- Winter is upon us and that means it is time to gather red bait and scratch around the rocks with the lighter tackle targeting Gladden. South Africas national fish! Gerhard from Mulloway Charters and I went for a long walk to target these fish. we managed to catch a few galjoen but they where younger specimens.

Nice..do you use worm type baits for galjoen in your area or mainly rooiaas?
Mainly red bait, when the water is clean and flat the worms tend to work. But i prefer the red bait in our area

How it bru! A numer of lure work really well.
Top water lures such as the Skitter V from rapala, the z-stick, good old plug like a 3/4oz gt ice cream, even the 1oz, zara spook by heddon for calm and flat conditions.
Sub water lures like the rapala max rap 13cm, savage gear has some lekke jerk baits too, look for something in the 10-14cm range, live target has some lekka jerk baits too. Just retrieve jerk 2 or 3 times, pause and repeat.
Bucktails are always a winner too, 3/8oz and 1/4 oz in black over white, olive over white, red head with white, plain white and chartreuse over white thoses are the main colours.
If you have these lures , you will cover most of the basis👌🏻
