't ready then, and it wasn't as marketable as the rest. Sunny Day Real Estate stands as the best band to come out of that mess. at least they were honest about what they were instead of decrying fame while being famous.

Yes re-recording the parts sucked, but what else can you do if you try to get someone to do literally 90 takes and none of them are good enough for the band leader? I mean... it is what it is
I fucking love Helmet so much, and Quicksand (and Rival Schools!) so glad my teen years coincided with the early and mid 90's. We had no idea how good we had it.
Still one of my favourite artists, they were really ahead of their time especially with their album Diary which is still the best emo album ever made imo

Coming to OKC March 14th 2024! As a musician these guys have been a huge influence on me. I'm beyond excited to see these guys. my dad was a huge fan of sunny day. Love these guys man!!!!!!!!!!
@@z3rker if you mean groups like fugazi then yeah but thats more like punk/post-hardcore this is definitely more on the emo side. if you can show me a group that was doing this type of style, soft vocals, quite verses, loud chorus, melodic arpeggiated guitar riffs , then those will be the godfathers, but as far as im concerned, sunny day real estate were right at the beginning of emo post-hardcore

I definitely would put them up there with fastball, and Nada Surf, but I don’t think they ever left that caliber of bands. Some of my favorite bands of the era. They came from Seattle but were able to have a unique sound different from Grunge. This definitely killed their popularity but they created a new wave of emo and honestly ushered in the era of 90’s alternative

From most of what I read about those sessions for The Colour and the Shape, it sounds like Gil Norton was pushing Grohl to re-do the tracks more than Dave wanting to create such trouble. Despite what happened, Grohl wanted Goldsmith to keep touring with them, but obviously he had issues with his work being scrapped.
Thank Christ Dave did the drumming on the colour and the shape album. It’s hands down their best ever. Nothing will ever beat it period. Nothing against William but Dave’s drumming on that album is so on point it’s scary.

The Promise Ring? They aren't as brooding and sad as Sunny Day (not that there is anything wrong with that), but they definitely got that emo sound. Check it out for yourself

Excellent quality recording. Saw them live in 2010 in London, UK, supported by Biffy Clyro. It was a short show, but one of the best I've been to.

I saw them twice in 1994 - one show was at Fordham U - about 100 people. The second was at CBGBs - about 200 people.
