  • Update on the '57 Ford Fairlane 500.
    Got the Fordomatic transmission transmissioning again. The linkage and kickdown has been modified and out of adjustment so the car was shifting too quickly and wouldn't downshift when the pedal was depressed.
    The bad boy racing wheel was replaced with the original. I also installed new tires as the ones on the car were very old, mismatched, too small and dry rotted. I painted the fender skirts brown to match the car and show how they work.

    57 Fairlanes and 57 BelAires do not need fender skirts. The wheel wells have a beautifully designed flair to them as well as very nice wheel discs.

      But they still look cool with fender skirts for a lower look which was popular back then. My father even had them on our 55' Olds Rocket 88 when I was a kid.

    I am Italian and I have always seen these cars in American films and TV series. I love them, it's a shame that car manufacturers have stopped building these works of art. I also love the Coronet you reviewed, fabulous

    I usually like skirts on the old classics, but not so much on the four door 57 Ford. It may be the dark color of the car plus the black wall tires, but I like this car better without them. Although I'm not a Ford guy, I still think it's a cool car.

    It has always been my opinion that the 1957 Ford, the longer wheelbase Fairlane series, is one of the most stylish cars in the world. My first two cars were both cars like yours except that they were hardtops. I loved those cars. One was a 292 2V, the other was the 312 4V. The dual exhaust and 4V carb and manifold in the trunk make me think that the original engine in the car was a 312. Neither of my cars were "slugs." I think you solved the problem with the tranny adjustment. I love how easily it starts with the Pertronix and electric fuel pump. I would definitely convert to electric wipers, I remember driving in the rain and them freezing up in a "salute" position with the slightest acceleration or approaching a hill.
    I put gas shocks, HD springs in them and I had Goodyear series 70 'glas tires on them and I loved the way they rode and handled. The '57 Fords definitely did not need whitewalls or skirts to look good
    Your door panels are original but the seat covers and headliner are not. I'm 6'2" and never had a head room problem in them. Your problem could be a combination of the rain shields on the windows, a sagging headliner, drooping padded sun visors and something they did to the seats when they recovered them.
    Years later when my '57s were long gone I bought a'59 Ford Custom 300 4 door sedan and I was very surprised that it drove nowhere near as nice as my '57s, it rode more like a small truck. Then I remembered back when I was young I had a friend who had a '59 Ford Galaxie and sometimes he would ask me to run errands with it and I was always surprised that it did not ride as nice as my '57.

    The Fordamatic automatic transmission on V8 cars always starts in 2 nd gear which is normal.
    However if the automatic transmission kick down linkage is adjusted correctly and you push the accelerator pedal to the floor it will downshift into low and if you push the accelerator pedal to the floor below ⬇️ around 20 mph it will downshift into low gear and provide good acceleration.
    I have forgotten the automatic up shift speed however it will go into second gear automatically and if the engine is turned properly it does very well.
    The up shift from second to high or third gear under full throttle will occur between 60 and 70 miles per hour.
    You can find the proper downshift linkage settings by adjusting the kick down linkage to its farthest point of travel when the carburetor is at its wide open position and that should give you the correct performance of the Fordamatic automatic transmission.
    The 1958 Fairlane 500s that came with the 332 interceptor engine which was the first Ford FE series engine came with if ordered with the cruiseamatic automatic transmission if ordered with the automatic transmission option.
    This automatic transmission did start off in low or 1st gear and shift to 2nd and 3rd automatically.
    I believe the 1st to 2nd upshift under full throttle occurred at around 40 mph and the 3rd gear upshift was at around 70 mph.
    In 1959 the 352 interceptor was was offered with the cruiseamatic automatic transmission also.
    However the models with the 272 and 292 Y-Block V8s still had the Fordamatic automatic transmissions.
    However the 6 cylinder engines came with the Fordamatic automatic transmissions only the 6 cylinder version did not have the kick down to a low or first gear as it was a two speed automatic transmission only and under full throttle it would kick down to 2nd gear up to around 65 mph as the six cylinder engines did not rev as high as the V8 engines did.
    Chevrolets I think stuck with the two speed power glide automatic transmissions until around 1960.

    Original steering wheel is a major improvement. That bumper is definitely bent up but I don't think gas nozzles at the time were as bulbous as they are now.

    Did you notice that Ford-o-matic starts out in second and shifts back down to first? They were designed that way and that's probably what the previous owner(who still wasn't a mechanic) was trying to circumvent. It wasn't shifting 1-2-3, it was starting in 2nd, staying there, then shifting to 3rd. You can push-start those because the pump in the trans is at the rear. Making a hood ornament insert from metal tape and magic marker had to be an old man "I fixed it" move. At the least, your left headlamp is 1974 or older, they changed the fluting in 1975.

    • @ObsoleteAutomotive
      @ObsoleteAutomotive  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Putting the pedal to the floor did not downshift or start off in 1st in that case. The kickdown rod was doing absolutely nothing with the bolt put into the linkage. In no way would it keep it in 1st. It just shifted into 3rd as quick as it could and was a slug
      When you’d shift into low the transmission would “think” it’s at low speed and shift into 1st no matter the speed! Was a surprise at 55mph! The only way to get any take off was to put the car in low and hold in 1st and then shift into drive where it would shift into 2nd then quickly go into 3rd.
      But it’s all been rectified now. This is my first Ford so it’s all new to me!

    • @TylersNeighborhoodGarage
      @TylersNeighborhoodGarage 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@ObsoleteAutomotive Right on. They kept that transmission in production a while longer but did introduce the MX/FX in '58 that did fully shift 1-2-3. Early "automatic" transmissions like the Packard Ultramatic and the Dynaflow were revised several times to make them work better. The engineers were hung up on the idea of fluid drive and fluid couplings instead of stepped gear changes. As we all know the Torqueflite, Cruise-o-matic and the Hydramatic were the units that proved to be winners.

      Without having looked it seemed to come from the rear end. It could be several things. I had a car that made a noise like this once and it was the flange coming off the pinion shaft due to a loose nut!

    Regarding the left side keys, the story claims a Ford engineer was driving an old Ford and his kid shut the ignition off while they he was fooling around. Thinking this could be a safety issue he movement to place the ignition on the left. But Chrysler had left hand key start in 1949 so I really do not know the real reason for left side startrs. Maybe the fact you could start the standing outside had something to do with it. I enjoy your channel.

    • @ObsoleteAutomotive
      @ObsoleteAutomotive  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Chrysler went back to left side ignition switches for one year in 1969 as well. Plymouth Fury, Dodge Polara and Chrysler models were all left side ignition. 1970 was the implementation of the column switch so my guess is that it was a one year deal that required minimal tooling changes to the dashboard for 1970 when dash mounted switches were phased out.

    Absolutely keep the fender skirts it makes the ford sleeker like a road floating look
    Your Fairlane has been through alot with it being a earlier model (probably around December of 1956 or a little later) its a rare bird that its survived this long without catastrophic damage to anything

    When you mounted your own wheels how did your balance them? Between that and your wheel bearings would make a huge difference

    • @ObsoleteAutomotive
      @ObsoleteAutomotive  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      In many instances balancing has little effect especially with new tires these days. There are no vibrations just noise. Coming from the rear so could be the rear end or axle bearings.
