If the answer is No, when exactly will we ever use natural minor scale ? Thanks so much !!!

    Very nice - though very UK exam oriented.
    Jazz musicians and US viewers may think of anacrusis as pickups. They wouldn't think of quavers either, but rather eighth notes.
    Anacrusis is an odd word - wonder how it came about.
    The matching end bar length - minus the anacrusis is/was definitely a thing in folk music.
    Is it still a matter of concern, or is that only for exams?
    This is very helpful for writing in minor keys - though the points are rather subtly covered - but they are covered in detail.

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Anacrusis comes from the Greek ἀνάκρουσις, anákrousis, literally meaning 'pushing up'.

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When a piece of music is in a minor key it’s going to mix harmonic and melodic minor because one has to accommodate the implied chords. There is therefore flexibility about the 6th and 7th degrees.

    21:10 what could happen if I use melodic minor instead of harmonic for bar 7?

  • @frderek
    @frderek 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You don’t use small-case Roman numerals for minor chords. Why is that? Not a criticism but a genuine question - is there any advantage/disadvantage to sticking to upper-case?

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I generally stick to upper case all the way simply because it's easier - this is the system known as Basic Roman. Using lower case for minor chords is the system known as Extended Roman. You can use either OR you can use Jazz Chords or Figured Bass.

    • @frderek

      OK thanks for that. I have come late (60+) to this field, coming from a science background. I am hoping to do both theory and singing at level 5 in the next 12/15 months. I've been singing tenor in choirs for about ten years now (5 years as a treble many years ago) and the theory (unsurprisingly) fascinates me. Will be buying your 1-5 stuff in the near future :-)

    • @MusicMattersGB

    Hi Gareth. Would placing courtesy flats on A and B in bar 3 increase the exam mark? And is the student expected to repeat the bequadro on the second B in bar 7 although it is not necessary since you already have one before it in the same bar?

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could add courtesy accidentals in bar 3 but it wouldn’t increase the mark. The second natural sign in bar 7 wouldn’t be needed for the end result. It’s only there to illustrate the process of putting in the cadence first.

  • @khiemngo1098
    @khiemngo1098 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really enjoyed this video, thanks Gareth a great deal! The one thing that confused me is that chord V for bar 7, as Gareth explained, is [G B D], not [G Bb D]. I thought the chords are made up from the notes of the key. In this case, we are in the key of C minor, and the notes of C minor are C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab, and Bb. Thus, technically speaking, chord V should be [G Bb D], not [G B D] because B is not a note of C minor. In addition, this should not have anything to do with harmonic minor or melodic minor. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I hope to hear from Gareth as soon as possible. Thanks so much !!!

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi. When we are dealing with harmony we usually use the harmonic minor. In the harmonic minor scale the 7th degree is raised so in this case Bb becomes B natural. All the best. Gareth

    • @khiemngo1098
      @khiemngo1098 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gareth, you mentioned harmonic minor but all I saw is the melody (treble clef). Question #1: There is no bass clef, so where's the harmony ? And Question #2: You actually used chord V to develop the melody in bar 7, should melodic minor be used instead ? Thanks a lot !!!

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What I’m talking about during the video is writing a melody that implies a clear harmonic implication because if the melody implies a clear chord scheme it will work much better. In bar 7 the melody is not moving by step so it’s better to spell out chord V in the harmonic minor to make the implied harmony work. If the melody were moving by step you would have to think about the melodic minor scale so as to avoid melodic augmented 2nds.

      When composing a melody you need to take note of the harmonic minor but you also need to use the melodic minor in order to avoid melodic augmented seconds between the 6th and 7th degrees of the scale.

    • @tasfa10
      @tasfa10 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @frderek
      @frderek 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tasfa10 Gareth is using the simple Roman Numeral scheme so that "I" means C minor. In the extended Roman Numeral scheme it would be "i", of course. It is also quite in order to finish with a major tonic (naturalise the E in the run down) that's a Picardy third and might impress the examiner!

  • @elenayijiazhu9509

    Why do you use harmonic key in measure 3 but melodic in measure 2 and 6?

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In any real piece of music there will be a mix of harmonic and melodic minor key. Basically use harmonic minor for the harmony whenever possible but be ready to accommodate the melodic minor where a melodic part is crossing the 6th/7th degrees of the scale and is using melodic minor.

You have to hear it, feel it, know it from within, be inspired, learn, learn, learn try, try, try, live your life and think about it, meditate, do whateveryouhavetodo to become a vessel filled with music.... no theory needed...it can sometimes help, but ii is in itself lifeless and useless...everything else is just academic nonsense...If there is no voice inside, forget it and become something else.

      Inspiration and creativity are absolutely the essence. However, knowing your theory just makes it all so much easier.

    How could you score 3 quavers 1 semi quaver and a crotchet in 2nd measure in the time signature of 6/8?
    6/8 simply means 6 quavers in one measure or one bar but in 2nd measure its 3 quavers 1 semi quaver and a crotchet which equals to 5 quaver and a semi quaver.its funny

      If you look ahead in the video you’ll see how this is resolved. Often the given opening includes a final bar that needs completion.
