The French Knight Geoffroi de Charny who fought in the Hundred Years Wars, (he actually fell at Poitiers carrying the Oriflamme) He wrote in one of his treatises about having to sleep many a night on the ground, sleep deprived due to discomfort, mind thinking about the horrors he had witnessed and anxiety about enemy location. Most likely also suffering from PTSD.

Yup it would be mostly on the ground.. if lucky you may have a dry blanket... sailors in this era slept on deck in leather sacks during storms so I don't see why anyone on land would be worse off outside... wouldn't want to waste resources transporting tents for anyone but the top nobs in the army..

yes, many of the Allied Forces who landed at Kalamita in the Crimea had to sleep on the beach on the first night-under a heavy downpour-a couple of days later they had to march under a hot sun, with little water. I count my blessings.

It is indeed in the order of things to feel upset at witnessing what soldiers witness in wartime, in action.
But it most surely isn't in the order of things for a sane mind to feel this upset. It is a disorder for the mind's health, I'd say.

Another fabulous video. Candles were made out of Tallow,( any rendered down animal fat home-made and stunk!!) But for every day use, and cheap as chips, whereas beeswax candles were more labour intensive and very expensive so only used if high ranking guests were visiting. Their days started very early, sunrise, so a big meal, maybe 4/5/6 or even 7 courses were eaten depending on the day and rank of any guests! Eaten at 12pm midday. Bedtime was sundown so in winter as early as 5pm. I love Medieval history! If only I could step back in time! Love from chez in Lliria Valencia Spain xx

Watching videos like this, and getting so much good background information makes the history all feel so much more real. I believe that even though we take what we are taught as fact, until we can see the places and everyday artifacts in a realistic setting, and talk about them, it doesn’t fully register in the mind as real. Now having spent some time doing just that, it is all so much more relatable, and feels very real. It makes the mental image I have of history so much more vivid. Thank you!

I'd love to see how much space it would take up all packed away, I wonder did a high ranking soldier have an allocation of pack animals/wagons to carry all this marvellous stuff?

Yes, he owned it. Before you own the tent you have to own the wagon, and there would have been a team of men to set up the tentage 👍🏻

Hello Kevin. I have been quite ill of recent and your channel provides some much needed relief while recupriating. You have replaced "Time Team" as a "go-to" fave. Many thanks from Maryland, USA.......Carl

This is awesome. Is there one of these for how a footsoldier or bowman lived on campaign?
