I lived & surfed for most of my life on the northern beaches of Sydney then moved to the Central Coast of NSW where I still surf. I'm approaching 72 yo and in all those years, like other surfers, I didn't learn very much about sharks apart from a modicum of fear and a vast amount of respect. But recently I stumbled across your channel and am now seeing these magnificent creatures in a new light. Thank you.

This is just spectacular. Thank you so much. I have experienced these exact situations in the water myself many times in Southern California. One time at Sunset there was a huge shark just “resting in the water column” as you say and we were baffled by how inactive it was as dozens of surfers frolicked in circles around it. I could see it clearly from the stairs but nothing like this amazing aerial footage to illustrate clear patterns. You are doing a public service. keep up the great work. we are all watching.

I think sharks follow the law of randomness, one day they could be peaceful a whole afternoon, for example if they just had their meal, and on another day they could eat the leg of a surfer

So unbelievably amazing to see sharks like this so close to humans. As a native of San Diego I always knew they were lurking just past the wave line. RE White sharks and stingrays: Two things I saw during both Shark Week and Nat Geo Shark Fest: Young white sharks like stingrays. One South African juvenile ended up being 'necropsied' and they got something like 6-=8 stingray stings out of the stomach; another was the young/teenage white sharks who have moved down to Guadalupe and 'mixing' with the adult Giants. Apparently these rowdy teens stay in shallower water: one was even filmed trying to snap at a batray.

this channel is very interesting and informative. it shows an unbiased, objective look at shark behaviour and shark encounters. no dramatization, villifying the sharks, fancy edits, or suspenseful narration. the overhead shots give a nice view of everything. so much of what we see and hear about sharks, even on "scientific" channels like natgeo, bbc, and discovery, are so exaggerated and dramatized that it creates such a false sense of paranoia and disdain for these animals. it's not to say they're not aggressive or attack ppl, or that we shouldn't exercise caution (they are predatory animals after all), but to see them like this you realize how the majority of the time they're really just exploring and looking for regular food.

Great vids. I do wish he would reveal the beaches that he's filming in these videos. Outside of his video covering the hammerhead bite at Deer Creek in Ventura, I've not heard him mention which beach in any of his videos. I'm so curious because I've spent my entire life in the water throughout Malibu, from Topanga to County Line, and while seeing dolphins and especially seals on almost every visit, I've never seen a shark or a shark fin. In his videos, there are sharks everywhere with fins breaching the surface. Where can this be in Malibu that I've NEVER seen it? I'm also intrigued by how well his camera sees through the surface to the sharks and rays, and even to the ocean floor. When you're sitting on your board in the lineup anywhere in Malibu, it's very rarely clear enough to see what's going on under the surface. I think he's most likely down in Laguna or even south of there. Much of his footage looks to me like it could be Deer Creek, but that's not Malibu and I've never seen a shark up there either.

I think your spot on with your observations of juvenile white sharks in the surf zone. They are able to rest as the incoming swells push oxygen rich water through their gills. Occasionally you see larger sharks exhibit the same behavior just slowly cruising around. It's also believed they like the warmer inshore water and these areas also provide an excellent nursery environment with plenty of food opportunities. Hopefully the sharks get accustomed to seeing humans and may be less likely to bite a swimmer or surfer when they become larger and start to hunt larger prey.

I love your videos! I am addicted to sharks and finding shark teeth on the beach. Even tho I'm addicted to these magnificent creatures, I always watch the water. I'm on the east coast of South Carolina where the water isn't clear like the California beaches. It's brown and hard to see things. I am not really a swimmer, I just go to look for shark teeth and walk down the beach enjoying the sound of the crashing waves. With you sharing your videos, it brings a whole new light to how they are. That we shouldn't fear them, but to respect them because the people are in the sharks home and people need to respect that and if something happens to happen, the person should be responsible for being in the sharks home. I watch a VERY AWESOME scuba diver on here and he always says that he takes full responsibility if he is attacked by a shark because he's in their home. The bottom line is we as people must respect the wildlife in the oceans because we are the visitors and the sharks don't understand that we are there to enjoy the water and pose no threat to the sharks. I would absolutely love to see a shark while I'm walking the beach! That would be the neatest thing ever!!

Great video, one that should be watched by everyone who enjoys the ocean! I've been surfing since 1964 (but slowing down a bit now!) ... and in the last minute or so of this video, you can see dolphin fins in the background - their fins are more curved and usually they "porpoise" above the surface. If the fin is a bit "sharper" in shape and just glides below the surface, it's a shark. Then again, for all the times I've ever seen sharks and dolphins, as mentioned on this video, it's the life below the surface that sees you and not the other way around!

  • @DeadSezSo

I get so anxious watching these videos, even though I know enough about sharks to know that most of the time, sharks don't even care about your or even other fish life around them. You just never know when they will feel you are encroaching on their territory or when they realize "you know what I'm kind of hungry, let me get a taste of you real quick". It's only a matter of time until a drone catches a shark attack or an attempted predation. But the drone footage should show people just how rare it is...and also that you should ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings.

idk if they already do this at shark beaches, but hiring a drone operator to patrol the beaches for sharks (like a lifeguard watching for drowning ppl) is pretty helpful. especially now that drones are so affordable and can offer such amazing, steady footage. when a shark gets close, or exhibits aggressive behaviour, the drone can descend to warn the swimmers, like it does here

@@Shadyman55 It was for sure. And what if it bit him by accident? I don't understand what it is with the current thinking that sharks are just misunderstood creatures and that therefore they are harmless, There are way too many videos of people free diving with large great whites and tigers and completely ignoring the potential danger they are in. This sends the very most wrong message. These animals can kill you on a whim or by mistake. Don't temp fate. Respect these animals like you should Grizzly bears, Leopard seals, Lions whatever. Great whites have been a protected species for 20 years - they can't be hunted or senselessly killed anymore. This is great news but it is a settled plight - it does not make large predatory sharks safe to be near. This Malibu Artist fella, clearly his heart is in the right place, but he's becoming cavalier with his videos and is pushing his legal exposure by diminishing a deadly threat to humans. Kumbaya isn't a defense in court.

@@MaverickDMD …excellent comment. I feel the same way. He is inevitable going to either capture on video a territorial attack or a predation.
These are apex predators for a reason, and they all have different temperaments and personalities. Also, when an animal is hungry, it’s going to eat. They do not reason like humans do. They will take the easy meal without hesitation.

Your channel is so interesting. Those rays, leopard sharks, and guitarfish are clearly afraid of the shark, knowing it is looking for food.

Your videos have taught me a lot! I’m a SoCal resident and I’m wondering if you’ve ever droned (new verb) over Sycamore Cove Beach?
It’s just north over the Malibu line.
The topography shows a steep drop not far off shore. With that do you think larger sharks would come closer to shore?
    Thanks.

I'm no shark expert but I'm very interested in them and if there's a steep drop I'd imagine sharks would come closer yes

There's tons of videos of great whites in Carpinteria and near the Malibu pier. I would assume that this would mean they would be inbetween too. I've personally had a great white surface behind me while I was on my kayak. The ground underwater (depth, sand/rocks, kelp) as well as the beach in general matched very similar to sycamore cove area.

Great information. This is why these majestic machines can’t be kept in aquariums. They swim around the globe from Sth Africa to South Australia to California. Amazing animals.

In low oxygen water zones that shark needs to maintain some forward movement in order to keep water moving through the gills but when they rest inside the surf zone the Water becomes oxygen rich by crashing waves requiring less forward movement if any.

Just amazing as usual! Such a great eye! I love your work, but won’t be swimming in the sea.
But enjoying your work all the more!
I spent my youth in Acapulco Bay. No concern for sharks as we didn’t believe we they were in the bay, only out at the Princess Hotel, where there were many attacks over the years.
I shudder now to think about it! Worst thing I encountered was a poisonous sea snake! But it was gone in a flash!
I applaud your bravery going in the water. You are a true talent and friend to the sharks 💗

This is also a relatively small white shark. Probably a juvenile that still feeds on fish and rays. The larger white sharks should be more of a concern.

It's funny. I frequent many of the breaks that I'm pretty sure you film and while I've had the odd encounter I don't generally look for the sharks because I know that I likely won't see them but I DO look up for a drone hovering over me LOL. I figure that may be my best tell that a shark is near me.

Surfing in SoCal my whole life there has been times i jump off my board pretty close to shore and land on something big. probably one of the sharks. Who knows but i have hit big things under water with no idea what it was. I have only seen two in the water while surfing once in 1986 and one in the late 90's I have seen them from shore breach out of the water. The best one I saw was about 100 yards outside of the south jetty from the Ventura harbor entrance. Probably about an 8-10 footer jump out of the water and make a huge splash. That was awesome to see.

You’ve shed so much light on sharks and their behavior that decades of research has failed to expose. We’ve been told they’re dumb and will strike anything that moves. Your footage has shown Whites are anything but dumb; they can very well tell the difference between their prey and the boards and swimmers here. They are truly amazing animals.

fascinating to watch this video and see how the shark just casually swims by the surfers yet in so many other instances they have attacked surfers or indeed killed them.

I have been curious about sharks since I was a teen, I've got several books but they are dated. I knew about facing the shark and letting it know you've seen them however, I didn't know they ride the waves for rests and oxygen so thank you. Everytime I watch the film jaws I pick holes in the behaviour wich is a shame - I'm a nightmare to watch it with
