  • TDL- MEGA ST Fan Repair And Audio Out
    Its time to sort the MEGA ST out. How about a gentle little airflow solution to get the ball rolling?

    Fans have a slight curve on the blades, sort of like a scoop. If you think of the blades as spoons you can tell which way is up. As for blowing out the back to get rid of dust it's still going to get in through grilles and any bit of space at all. In an ideal world you want to control the entry and exit of air, and filter the entry. If you also manage to get positive pressure - in other words you have more fans going in than out, then you should have virtually no dust inside because all the air that enters the case will go through a filter. It's more of a thing for modern PCs though.

    You should have straightened out the metal frame before installing the 20 mm fan. Bolts, washers, and lock nuts were used to mount the fan. Also, the fan power wires are too close to the metal frame. Those two connectors in front of the power supply, one was used for the disk drive, the other was used to power the fan, if one was installed. Yes, you can upgrade the later Mega2 ST computers to 4 megabytes. But, that is mainly to boost one's ego. Most Atari ST software runs great on 512K or 1 MB of ram. The only reasons to upgrade to 4 megs of ram is if you are doing Macintosh emulation, desktop publishing, or running productivity software that requires 2 to 4 megs.

    Starts looking the part! Are you going to fit an internal Satan?

      I'm running an external Satan. I don't fancy opening the case just to change the SD card 😁

    Cool mod as always.
    Are you go to remake a "Tweety board" so you can have stereo audio?

    I think that the fan would be more useful if it blew to the inside. Especially since the case has vents just above the place, where the fas is mounted.

      I did a few experiments and it's quite interesting, basically any airflow is enough to dissipate the heat so I think you could try pointing it either way. It's funny how and almost imperceivable breeze is enough to keep these components cool absolutely unlike modern day computing! 😂

      They simply don't get that hot. So anything can keep them reasonably cold.

    Looked like you connected the fan to 5V and not 12V? Was that intentional?

      I didn't want it sounding like a vacuum cleaner 😂
      It would be neat to fit an adjustable

    I thought we normally called them phono not RCA connectors on this side of the pond.

    • @backofficeshow
      @backofficeshow  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah phono is more standard a term for sure

      But this video is quite old! Don't worry, it's getting yanked! I have a poorly Ti99 that's consumed the last few weeks, but I'll be back on ST soon don't worry.

    I thought RCA jacks were illegal over there?
