Finally - I've been looking at Kate Liu's Chopin for the past few years and Cho's recordings of Debussy, but I'm glad to hear Son Yeol-Eum again with this magnificent recording of arguably one of Beethoven's most complicated works. Perfect use of pedal, a sublime fugue and such a well-tempered left-hand, specially in the 3rd-movement. The phrasing here is really remarkable.
A completely convincing vision of this lyrical masterpiece of Beethoven. This is a short work if the performer understands the shape and structure. How fortunate we are that this pianist is so committed to the great classical era works. Where is Deutsche Grammophon? They should sign up the best for Beethoven...this is it.
She is my favorite by far among current living pianists. She is a rare pianist who has her unique piano tone. Her performance never fails me; I tell you I'm often offended by pianists or maybe I don't understand them what they are trying to do :-) I'm happy that her best years are not yet come and she will play the piano many many more years.

You have to be a total pianist, like Yeol Eum Son, to gather in one recital the Hammerklavier with the minimalist Arvo Part and the eccentric and brilliant Gulda. The contrast cannot be greater, and Yeol Eum has already shown that she is able to overcome the most difficult challenges, with which very few pianists dare.
I write these lines after a first audition of this performance, which fascinates me, but also stuns me because of its colossal complexity. I feel like a small animal, surprised by the crack of thunder, stunned by the gigantic explosion of the final Fugue, fascinated by the harmonic changes of the Adagio ... I will have to listen to it many more times, as in fact I do with all the performances of Yeol Eum Son.
Thank you, Yeol Eum, for complicating my life so much with your music, which as soon elevates me to the heights of the unattainable dream as shakes me down to the foundations like an earthquake. Both things, and much more other, that make me feel more alive.
Some years ago in her interview in Korea, she mentioned that she had given up learning Jazz piano. She didn't show up to class or something like that. Thus I'm a little surprised by Gulda's piece in the program. No, she is not a Jazz pianist ;-)

I am overcome by envy. I have played Beethoven sonatas (as an amateur) since I was a child. Listening to Yeol Eum Son's artistry is simply beyond comprehension for me. It's not just a matter of her towering technique. She never pounds. She uses pedal sparingly. Every phrase is thought out and constructed with perfection. Each phrase has a start and an end.
It's as though Beethoven was standing behind her and instructing her on the voices in the fugues. For those of you who have not played the piano, I advise you that this is unbelievable.
This sonata presents challenges in hold the work together, because Beethoven constructed it as almost completely separate works...not just separated movements.

So true! It's obvious you know what you are talking about unlike some others. I love Yuja, Bolet, Gilels, Sokolov, Pletnev, and Yeol Eum Son! She is a sublime artist. We are so fortunate to have TH-cam. I never would have found her.

Memorising all those scores of 47:50 minutes (nearly 48 mins.) performing with all those dynamic parts, she (and most of all pianists) must have a special brain.
This is one of the most exceptional performances of the "Hammerklavier" I've ever heard. It has *nothing* to do with testosterone. (If you want a "testosterone" moment, look at the LH e-flat 46:20.) I'd suggest that Mr Pollini would note that the performance of his to which you likely refer is a studio recording with those benefits. Son's performance all the more remarkable because it's live. Everyone I know who plays op. 106 says the fugue is treacherous not just by itself, but because it comes after more than 30 difficult minutes of playing. It also feels like Son's clear, spectacularly shaped fugue is played at Beethoven's "impossible" tempo. The playing is passionate, majestic and imperial. There's no hint of strain, which this pianist finds astounding, and not one ugly measure. Thank you for posting.
Have you listened to Levit’s playing? Son’s first movement is completely incomparable to Levit’s as it is first of all under tempo and it even ignores all the motifs
Love it!!! There are many performances to be loved for the difficult Beethoven's Hammerklavier. This is one, no doubt. Like Yuja Wang, this girl goes inside the Master Piece with her entire soul. The Adagio so moving!!!

Commendable effort! But for the slow movement I will not forget Claudio Arrau ‘s poetry, and Maurizio Pollini’s peerless sense of line & eloquence and sublime outpouring of lyrical feeling. For me, these last two remain unsurpassed in this formidable sonata.

i think u may put the 2nd mov. after the 3rd. and leave the intro 4th mov. out..

Wow, the piano technician obviously had a day off. That out of tune treble right from the start really is highly annoying. I love her playing, but this piano really is a disgrace.
The Fugue is pretty strange ........ her pianism is nice, clear, a little boring.

Beautiful sound, musical phrasing, but...too slow tempi! Beethoven put his metronome markings there for a reason: he WANTED his movements to be fast! Try them, and you will listen to a totally different work. Sorry-no applause...
you do realise that the metronome markings Beethoven gave us are literally impossible? No recording in history has played to his metronome marking.

Skip to the fugue and many, many mistakes are made.
@@LachlanTyrrell2003 it is not important what "the pianists" say, but what Beethoven himself wished for. He placed metronome markings ONLY on this sonata. And them he also sent it to his publisher with the note "I have written a sonata that will keep pianists very busy for generations to come." So, he knew how difficult it was: that's what he wanted. Also: many things have been labeled as "impossible" and yet some people have found a way to achieve them. This sonata is for pianists with nerves made out of steel...Also, with an adoration for this specific work.

May be it is anything else, but it is no Beethoven at all. Her tone is too thin and there is no conception and inner tension; it is just a superficial training of one of the deepest pieces of the whole piano literature.

I really love Son, but I definitely don't feel she has enough testosterone to do justice to this piece. Listen to Maurizio Pollini's version - that one is transportive.

The Hammerklavier is not a hammerfest, it is a lyrical masterpiece. This pianist is focused on the shape and structure of this work. Of other pianists, only Gould also saw the melodic contours in such a convincing vision. It seems like a short work if the interpreter understands it. We are fortunate to have this performer available to play the classical masterworks.
But the progesterone reigns in here!
Valentina Lisitsa does the fugue part as well as anybody (in history, I'll bet), so it's not testosterone that's lacking here. I just think it may need big concert hall acoustics to really impress.
Misogynistic comments makes me so sad and tired. She's magnificent, what is your problem. This is not a sport of comparison but Claudio Arrau was also a good pianist. We all do our best, don't we ?
Yeol Eum Son played the first fugue of the fourth movement with 5' 14 minutes. HJ Lim managed to play in her Live Video "Hammerklavier Fugue" the by Beethoven prescripted speed of unbelievable 4' 46 minutes [ 144 Mälzel per crotchet]
