You forgot to mention an important fact. Her son, who was autistic, died in the Tsunami that hit Asia in 2004. It was heart-breaking for her. She is very much adored by the Thai people.

Beautiful, smart, adored by Thai people - and an extremely talented singer. You should check out her music video's! I live 20 kilometers from the beautiful Ubolratana Dam near Non-sang in the Isaan region of Thailand. The Dam is named in her honour :-)

Her name, Ubol Ratana อุบลรัตน์, reads Au-Bon-Rat. The "Ta-Na" at the end of her name is silent (its just there to conserve Sanskrit alphabet of the original word)

@@SinaAla Romanized Thai names are tricky especially if they follow the RTGS - Royal Thai General System of Transcription whereby as a rule of thumb, the alphabet "B" is phonetically treated as a "P", "V" as "W", "D" as "T", "L" as "N", "J" as "T" etc. Also, as pointed out, some end letters are silent. Thus, the international airport of Bangkok that is named "Suvarnabhumi" (written using RTGS) is actually pronounced "Soo-wa-na-poom". Another example, the beloved late King Bhumibol Adulyadej's name is pronounced "Phu-mi-phon Adun-ya-det"". But if you read Thai script, there will be no mistakes made. :D

Perhaps her objective for entering politics was to have her full royal status reinstated, which I think happened this past saturday during the coronation ceremony. As for her being 67, she looks amazing. I thought she was a second daughter of the new king!!!
