- Want to know about a high-tech tool that can help you find minerals, gemstones and even gold? Today we are going to talk about prospecting with ultraviolet light. It can be a really great tool and just light up the gems and minerals you want to find, making them stand out and glow. While its not a perfect tool, in some cases it works great. Ultra-violet light can help you as a prospector. Ultraviolet light is an important and has a place in the tool box for many prospectors. Certain minerals will just light up and glow - often with bright colors - when illuminated with a UV lamp. That’s when the UV lamp can really be a super helpful tool to find valuable ores and minerals.
I did a 3 part series on how to identify minerals that will help you learn how to do it.
Part 1 can be found here:
• Mineral identification...
Part 2 can be found here:

Part 3 can be found here:

For those who want to learn more about Prospecting and finding gold check out my book, Fists full of Gold. It’s an encyclopedia of everything on the topic of prospecting. It’s available on Amazon. (Affiliate) You can find it at:

thank you for the opportunity to follow such an interesting material with the chance to learn so much. I have only one warning. ultraviolet light under any intensity is not something you can play with. the ultraviolet spectrum is divided into several subdomains, A,B,C and depending on the wavelength, they can become very dangerous for the skin and especially for the eyes, especially in the dark when the pupil is fully open. don't play with something like that. wear glasses with a UV filter or better, maybe as an idea you can use a digital camera that depending on the irradiated mineral or the optical filter used you can safely and more precisely detect crystals much faster during the day, it's just an idea. the technological possibilities are immense.
At the end of the video I talk about the safety risks. Care is required in use of UV.
🎉
Thank you mate I leaned more with you😊
Please definitely do a video on finding gems, that would be great!
OK, I will do that!
Used an ultraviolet light a few times, but no luck finding anything so far. Thanks for this video. 👍👍👍⛏️
It has to be a black light , uv only makes few things glow compared to black light! I found that out the hard way when I got a uv flashlight and it's just the type of uv plants use that's already in sunlight , the black light rly makes stuff glow!
Is there a simple experiment to know the type of lamp I have? Is it a black light or a UV light?@@GoldenBoy-et6of
black light is a slang name for Ultraviolet light.
My brother wanted to paint his room black and use black lights! Your videos are great. I really enjoy listening to you and the info you share!
Thanks - glad that never actually happened.
Very interesting. I’m glad you posted this. I wish you all the best. Chris.
Thanks, glad you found it helpful.
Be sure to also have a good pair of yellow/amber glasses/lenses, it helps to cut out the excess blues and you will find more
Good point.
I used a black light to determine quartz I've been collecting & in my town and joining va has several caves and lots of crystals and minerals. And love your channel something I learn something new everytime ❤❤❤❤
Glad you are enjoying the videos!
I have a rock that puts off heat and electricity and has rare elements and can mirror things it’s next to ! I think it’s a star!! It also glows orange, green, and pink . Thank you
That sounds very interesting.
@@ChrisRalph
Thank you for answering me. This rock has been sent to 3 labs and they all come back not knowing what it is, it’s. Very heavy, has gold in it! Also it changes color, it was placed next to a plastic skull and the rock took on the appearance in seconds I have pictures of it and it put my initials on the side when I used a laser pointer it’s still there! Yep it’s sounds crazy but it’s true!
One more thing, I crushed a little and put it in a gold bottle with water and the rocks dirt would go to the top and the particle would drop and repeat with a bunch of bubbles like 7up I also have a video of this unusual thing!
Thank you
Hide it. Tptb might try and steal it from you. See if it can take a command like "destroy that tree". If it does, maybe we need to talk.
Hey Chris, I want to learn more about gemstones.
Black lights, another useful tool for the box for sure!
I have a USMC combat tent that I got at surplus that blocks out the light in the sun.
For $100 (give or take) could be a good companion to a black light.
Or just wait until the sun sets.
Nice! Reminds me of way back when, as a student, I tried to demonstrate light reflection against light absorption using liquids and solids. Not sure I got it then or if anyone else did😊
Interesting!
Please do the gemstone identification I live in western North Carolina where you probably know is rich in gemstone. It would be greatly appreciated as is all your videos, thank you Chris.
OK, I will do it.
Thanks Professor! Another great video!
Glad you liked it!
Hey Chris, I just discovered your channel today and I'm so excited.I really like the way you put your videos together. The transition, the flow, the information! Im looking forward to watching all your videos and reading your book.
You're a beacon!
Welcome aboard! Glad you like them!
Thanks for your videos Chris your videos are very helpful and interesting and I like watching them all the time thanks😊
Glad you like them!
Thank you Chris! Very interesting.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks! I really appreciate your videos, etc. I met you a few years back in Sonora and bought your book. Great information and highly recommended.
Maybe we met somewhere else? I've never been to the town of Sonora on the Mother lode. Glad you like the book.
@@ChrisRalph Well, it certainly would have been somewhere else…I’m old 😃
I would love if you did a gem identification video and tools and filters used to identification. Love you brother
OK, I will do it.
Love the book! Bought it about 2 years ago 🤙🏻
Glad to hear that you are enjoying it!
Need to learn more about ultra violet lights to help me hunt for treasures.
Seems so expensive.
There is lots of information out there.
Love what you teach me
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Absolutely would love to see a gemstone identification video
OK, I will do that.
Thank you
You're welcome.
Of course, do a gem stone identifying video! Thank you.😊
I will do it.
It’s very interesting ❤
glad you enjoyed it.
Very Nice !!!!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it. Doing much prospecting now as the weather has improved?
@@ChrisRalph most every week !!!! Let me know when you want to join us !!!!
This is so cool by happenstance I just got a UV light, This I will try. I found last year a site in the back country where the rocks look different they are melted and tan some are Quartz with giant Red crystals running through them I'm trying to figure out what the red is? and can be found there , it's not a mine the closest one is an opal mine 15 miles away, but looks like an old river bed that was covered up with dirt and sediment, I only found it because of a forest fire burned the vegetation when the snow melts still a lot here I am going to take a closer look till than I will look at your other Videos Thanks for doing what you do.
Might be garnets!
@@GoldenBoy-et6of Possible, I never rule out anything till I know for certain
Sounds like its well worth exploring.
Yes please a gem idenfitifaction tutorial and maybe a field kit recommendation if possible ❤
OK - I will do that!
Gemstone ID video please! this video is cool and timely for me. I hit my rock sample collection with a black light several weeks ago just outta curiosity and a few samples lit up pretty good!
I will do the gem ID video.
Yes please do something on identifying gemstones
OK. Will do that.
Caliche fluorescence is pretty bright because of the phosphorus and in the desert will likely glow everywhere, often bright orange.
It's easy to mistake for something 'good' when in the dark, but also is very distracting.
Interesting.
So i found some purple fluorite and it didn't Flores and now it make sense thanks 👍
Please do a video of gem identification
Glad it was helpful.
thanks for this vid
No problem!
Professor Ralph.
Thank you for packing so much information in to this lecture.
Still need to get a UV light, but to find scorpions for SpiderPharm😊.
I remember you from Nuggetshooter forum, There you also packed so much info in to your posts.
Weaver hillbille- 12 mi NNW of Rich Hill😊
Rich Hill is a great place.
@@ChrisRalph To say that area has some history is an understatement.
THANKS SIR GOD'S BLESS YOU
Glad you enjoyed it.
Gems are what I really do.😊❤
I'll do some more gem related content.
thank you saw the demonstration at the end
not sure what you mean.
What UV length is best for this? Does Tyuyaminite glow? I think that's how it's spelled. Should I carry a dual wave black light?
Weakly fluorescent yellow-green in UV, depending on how much Uranium it contains.
Thanks for the black light video on finding gold and gems. I noticed you did not mention opals unless I missed it, as I like to watch Outback Opal Hunters on the Discovery channel, they use the UV light considerably in finding opal. I bought an LED UV flashlight and it works really good, I remember on Hotel Impossible he used one to shine in the bathrooms to locate things the maids missed while cleaning the toilet and isn't blood reflective as well? I used blacklights back in the 60's and 70's to make those posters shine real pretty but now for finding pretty rocks. lol Also I like prospecting for gold but I have to travel to do so as I live in the tristate area of OH/KY/WV and just about the only gold around here is glacial and along the banks of the Ohio River you can find little patches of black sand that has some flour gold in it. Any suggestions appreciated.
Some opals fluoresce, while others do not. I tested the UV on some opals I have and got nothing.
The conclusion of gold and the associates will appear sea lights color under black light? Or some other colors?
It may be some color....
I would like the gemstones id video!
It's coming.
Is it possible? to hunt for green garnet in season rivers with blackligh .after water gone .
Green garnet would be unlikely to fluoresce.
I'd like to buy the book yet have you ever thought about creating this book as an ebook in colour, would be perfect since we could have this book in our pocket inside our cellphone
Yes, I have thought of such many times and it does not work. First, e-books are designed to have a very minimum of illustrations. They are great for novels and such. Books with lots and lots of illustrations are not done as e-books. It has to do with the scaling of print so that an e-book can be for any device - on a cell phone, the illustrations would be the size of a postage stamp. My book has hundreds of illustrations. Second, many of the illustrations are diagrams or old photos originally shot in B&W. I can't travel back in time to re-make them in color.
Years ago in Palm Springs there was a rock shop with a room full of minerals that lit up when you turned on the ultra-violet light. Which light did you buy from Amazon?
Not sure they sell the same one I bought on Amazon still. There are a number of them out there.
I found a rock that contains a lot of iron pyrite and a bluish silver color material and in the middle of it is a white strip that I thought was just Quartz, well just for the heck of it I had a UV light and shined it on the white area of the Rock and to my amazement it turned pink! I'm not sure what this white section is but I don't believe it is quartz, any ideas of what this may be?
I have no idea - a lot more info is needed to ID a mineral. Lots of minerals can possibly fluoresce a pinkish color.
Can I buy this book online as a PDF for the internet environment, because if there is a PDF, I will translate this book into my own language. Also, are there explanations about UV light and gold minerals in this book?
No, I do not sell it as a PDF. There is not much about UV light in the book. There is information on gold minerals.
I do have a 345 that is smaller than that light you have and its LED. but it was $80.
OK.
Yes, do the gem video.
OK, I will do that!
Wish you would know more about Australian geology.can you tell me more information if ya no? Bob .👍.p.s.good job by the way🤧
There is good gold in WA, Vic, NSW and other states as well.
Yes it does work ha ha,
high from Australia I check my diamonds with a diamond tester then a uv light but not all diamonds glow so use conductivity test then a uv light folks
Most diamonds do not fluoresce - only a few.
Good on you. There is NO substitute for hiring the expert living in the mining district, not just some online book reader. True life success and performance is observable. If you want Virgin Valley Opals...Swordfish Mining is what I go by.
Thanks - I've not been out to the virgin valley opal fields for about 15 years.
@@ChrisRalph Our opals dont glow like the Australian ones do, but the surface woods are nice yellow & orange.
I have no magic to determine from far away what your best course of action is. There are too many possibilities for me to even guess.
@@ChrisRalph هل كتابك يمكن أن يساعدني في فهما اكثر ويرشدني الى الطريق الصحيح للتعامعل معها بشكل جيد؟

What happened to my comment ?
Not sure. I didn't do anything with it. Sometimes TH-cam does weird stuff. I did one the other day where I replied to a few comments but afterwards my replies would not show. I commented a second time and still they still did not show. The next day both reply comments appeared. I recently got a comment about gold where the guy called me Jeff. Pretty sure he thought his comment was being made on a Jeff Williams video.
Chris your way too long winded.
I do get comments like yours, but I get way, way more comments thanking me for going into all the details.
Waaaaaaa. Go back to watching shorts.
Thank you
You're welcome, glad it was helpful.
