can an auger dig in rocky soil?

Bought a couple of augers to start off some post holes, pretty much useless, one of them bent too. I guess these are really only good in soil with no rocks.
I have used larger two man augers before but hard to use in the location I was wanting to dig this time.
If you want to do more than a few deep holes, best idea is to get someone to come along with a dingo/kanga to dig them - a lot less effort and a whole lot faster - especially in the Australian sun.
