We had fish all over the place non-stop hooking you think what you have on the best day down there is just a drop of what we used to have. There was everything from steelhead to king coho big browns Lakers and big big walleye. It is a shell of it's former self
That's the Grand River, 6th Street Dam in Grand Rapids., Michigan. Before that, it was called the O-wash-ta-nong” (meaning “Far-away-water"). Where is the Oswego? New York?
I grew up in Grand Rapids and have fished here lots. Ive been in the middle of that up by the dam when fishermen are shoulder to shoulder all the way across. You better be in shape. At one time snagging was legal here back in the 70s. We pulled some hogs out of there.
Nice chrome, I live on Vancouver Island where the marine habitat and estuaries are overrun with seals and sea lions. The Steelies are sitting ducks and the fishing sucks these days. 30 years ago I could have a 10-fish day, I didn't even roll one last season. There are still lots of native Rainbows in the lakes and rivers but the sea-run fish are doomed until something changes.
That’s terrible man. I’ve always dreamed of fishing out west, but I swear I hear more and more stuff like this every year. Wishing you a good season regardless
Damn, how these vids have improved!! I would say add some subtitles when possible for the hard to hear audio parts? Loving the recent uploads and the edit style
Great video, been watching this channel for a while and the quality just seems to keep improving. I’m surprised you’re allowed to fish so close to the dam though. Here in Ontario you have to be so far back from the base of a dam. Anyways, great video nonetheless, keep up the great work
She has no remorse. See too many people messing around down here not aware of how bad it can get. My buddy had their boat get sucked into the dam during the springtime. They’re lucky to be here..
Takes some apples to venture out to spots like that! Been there done that, I'm planning on a "Brule" trip this spring with feeder crews on lake Superior trying to decide on a new rod , looking at a loomis e6x 9 or 9ft 6", 2500 type spinning reel.😊
Really awesome dude. I never would've thought that having the float distanced so far away would work. Is it because of the water you're fishing is very deep? The waters near me are 2 or 3 feet at best so I usually have of keep my float close to my beads
@@Chiefz no, I'm referring to just the leader length.. The distance from the hook to your float was a few feet, but the rivers I have are like 2 feet deep only! I can't keep my float and hook that far because the hook just gets snagged at the bottom. Idk how they do it with long leaders lol
To answer your original question, yes. Our rivers are way deeper than 2-3ft like yours. We have to get our bait down fast and it can be tricky in fast deep water
@@nickmeingast9557 yep- fish ladder down to knee high water- cut over towards the quarry hole and the guys fishing in the sidewalk, line yourself up with the second pillar and you can wade all the way up to the dam. (Almost) River needs to be below 3000 CFS. Also if your facing the dam working up, be careful, to your left, there is a channel that has some holes that drop off. You likely see guys there in the afternoons.
I’ve fished at 6th street back when I was in my 20s. I made it to be 63 because I stopped fishing there. I know when it’s your time to go that’s it but I think about those logs hung up on the dam and when one drops off it could be over
Wouldn’t say this place is my first choice, just my nearest. The thought of logs spilling over terrifies me. I’m personally in support of them taking out the dam. Any higher this place starts to get very dangerous
@@Chiefz Current looked wicked in the video. One has to be very agile to fish that water. I assume you have studs on your boots judging by the way you move around.
I remember driving to my grandmother's house and seeing hundreds of guys fishing down in river. I always wanted to do it. This was over 20 years ago mind you. Never got the chance to do it. Never had the money for the gear. I only fished a river run once and had a broken bass rod and some crappy reel. I did hook up but I lost the fish because I had no idea what I was doing or what to expect. Some day I'll get back there for a spring or fall run. Great fish! Keep on that C and R most of the people there catch and kill.
I have seen people die there and on the Salmon River since 1975. I'm old and don't mess with it anymore. I would rather be on the lake in 5 foot waves on a nice summer day.
There's a river I fish back home the same way gotta watch those spill over dams they are extremely dangerous especially if the water up a little a buddy of mine fell hit his head on a rock went into the current was pulling him back to the dam if wouldn't of been there he probably would of died
@@Chiefz I didn’t realize you were gonna get all butthurt over a joke. The average person is also smart enough to know when to wade it and when not to. You TH-camrs are wild. And so soft.
@@jessehamilton957 not even pressed. I disagree, average person see’s handful of people wading higher flows, thinks it’s okay and gets caught in a bad situation real quick. Wouldn’t recommend anyone just walk in here thinking everything’s A-ok. Seen people struggle when it’s low. Even low flow without cleats you’re skating out there

Rick is the man, dude never leaves that place I swear
Yep, went here in the summer of 93, dam was even worse back then. Glad to see people still fishing here!
Creed into the sunset man. Take me back.
Sweet video bro, that shot of the float going under and you up on that rock was crazy
6th street baby !!! Couldn’t agree more about the dangers of this river. Be safe folks ✌🏻
the best time of the year is here, loving the content brotha
Is this by 6th Street in GR?
Amazing content man. Criminally underrated channel here, keep up the good work dude!
Thanks Chad, means a lot. I love this stuff dude

I got skunked there last Friday. Thank you for showing your rig because I had no idea how to float fish there.

I don’t think he’s taken the beanie off!! Thanks buddy
Caught my first steelhead there while taking a break from our booth at the fishing/sportsman show they held there every year
BRO THAT IS A GAME FOR THE YOUNG AND BRAVE!!! GREAT VID !!!

What a GOAT!!! Absolutely love your cinematography, you perfectly capture Michigans beautiful colors. Keep it up man!

Production quality is always so damn good. Love you man
Thanks buddy❤️ See you on mw2
Love the content! Stay safe out there
Thanks bro! Hope fall is treating you well
Yessir caught 39 kings this season
I pussed out the time i tried to wade up there last year. Very rocky fast moving area. Maybee just getting old as well.
So be it. There’s way better places to catch a steelhead. Risk to reward ratio isn’t always there
Awesome video guys
Sweet video love the content keep up the good work I keep looking forward to every upload
Means a lot thank you 👊🏼
Sick content man! Im just getting into salmon fishing also in GR hopefully run into ya someday soon tight lines man
I’m sure you’ll see me out there!
Mega-rainbow trout. Nice.
Definitely one hard river to fish . Use to fish it years ago before they put the walkway in. Awesome video nice fish
Thanks Bob! Pretty cool you got to see it change over the years into what it is now. Kind of excited for them to rip this thing out one day
Lucky you had help netting your fish. Last time I was there I had to net a 11 lb steel by myself and with a short handle net.
great video chiefz 👍🏽👍🏽
My Dad and I would fish off the wall. Probably a little more challenging to land steelhead and salmon.
Nice Love fishing dams
Always so damn good Chiefz. Loving the content. Hope you come back to Twitch for MWII. Big love
I’ll be back bro!!
can't wait to go for a swim here
Bring your floaties❤️
That intro was absolutley dialed my man! Sub from me man! Keep it up.
Much love dude! Thank you
Where is this that?
Would it work for king salmons in the river ?
Not so much
6th street is no joke! So many boats have been capsized there. I've only fished there in fall when water isn't as fast
You aren’t kidding. My buddy was in a boat and they all got thrown out in the springtime getting caught in the dam. He’s lucky to be alive
I’ve trained swift water rescue below a number of dams, and this is the dam that scares me the most

What makes you decide to use a bead or spawn sac?
Water clarity, flow and other variables. Bead bites just hot in the fall generally
What bait is being used
10mm Beads
God the water looks hectic.
I miss you Chiefz!!
See you soon bro!!
Glad this made it in your video. I personally have watched people die here. Multiple boat flipped over there yrs. The old dunk tank.....

I went to fish ladder park for the first time today, and I counted almost 40 anglers, too much pressure for me!
Not everyone’s cup of tea! Lol. Don’t blame you
40? Light day. Sometimes in the spring you’ll see 40 boats alone lol

Wadding staff and cleats are a must. Also, wading to the quarry side IMO is safer and easier. Shallows up a lot down towards the overpass. Be safe…

Grand Rapids Michigan
whats better beads or spawn sac
Depends on the senerio
Fish both and let them tell ya! I like spawn when it gets a little colder
